Is Psycho Janet Leigh is driving along with the gear lever set to Park. In the shower scene you make out her moleskin bakini, the edge of the crew member's head & the fact she's breathing when she's supposed to be dead.

50th anniversary Blu-Ray coming later this year, with lots of extras. It will be released in various countries at staggered times. More here. No word if there will be a concurrent DVD release.

But, there is a "Universal Legacy Series" DVD in print, that I assume will stay in print. That two-DVD set contains the Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode "Lamb To The Slaughter" on the second disc. More here.

When Marion stops at the car dealership to trade her car in, she buys a copy of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune from a vending machine. The LA Trib is the same newspaper that was the centerpiece of the series Lou Grant.
According to the commentary track, Hitchcock's car, a black Cadillac coupe, makes a cameo appearance in the film. You can see the car drive by in the scene where the cop is watching Marion while she's at the car dealership.

So does the car count as an extra cameo by Hitch?

Only if he drove the car, which I doubt he did. According to the commentary track on the Blu-Ray, Hitch was not a good driver, and had his wife do most of the driving. (Not that the above fact is germane to anything, but I thought I'd throw it in.) You can catch Hitchcock's cameo early in the film; he's seen through the window of the office where Marion Crane works.

I meant that as a joke, Adam. I'm well aware of where Hitch's cameo in the film is. (And having read some bios on Hitchcock, I'm also aware he did not drive.)

Natalie:

Tim: There were apparently three sequels to Psycho, all of which starred Anthony Perkins. They got okay reviews, but I can't help but feel like having Norman Bates get released from the asylum and go back to killing is just retreading the ground covered in the first movie.

Not apparently, Natalie, all three of those movies exist. I should know, I've seen them all.

And had poor Norman been left alone, he would have never gone back to killing. It was the machinations of Lila and Mary Loomis that caused that.

Norman Bates was only 2nd in the AFI's list of top 100 villains. Bloody Hannibal Lecter got the top spot.

Norman was based off of Ed Gein:

Yeah, that really happened. The movie actually toned things down (well, they had to, it was 1960, after all).

Still, Norman was the scary movie bloke, before Freddy Kruger, Jason Vorhees, and Michael Myers came along.
