Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: The Cutting Room Floor (The Movies Kitchen Sink): Moderator Archives: Luigi Novi (Oct 2006 - )

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 1:44 am:

MODERATOR NOTES:

Okay, I've just finished some cleaning up, mostly in the Superheroes boards.

-The boards in that genre have been placed in alphabetical order. I've also alphabetized the War movies.

-There were two or more concurrent boards for Hulk, Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2 and X-Men 3. I merged them.

-All the Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, and Superman boards were placed into subtopics for those characters. In the case of the first two, I created subtopics for them. In the case of the latter two, there were already subtopics for them, but there were still Batman and Superman movies lying around in the main Superheroes genre list. I put them together.

-I deleted the boards for Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Nemesis, and Star Wars EPISODE III, which were created either because their creator didn't know about or couldn't find the main topic boards for them (which in one case was me). I was going to dump them so that Butch and the SW moderator could move them into those boards, but I then saw that each one only had about 4-6 posts, anyway, and not much conversations on them.

-I brought all the different Genre boards and placed them here on the main page, giving surfers one less step to get to it, since I figured there was not much already here to begin with. Speaking of which....

-I closed down the Bug the Moderator board, and put it in the Movies Kitchen Sink, figuring that any suggestions or complaints can be directed to me here, much as is the case with my other boards.

-Given the immensity of the movies in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section, and the difficulty of alphabetizing them, I'm thinking of creating subtopics alphabetized by letter for that Genre. Is that okay with everyone?

By dotter31 on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 7:10 am:

Luigi, could you please delete The Day After link from the James Bond section? I'm not sure why there is a link to it there.(according to The Day After board its been there awhile too)

Also, the Die Another Day board has its own subtopic, and is not in the James Bond section.

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 12:17 pm:

Okay, I put Die Another Day in the Bond section, and alphabetized those movies, but I'm not sure how to get rid of a link that doesn't even show up in the Administration area (I didn't even know you could do that in the first place). I emailed Mark Morgan to ask him how to do that.

By dotter31 on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 8:40 pm:

Bug in the software, maybe?

Thanks for your efforts.

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 9:59 pm:

Any time.

NOTE: I just alphabetized the Action/Adventure and Western movies.

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 10:43 pm:

-Just alphabetized the Thriller/Horror section, and merged the two boards that existed for The Sum of All Fears.

-Since the Short Films subtopic consisted of one board for Short Film Sites, with two posts on it, I moved to the Movies Kitchen Sink, and deleted the Main Short Films subtopic from the Genre list.

-Alphabetized the Musicals list.

-And Documentaries.

-I dismantled the Cult Classics and B-Movies board, placing the movies on that list into Comedy, Action, Thriller/Horror, Musical, etc.

-I saw that the only two movies under Mystery were Clue and Murder on Flight 052. The latter was a TV movie, so I placed it under TV movies. The former was more a comedy than a mystery, and rather than leave just one movie in a subtopic, I put it under Comedies and deleted the Mystery genre.

-Alphabetized the TV Movies & Miniseries list.

By Avandelay (Avandelay) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 1:30 am:

Nice work Luigi.

Maybe open a second Superman Returns board, especially as the DVD is out in the next month.

Also, I can't post here without being logged in, it says I'm banned, what's going on?

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 2:56 am:

??? Where are you posting from? Do you know your IP number?

Also, if you log in, is it a problem?

(And thanks.)

NOTE: Just finishing alphabetizing the Comedy Section, and merged the Cannonball Run, Smokey and the Bandit and Rocky Horror Picture Show boards, which each had two concurrent boards.

I think that leaves just Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Drama, and the Sink.

By KAM on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 3:28 am:

Apparently there is a glitch involving the James Bond board. I recall a discussion one, or two, mods back saying even Phil couldn't access it or something like that.

My suggestion would be to create a Table of Contents so people could check to see if a movie has a thread & where.

