Happy Feet

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Animation: Non-Disney Films: Happy Feet

I am staggered this movie has no board.

Unquestionably the best animated film of 2006. Apart from the amazing effects (utilising the same motion capture technology they used for Gollum- even using Andrew Lesnie from the LOR films to bring this to life!) there is a beautiful story.

Whilst it would be easy to bash the global warming message over an audiences head (like in Ice Age 2) and also to paint humans as nasty, mean people (like most animated films do), this film really strives to show that we are affecting the animal kingdom, but that we have the ability to help the planet.

Robin Williams does a number of voices and is joined by some great vocal talent including Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Anthony LaPaglia and the late Steve Irwin.

The musical sequences are astounding (my favourite being "Somebody To Love" and a latin-version of "Leader Of the Pack") and the dialogue is quick and razor sharp.

There are also some amazing action sequences (one in particular left me breathless when the penguins slide through an avalanche).

What makes me doubly proud of this movie is that it is directed by George Miller and involves a large portion of Aussie talent.

It's not just a great Australian film, or a great animated film, it's a great film.

Run, don't walk, to see this one.
