The 40 Year Old Virgin

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: The 40 Year Old Virgin
By John A. Lang on Saturday, July 02, 2005 - 7:30 pm:

There's a "comedy" coming out this year called "The 40 Year Old Virgin".

QUESTION:

WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT THAT?

I'm 41 and I'm still a virgin.

Is this movie suggesting that 40+ men are losers and are objects of scorn & ridicule? (or to be treated as such?)

Is this movie suggesting that men throw away their virginity for "an easy lay" instead of waiting for that "special someone"?

This movie hasn't been released yet, but all I can say is "I'm not laughing".

Yep. Standard operating procedure for Hollywood.

When I saw a commercial for this turkey my first thought was they took an old teen 'comedy' and aged it 20some years.

IIRC there was a late '70s/early '80s movie called The Last American Virgin. I rememeber it because one of our local papers decided that the word Virgin was innapropriate so ads they ran for it called it "The Last American Good Girl". Ignoring the fact that the Virgin of the title was a guy.

I watched The 40 Year Old Virgin on HBO the other night (it's on all month, btw.) It's actually a pretty sweet comedy, and it had me until the last scene (more on that later.) Steve Carell plays Andy, the titular character who's never even been in a relationship, much less had sex at all. That is, until he meets Trish (Catherine Keener), a mother of three, and grandmother of one. I thought that the script was pretty fair, and that Andy was not treated as an object of scorn or ridicule (his favorite things are his collectible figures.)
Where the movie lost me is right at the end. Spoiler Alert (highlight):
Andy and Trish have the hots for each other, but try to postpone having sex until their 20th date. As it turns out, Andy marries Trish, long after their 20th date, and he saves himself until their wedding night. For some unknown reason, Andy then breaks into song while he's making love to Trish, and the song is "Aquarius (Let The Sun Shine In)." The movie then turns into a production number, and the credits roll. What ever posessed Steve Carell and Judd Apatow (the writers; Apatow directed) to do that? It cheapened the movie, and made it much lamer than it had any right to be.

I saw that one on HBO way back in 1983. IIRC, the main plot (Spoiler Alert) was the titular character trying to obtain an abortion for this pregnant young girl he's become enamored of; her boyfriend having walked out. After he gets her the abortion, the girl goes back to the guy who got her pregnant in the first place.

I thought the production number at the end of "The 40 Year Old Virgin" was funny. I also don't think the audience is meant to take the number as actually happening in the movie. It's an interpretation of Andy's exuberance upon having had great sex for the first time. Also, this doesn't occur while Andy's making love to Trish, but after they're done.

OK, I'll give you that. It's an enjoyable movie nonetheless, and I do recommend it. John, if you have HBO, give it a chance. Won't cost you anything but two hours of your time. I'm sure it will be on a lot over the next few weeks and months.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 4:23 am:

The title is a nit, in that it is grammatically incorrect. There should be a hyphen between "40" and "Year" and another between "Year" and "Old".

John A. Lang: WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT THAT? I'm 41 and I'm still a virgin. Is this movie suggesting that 40+ men are losers and are objects of scorn & ridicule? (or to be treated as such?)
Luigi Novi: I don't know if the movie portrayed the virginity itself as funny, but rather, the situations that Andy finds himself in (though admittedly, I didn't find much about this film to be funny--with the exception of the scene where David is showing his derriere on the store video monitors).

As for the second question, well, yeah, as Keith pointed out, they are treated as such, particularly those in their thirties or above, I guess. Hell, even losing it in your mid-twenties as I did may be seen as being a "late" bloomer.

Why was Andy still a Virgin at 40 ?
Was he Incel ?

Why was Andy still a Virgin at 40?

I don't know, and what's more, I don't care.

The plot of the movie require he be a virgin at 40, so he was.

There are any number of reasons someone might be.

Honestly, in the end, it no one's business. Why do people even care? What difference does it make in their life?

I think people probably judge this sort of thing based on their own experience. I think they're really asking 'what would cause *me* to still be a virgin when I reach that age or to have still been one' (depending on their age).

Someone might have mental or physical health issues of any sort that might make them unable or unwilling to be with another person in that way.

It could all be in their head. I don't mean in a mental health sort of way, I mean in a no one will want to be with me because of this but in reality that's not true.

Some don't have much if any desire for it. As for why, again, all sorts of things could cause that.

There are other possible explanations.

What it comes down to is, we might want to ask 'what's wrong with him?'. Maybe nothing is. Maybe something is or maybe it's multiple things, real or imagined, major, minor or some combination.

In the end though, imo, mocking someone who might (but not necessarily) already have enough issues it is feels cruel and immature. And, it's none of our business.

I do however get that this is just a movie. The movie might make this fictitious characters situation our business, but when it comes to real people, it isn't and imo, shouldn't be.

On the old imdb.com messageboard for
The 40 year old Virgin, several years ago, someone posted a comment about the various levels 1-10 or
1-12 categories of Bachelor Life, I can't locate it

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, August 12, 2023 - 7:12 am:

And you won't.

The IMDB message boards were shut down, back in 2017, because they had become what I called Troll Central.

Lack of moderation at said boards allowed them to be infested by racists, xenophobes, homophobes, and even pedophiles. The scum of the Earth were allowed to run rampant on those boards. This went on for years until IMDB finally threw up their arms and pulled the plug in 2017.

That is why you can't locate it anymore.

I've read it was supposedly because the owners couldn't figure out a way to monetize them. They were a cost with no income. Regardless, I still miss them. I had many questions answered and answered others myself. The lack of moderation was a problem, but there still was so much useful stuff on them.

From TV Tropes:

quote:

The forums were shut down because the Internet Jerks had gotten out of control, to the point of becoming a punchline on par with the YouTube comment section.

And this is why many YouTubers now choose to switch off commenting on their videos.

Regardless, I still miss them. I had many questions answered and answered others myself. The lack of moderation was a problem, but there still was so much useful stuff on them.

All the useful stuff was squeezed out by the trolls, who had completely taken over by the end.

There was really no other option than to pull the plug.