For example

15 Minutes - Action/Adventure

Airplane! - Comedy

Angel Eyes - Action/Adventure

Animal House see National Lampoon's Animal House - Comedy

As Good As It Gets - Comedy

Bad Company - Action/Adventure

National Lampoon's Animal House - Comedy

Star Trek The Motion Picture - can be found in the ClassicTrek topic

Star Wars - can be found in the Star Wars topic

Of course if the Kitchen Sink is any example, no one will actually use it, but still it's a nice idea as some films could theoretically go under several genres & it gets boring looking through several folders trying to see if a film's there.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 8:59 am:

If I understand your suggestion correctly, I'd have to create a list of every single movie not only in the entire Movies board, but on the entire site in order to create that Table, and constantly update it every time someone creates a new one. No thanks. :) We already have a method to see if a movie has a thread: The Keyword Search tool.

By Anonymous on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 9:20 am:

I'd just regroup all the movies into better categories, star trek ones in a star trek sub cat which is inside the sub cat of sci fi, and marvel sub cat inside the super heros one...

By KAM on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 9:32 am:

It could be done originally with simple copy & paste to get all the names. The formatting would take the longest amount of time, but even that could be reduced with C&P. After that it would be a simple addition of one, or a couple, of titles as boards are added.

As for movies on other boards, how many are there? 6 on ClassicTrek, 4 on NextGen, 6 on Star Wars & 1 on Stargate, okay there might a few under Political Musings & Religious Musings, so just over 20?

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 11:06 am:

But again, wouldn't that table be one more thing to update every time a new movie is added? Why not just use the Keyword Search?

By Polls Voice on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 11:56 am:

Fantastic 4 still needs to have its sequal combined with a sub cat

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 1:13 pm:

Where is this? Where is the subcat?

Art, I added the second Superman Returns board.

By JD (Jdominguez) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 1:57 pm:

Wow, this place is already different. Knocked out the walls, more airy. Nice job, Luigi. You will let Hitchcock the Movie Goldfish stay, won't you? He's lived here all his life and it'll be jarring to take him elsewhere. :-D

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 5:20 pm:

I've already bought a new sea castle for his tank, Jake. :)

And thank you.

Art and Influx: I looked through a random sampling of some of your Movie posts in order to glean some of the IP numbers you guys use, and compared them to those that I had blocked to see if they shared similarities. It turns out that the most common IP used by Influx shares the same first three digits as KGood/Biggy/Dr James A, and the first two or three digits of four the IPs used by Art Vandelay are shared by IPs used by the Aug/Sept 2006 Spambot. Up until now, I've been content to simply put an asterik to the right of the first two or three digits of a number used by a blocked user when configuring the IP Access Manager, since that blocks any IPS that begins with those first digits. Since this had the effect of blocking you two as well, I've fined tuned it, placing the asterik to the right of the second decimal point of the numbers used by blocked users, which should allow you to continue posting. I've done this not only for Movies, but naturally, for PM, LM, and Voyager as well.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. If you experience any further problems, do not hesitate to contact me right here, in the Sink, or at nightscreamnovi1972@yahoo.com. :)

By Josh M on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 6:48 pm:

Fantastic Four, like Hulk, are only two movies though.

BTW, Luigi, I like your idea to organize the sci-fi/fantasy board into alphabetized subtopics.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 7:00 pm:

Thanks.

And thanks for clarifying, Polls. As Josh surmised, I don't think subtopic categorizing is necessary for movies with less than three sequels/prequels. Subjective, maybe, but I think it's workable.

(And geez, did you have to paste the entire Superhero movie list??? :))

By Art Vandelay on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 - 1:38 am:

That's sorted it, I can post now, thanks.

By Polls Voice on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 - 8:03 am:

(And geez, did you have to paste the entire Superhero movie list??? )

Well thanks to your cleaning up, what I posted was less than half the size it used to be.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 - 8:04 am:

Any time.

NOTE: I just split the Family/Animated into two subtopics: Animation and Family/Children.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 - 2:53 pm:

NOTE: I finished organizing the Drama movies. In the process, I noticed several movies that fit more appropriately into other genres, like Action/Adventure, Thriller/Horror, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, etc. I also had to merge a couple of movies with redundant boards, like Insomnia, K-19: The Widowmaker, and (I think), Memento. I believe this just leaves Sci-Fi/Fantasy and the Sink for me to organize, and then it's on to Voyager, whose only major required cleanup is its Sink. I'm working tonight, so be patient. :)

Genre Categories: I know that figuring out the genre of a film is hard, because so many films can easily be said to fit into more than one genre, but I think a fairly reasonable system is this: Action or adventure films or go into that category, but if they have any sci-fi or fantasy element in them, they go into Sci-Fi/Fantasy. It's a parameter that I think makes sense, though I don't know if that's what you guys have in mind when creating or looking for a board. Similarly, such films that rely on an emphasis on suspense or dark atmosphere go into Thriller/Horror. This includes such slasher films like say, the Nightmare on Elm Street films, even though they have a fantasy element to them. Does this make sense to everyone? Is it confusing? Do you have a better, more consistent system that you can suggest? If it's too confusing, would making a habit of using the Keyword Search tool, if you don't already do so, make finding boards easier? Please let me know your feelings on all these questions. :)

Interestingly, I discovered a new tool last night that I hadn't know about: The "Reorder Sutopics" button that allows a mod to place subtopics in alphabetical order with the push a button, which almost made me apply a shard of glass to my throat in light of all the alphabetization that I had done up until to that point manually. One downside of this is that the program places titles beginning with the word "The" under "T", instead of the excepting that word and regarding the first letter of the next word as the true "beginning" of the title. Far be it from me to disregard the program's designers, but in every other reference source I've ever read, articles like "A" and "The" were always excepted, and lookign at these lists, the sections with movies beginning with "The" and "A" didn't really look right to me, so I organized them according to the second word. Maybe this is subjective, but I'd like to know what you guys think. When scrolling down to look for a title, do you assume the first letter is the word after "the"? Or do you just use the Keyword Search function to look for a title? (Given the number of redundant boards, I'm guessing the answer to that second question is "no", and I admit that I didn't always use that tool myself, given that I had created one or two redundant boards myself.) Again, let me know. :)

And just so you guys know, the other exception I make to alphabetization is movies series whose titles are not distinguished by a number, like say, the Harry Potter series. I think seeing the list is chronological order, instead of alphabetical order (which would put Sorceror's Stone at the bottom of the list, for example), may satisfy the eye and the visitor's natural search instincts a little better. It's a minor thing, I think, but again, let me know.

By Polls Voice on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 - 4:49 pm:

This isn't meant to be rude, but as us lowly peons do not have access to the moderator admin controls, your admin discoveries will never gain that much enthusiasm from the rest of us. Next time, present us with some nice colorful illustrations.

Luigi Novi: Great. Four years of art school, and I'm getting requests to draw pictures of my own suicide. :)

By Art Vandelay on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 - 2:06 am:

I always thought it would be great if you could have more than one link to a board. e.g. Stargate the Movie would be under SciFi here and also under the Stargate board and both would link to the same board. The same idea would apply to say, as mentioned above, Nightmare on Elm Street where you would have a link to the same board from both the Thriller\Horror and Fantasy (say) genre boards.
Don't know if it's possible with the software we use other than using a regular hyperlink.

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 - 2:09 am:

Well, nothing's stopping the Stargate moderator from doing this. As for Nightmare, isn't it fairly obvious from looking at the genre list that that movie would be under "Horror"? A more fitting example of using the cross-board links would be what I did with the proposed film Superman vs. Batman, placing it in Superman movies, and a link to it in Batman movies, since both characters are in that film's title, and both have their own subcat boards. Another example is linking works in the same franchise or adaptations of a source material, as when I cross-linked the 1984 feature and 2000 TV miniseries versions of Dune, which are in different subtopics.

By Art Vandelay on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 - 5:03 am:

It is obvious, I was just using it as an example (albeit a bad one :0) ).

Your "Superman vs. Batman" link is exactly what I meant.

By Dustin Westfall on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 - 7:20 pm:

Congrats on your new role, Luigi.

Since you are in the process of reoganizing anyway, it might be a good idea to put the James Bond films in chronological/production order, similar to the Harry Potter and Indiana Jones sections.

Also, should we go through you before we start a new thread, so that it can be sorted properly, or will you take care of that after the fact? I was wanting to start a board for "The Prestige," since we don't have one, but I didn't want to mess up the work you've already done.

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 - 9:37 pm:

Thanks, Dustin. It's good to hear from you again.

I'm not as familiar with the Bond films before my time as those in it, so I'll consult IMDB to do that. :)

As far as new boards, you can just use the Create a New Conversation button. The only areas on which it was not active as of this writing were Drama and Family/Children, so I activated it on those boards. I'm currently experiencing some problems cleaning up Sci-Fi Fantasy, but even so, I don't think having a new one pop will matter, since I'll just alphabetize the new additions just the same. Thanks for your courtesy. :)

As for The Prestige, I just created it in Thrillers.

ANOTHER NOTE: I'm beginning to understand more clearly what Art meant by the crosslinks; I was having a deuce of a time figuring out whether to put some movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Cat in the Hat in Sci-Fi/Fantasy or Family/Children, so I'll just stick 'em in one, and provide links to them in another.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 2:41 am:

NOTE: Okay, I think I'm done cleaning up the Sci-Fi/Fantasy boards, though there was a major mishap that left some permanent damage to twenty of the boards in that genre. It's important that all interested users know about it, so you might want to read the explanation of it here.

I've also put the James Bond films in chronological order, as per Dustin's suggestion.

I also changed the name of the Sink. Whaddaya think? Like it? Hate it? Anyone want me to change it back?

I think the only thing left to organize is the Sink, and then it's on to Voyager.

By dotter31 on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 6:49 am:

I like the new name of the sink.

And thanks again for your efforts.

By Polls Voice on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 8:37 am:

I think "Cutting Room Floor" sounds better for the sink. Projection Booth sounds like something more fitting of a board to discuss trailers or previews or upcoming stuff.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 9:48 am:

Well, the pattern I've seen for naming sinks is to use any important, central location associated with the Topic in question, often where people congregate (Central Perk), or a place "removed" from the topic that allows its inhabitants to act like flies on the wall (The Fortress of Solitude, Comics' Gutter, etc.), so "Screening Room" or "Projection Booth" seem appropriate, as does "Cutting Room Floor".

How about we put it to a vote?

1. The Projection Booth
2. The Screening Room
3. The Cutting Room Floor
4. Rick's Cafe Americain

If in addition to your vote, you'd like to suggest your own name:
5. Other

(Please indicate which of the other four you'd prefer though, if it comes down to one of those.)

What say you, Movie board users?

By Art Vandelay on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 12:42 am:

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 1:43 am:

Polls/Torque can only vote once. And shouldn't I have at least one vote? It's the numbers that are ultimately deciding. Even though I came up with 1., I later thought of 2., which I think sounds like a better name.

Also, I think in retrospect that having an "Other" listing was not a very good idea, since each person who takes advantage of that option will probably be the one voter for the name that they come up with. (Sure, a subsequent voter could very well say that they like a voter's "Other" suggestion too, but I don't know if that's likely).

Benn and John, could you tell me which of the previous four you'd prefer if your own suggestions don't get more votes? Thanks. :)

By KAM on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 4:33 am:

The first three are very close, but 2 (barely) edges out 1 & 3 seems slightly more cumbersome than the other two. 4 is just "meh". Then again "Other" would be a unique name for a Sink.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 - 1:22 am:

TWO IMPORTANT NOTES (BOTH ABOUT THE SINK):

1. First, the title. It seems that #3 and #4 have tied for the new Movies Sink title, and none of the other Nitcentralians I emailed seem to be showing up to chime in, so to break the tie, I'm going to regard 3 and 4 as the final two finalists, and ask the three people who voted for #1 and #2—Keith Alan Morgan, Aaron Dotter and John A. Lang—to vote for one of them. (I myself also voted for #2, but I'm going to abstain for reasons of objectivity, and also because three, being an odd number, will ensure that either #3 or #4 will win.) I’ve emailed Keith and John already, so Aaron, please take note. :)

2. I finally finished cleaning up and organizing the Sink, and would like to give you a rundown of the new organizational structure. Hopefully when you look through it, the ten subtopics will be fairly self-explanatory and user-friendly:

Moderator Archives
Instead of a Bug the Moderator board, what I’m going to do is let people communicate with me on the Movies Main board, just as on PM, and after those conversations die down, move them to the Archives. Right now there are two subtopics in the Archives: One of posts made during Jake’s tenure as Moderator, and one made during mine. I've also created this set-up in PM as well.

People in Film
This is to talk about actors, filmmakers, etc. Not only is this for discussing specific people (Kevin Bacon, Denzel Washington, Roman Polanski), but also discussions pertaining to people in general (“Are Actors Overpaid?” “Options Clauses in Actor Contracts” “Directors who Work with the Same Actors”). Please do not start a board here to say, “Hey, did you hear this actor will be in this upcoming movie?” That sort of post belongs on the board for that movie, because it’s specific to one movie. The Create a New Conversation button is active on all the Genre boards now, so if there is no such board, create one.

Movie Lists and Awards
Best Movies, Funniest Movies, Movies We’re Not Looking Forward To, Best Credits Sequence, Tough Gals in Movies, AFI’s Best Films, Premiere Magazine’s Best Films, the Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards, etc. You get the picture.

Sequels, Remakes & Adaptations
These boards are to discuss sequels, remakes, and adaptations as a subject. As with People in Film, please do not start a board here to say, “Hey, they’re making a live-action version of Akira!” Instead, start a board for that movie. Boards here are for discussing things like “These are sequels I like, and these are ones I hate”, or “These are my top 5 cartoon adaptations”, or “What aspects of a novel do you guys think should always be retained in a movie adaptation, and which should be changed?” These are boards to discuss such movies as a group.

Movie Websites
Pretty self-explanatory.

DVD & Easter Egg Topics
Also pretty self-explanatory. These are mostly DVD topics, but there is also a topic for Movie Easter Eggs, since it’s similar in theme. Incidentally, the topic “Widescreen or Pan-N-Scan Format?” is linked to in the Roundtable Discussions area (see below).

Recurring Nits, Patterns, Clichés, & Trivia
These boards are for recurring trends, patterns and other miscellaneous quirks that we notice in films, such as recurring nits, homages, rip-offs, movie "rules", clichés, appearances by the number 47, cap codes, trailers, the way Halloween is referenced in Scream and vice versa, etc.

Roundtable Discussions
This is where we discuss our opinions of various aspects of the movie industry, such as the quality of movie soundtracks, the definition of science fiction vs. fantasy, the overall health of the industry, whether nudity in certain films is necessary to the plot or just gratuitous, the future of digital filmmaking, the merits of various MPAA ratings, etc.

Games
Boards in which Nitcentralians’ partcipation is purely for fun, such as guessing movie quotes, scrambling or combining movie titles, etc.

Help Me Remember This Movie
This is one single board that just didn’t seem to fit into any other category.

Please understand that in regards to areas like People in Film or Sequels, Remakes & Adaptations, when I set certain parameters for the creation of boards there, and say don't create this type of board there, I’m not criticizing or pointing the finger, because in cleaning the boards, I found that I myself made posts or created boards that I ended up moving or merging with other boards too. Becoming a moderator has lent insight into the need to keep boards organized that I might not have appreciated as much solely as a user. (Moderator, organize thyself.) Please take the time to look through the Sink, and see how everything is organized. And if you have any problems with this set-up, or have any polite criticisms or suggestions for improvement, do not hesitate to voice them. :)

By dotter31 on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 - 6:40 am:

I vote 3 as well.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, November 01, 2006 - 12:37 am:

Then it's settled. That's the two needed for a majority, so Keith doesn't have to vote. The new Title is The Cutting Room Floor. (I changed it in the early afternoon of Tuesday, but couldn't post here to make the announcement.) Thanks to everyone for your participation. :)

MODERATOR ANNOUNCEMENT:
Unfortunately, it looks like the move to the new server has pretty much rendered the urls of the 20 boards in the Archived Sci-Fi/Fantasy boards in the Sink unusable, since clicking on them leads to a Forbidden page. So that's that. I apologize, but it looks like we may have permanently lost those boards, which include the Back to the Future movies, Blade Runner, Contact, etc. So if anyone wishes to comment on those movies, they'll have to recreate those boards. I apologize to all users whose participation on those discussions have been lost. :-(

At least it appears that my chores stemming from the server move are now complete. Enjoy. :-)

Regarding Back to the Future...

It's like they've been erased...

Erased from time?

sorry, I think I messed up the quote from Marty when he's showing the doc the pic of his family

Erased... from existence!

By Polls Voice on Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 11:33 am:

Luigi, feel free to delete this new discussion if there's another spot for these sorts of posts.

Anyway...

The link to "World Trade Center" in the Biographical/Historical/Religious category is broken. I suspect that's because the movie is also listed here: http://nitcentral.philfarrand.com/cgi-bin/discus/board-auth.cgi?lm=1153791559&file=/8/26761.html

Also, does this mean anything?
http://nitcentral.philfarrand.com/cgi-bin/discus/board-auth.cgi?lm=0&file=/8/27257.html

It appears to be devoid of any useful information...

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 10:19 pm:

Thanks, Polls. In the future, just direct questions and suggestions to me here on this Main board. :-)

By PV on Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 10:50 pm:

I didn't realize it was still opened. I went to the bottom of the thread and didn't see the area to post... (I probably was on another thread and didn't realize I was in the wrong directory)

As such, I was going to but "couldn't"

Hey Luigi,

Someone bombed the Pearl Harbor movie board out of existence.

oh, and Troy's been wiped off the face of the earth too...

It was a day of infamy when it happened.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Monday, March 19, 2007 - 7:42 pm:

Please don't make a joke about there being not boards for the film Dick Tracy.

By Polls Voice on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 - 1:03 pm:

Don't worry, I don't think anyone could "face" the fact there there isn't any board for that movie.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, May 25, 2007 - 6:32 pm:

JoshM, I'm sorry I neglected to the have the Start a New Thread button active on the pertinent boards. I moved your board about Rotten Tomatoes' Comic Book Movies to the Movie Lists area, activated that button there, and went through the Sink, making sure to activate the button in all areas I found where it wasn't present (except for the Moderator Archvies section, where it isn't applicable). Thanks for pointing this out to me. :-)

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 11:17 am:

It would appear there is no such board. Feel free to add it to Action/Adventure.

By Polls Voice on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 7:28 pm:

okay, thank you Luigi. I just didn't want to add one if there was already one and mess up the work you've done to keep things tidy...

oh, and while I know you're not in charge of the Star Wars boards, can you figre out why they're still set to private? I've forgotten my password etc so I can't login to them to reply to things...

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 11:17 pm:

Any time, Polls. For future reference, if you want to search for a topic without looking through each subtopic thread, try using the Search function seen in the lefthand column tools.

As for Star Wars, I have no idea. I wasn't aware that they were. Who's the SW mod?

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 1:27 pm:

GROUP DISCUSSION:

What do the users of Nitcentral feel is NSFW (Not Suitable for work), and how should people posting external links address this? I have usually only concerned myself with making sure that links and other material followed Nitcentral policy, and certain aspects of Netiquette like spoiler warnings. But some may feel that other criteria should used. What should those criteria or protcol be? I'd like as broad a consensus as possible.

For context, this discussion stems from a thread that began here, which itself partially stems from an earlier thread that began here.

By Josh M on Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 4:21 pm:

Addressing it in the link: "NSFW" or, if you're not sure, "possibly NSFW".

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 4:25 pm:

How does one know if it's possibly NSFW?

By scottN on Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 4:50 pm:

If it's something you think your boss would not be happy with (sexual harrassment suit, etc...)

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 5:11 pm:

I just think a modest description of what the link is would be helpful--but not required. Certainly one would expect at a board with the standards ("No Sleaze") of Nitcentral you would not be linking to explicitly obscene material, but a heads-up of the material is, say, a woman in a bikini or something that contains REALLY LOUD audio components would be helpful.

By Brian Floyd, who rarely vists Nitcentral anymore but hasn't completely abandonded the place on Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 5:39 pm:

I definitely agree with Mikec.

For example, the fetus pics that got Peter (I think??) banned; I'd definitely want to know what the content is so I could avoid looking at it if it was something offensive\digusting like that or something gory.

By KAM on Friday, December 05, 2008 - 12:18 am:

There was also a related discussion of you providing more info about links here.

Something simple, at least, like "This is a video/cartoon/picture/article/etc." (Whichever choice is applicable.)

As for the NSFW warnings it's better to err on the side of caution as some places can get really tough on what violates their 'standards'.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, December 06, 2008 - 2:59 pm:

But my question is, what are the criteria? What criteria should alert my sense of "caution"? Nothing on that TunaFlix page came across as inappropriate to me. I'm asking for specifics.

By Benn (Benn) on Saturday, December 06, 2008 - 3:48 pm:

Nothing on that TunaFlix page came across as inappropriate to me. - Luigi Novi

Part of that, I'm sure, is the result of your work environment. Such as it is. You basically work on the streets handing out passes to movies, IIRC. In a work environment where there are mixed genders - and anyone could happen to glance at what's on your computer screen - any website with even the hint of sexuality, violence or foul language could conceivably get someone in trouble in these hypersensitive times. Basically, I would say, if a site could be considered PG rated or above, you might want to give fair warning when posting a link.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, December 06, 2008 - 7:18 pm:

First, I actually quit that job on June 20th, incidentally. Second, that was only part of the job. The other part was staffing the actual screenings, in which there were most certainly mixed genders.

And yeah, my limited experience in an office work environment, especially with Internet access (I worked for the Census Bureau for three months in 2000, during which I barely used a computer, and the Net not at all, and I worked for two days in January 2007 at a temp job) may color it.

So basically almost everything we see on the Net should be tagged NSFW! :-)

By Benn (Benn) on Saturday, December 06, 2008 - 7:46 pm:

God, we haven't kept in touch, have we? I didn't know you quit that job. Hope your current job is better for you.

So basically almost everything we see on the Net should be tagged NSFW! - Luigi Novi

Bit of hyperbole there, but really, where links are concerned, I'd keep in mind that we now live in a very hypersensitive, litigious society and because of that, just about anything that pertains to sex, violence or foul language can risky for those using their computers in an office environment. (Or their employers, for that matter.)

By Dustin Westfall (Dwestfall) on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 - 12:26 pm:

To me, NSFW tags are like Spoiler warnings. Some people need the most minute spoiler warned, while others have no problem with a full script being presented. If you side with the insensitive, the over-sensitive get up in arms about you ruining the show/movie for them. If you side with the over-sensitive, the insensitive might occasionally say something about it, but will usually just move on. In other words, it is generally better to be overly cautious.

The other thing is that the more information the person has about the link, the less likely that someone is going to complain. The catalyst for this discussion was a link labeled "LOL!" That gives the user no other information than you thought it was funny. Is it video, audio, or text? Is it playfully funny, more pointed funny, surreal-abstract funny, etc.? LOL tells the user none of these things.

Since we're on the movies board, think of the MPAA rating system. Over time, they have added more ratings to refine the data given, and have now started adding more detail as to the content that led to the rating (for example, violence, sexual situations, drug use, etc.). This gives the viewer more information to determine whether they want to watch that movie with the whole family, by themselves or not at all.

With links, my view is always that more information is better than less.

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 - 1:24 pm:

Yeah, for me, one of the biggest things is not so much images (unless, of course, they are very salacious or obscene), but if it contains audio/video components. It's one thing for a mildly risque image to pop up on your screen, it's another for your computer to start blasting loud music (that's happened to me before).

By Benn (Benn) on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 - 10:26 pm:

Over the years, I've had many people send me links and not tell me what I'd be clicking on. Even after I ask, "What is it" they refuse to tell me. I find that irritating. I much prefer to know what I'm about to look at or listen to so I can decide if I'm interested. It's my time that might be wasted. So yeah, personally, I'd like to have an idea of what I'd be looking at before I click on a link.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, December 11, 2008 - 9:40 pm:

I'm probably going to be posting less news and links as a result of this, though. Just today I saw the new trailer for Terminator: Salvation, on a site called Popaholic. Right before I posted the link though, I noticed one of those nude celebrity PETA ads in the upper right hand corner. Although it was tasteful, even lovely, I didn't post it. Since it was a YouTube video, I simply clicked on the YT link, and went to YT to get that site's link for it, but in general, I don't think I'm going to scour every page on which I find some noteworthy movie news, top to bottom, to see if there's anything sexy on it. It's just more work that I'm not interested in giving myself. I think I'll just voice my thoughts on the news, and leave it at that.

By Brian FitzGerald on Friday, December 12, 2008 - 6:23 am:

I've got to side with Luigi on this one. Of course I work in a restaurant where discussions about marijuana smoking and sexual positions are common ways to pass the time. But it seems to me that NSFW usually means either swearing or more commonly nudity.

By ScottN on Wednesday, January 07, 2009 - 12:14 pm:

Luigi, can you move "Heartbreak Ridge" from "Westerns" to "War"?

Thanks

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, January 07, 2009 - 8:00 pm:

More like merge the two boards that were made for the film, since there's one in Westerns, and one in War. (Grrrrrrrr...............)

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 10:33 am:

MODERATOR NOTE: In the Thriller/Horror genre, I created a subtopic for the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, into which I placed the following films:

Jason X
Freddy vs. Jason
Friday the 13th (2009)

I did this not only because it's my practice to create such subtopics in Movies when there are a minimum of three films to fill them, but also because of those three films, some start with "F", and one with "J", and since one of them involves a crossover from those two franchises, I figured putting both in the same subtopic would make it easier to organize them, and for users to find them.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Saturday, March 21, 2009 - 10:06 pm:

There are a lot of boards on the Bio/Historical/Religiious sub-board which are inaccessible, because they point to the old 64.whatever address.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 8:56 pm:

Scott, I'm sorry, but I don't think there's anything I can do about that. Perhaps you should ask Phil if he can do something about that.

MODERATOR NOTE: I've taken some boards in the People in Film subcat in the Cutting Room Floor, and moved them to their own subcat under People in Film: Specific Actors & Directors.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, May 07, 2009 - 10:25 pm:

MODERATOR NOTE: I have banned Andre Reichenbacher (Andre the Aspie) from my boards, for repeatedly violating Nitcentral's rules, mostly those pertaining to civility and profanity. I have dumped the last 13 posts that were either by him or made in response to him by others, which were on the Ghost Rider 2 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine boards. Any moderators wishing to review the posts can view them in the Garbage Dump in the Dumped Posts from Movies subtopic.

If Phil or any other moderators wish to block him, his IP is 72.224.254.88.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Friday, October 16, 2009 - 11:15 am:

I have moved three posts to the Dump from the Stepfather (2009) board. Please be advised that posts from banned posters, and any made in response to them, will be so removed.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, December 09, 2009 - 9:53 pm:

MODERATOR NOTE: To prevent posting from banned persons, I've restricted my boards to users registered in the following boards: Movies, Political Musings, Legal Musings, Voyager, Enterprise and Friends. If you're registered as a user for at least one of these boards, you should be able to post in all of those that I moderate (the first four listed above). I apologize for any inconvenience; let me know if you run into any problems.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 3:37 pm:

MODERATOR NOTE: I have placed the three films based on Dan Brown's novels into their own category, titled Dan Brown's Robert Langdon films. I know this may sound like a clunky title, and I hope people are able to find those films (Remember, you can use the site's Search engine if you don't initially find it), but it was all I could do, as the titles of those films, like the novels, do not center around a recurring word or phrase.

I have also done the same for the Final Destination films.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, May 03, 2010 - 11:21 pm:

Hey, Luigi? There's some complaints over on the Classic Trek "Tomorrow is Yesterday" board.

Apparently some people can't post even with their login.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Friday, June 25, 2010 - 3:31 am:

Luigi: there are a couple of guys whining vociferously commenting that they are unable to post on the Movies board and others. Their passwords don't work and they can't use the "non member option" (whatever that is). Are you able to help them? Their names are Tim McCree and John E. Porteous, and Daniel Phillips might be having a similar problem. At least one of them says he has emailed you in the past and had no reply, so I assume it may have spun off into your Junk box.

If you need to follow the conversation it's in the Doctor Who board, under New Series/Season 5/Cold Blood. Thanks!

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Friday, June 25, 2010 - 9:15 am:

Can you give me their IPs so I can see if they're posting from IPs that are blocked on my boards? That way I can unblock them.

As for complaints that I'm "lying down on the job" or haven't answered emails, I can assure all who are reading this that I did not receive any emails at either of my two active addresses regarding Nitcentral problems, so I have not "ignored" any.

Thank you for your assistance, Callie. I apologize to anyone who's had trouble accessing my boards.
