Borat

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: Borat
By Adam Bomb on Monday, October 15, 2007 - 7:38 am:

I'm surprised that there's not already a page for this film on this site, but..
An absolutely tasteless, stupid, disgusting, vile, very politically incorrect film - and I loved every second of it. If you think Bad Santa was in poor taste, you ain't seen nuthin'. The full title is: Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. It takes as long to say the full title as it does to watch the film, which runs 84 minutes. If you have HBO, it's playing this month, and On-Demand. So, "Demand" it immediately.

Borat Sagdiyev..................Sacha Baron Cohen
Azamot Bagatov........................Ken Davitan
Pamela Anderson...........................Herself

Rated "R" for just about any reason you can think of.

Borat is a journalist from Kazakhstan who comes to the U.S. to do a documentary. Once he gets wind of Pamela Anderson, the journey, and the documentary, get sidetracked.

Borat was a character on Cohen's Da Ali-G Show, where he played a dim-witted wanna-be rapper. That character starred in his own film, Ali-G In Da House. I still don't think Cohen as Ali-G is funny. And, because of that, I was about to blow Borat off. Thanks to my great girlfriend, I didn't.
No nitpicks here; I just wanted to get a page for the film up. Feel free to nitpick at your leisure.

The naked fight scene went on a bit too long for my taste.

By Adam Bomb on Friday, October 19, 2007 - 8:17 am:

I still crack up at that scene.
I did come up with one nitpick - Borat first got his Pamela Anderson fixation from watching an episode of Baywatch as he was channel surfing in a New York City hotel room. But - IIRC, Baywatch hasn't been run here in a long time. It stopped production in 2001, and was last seen in New York a few years ago.

By ScottN on Friday, October 19, 2007 - 9:07 am:

Potential anti-nit. He was channel surfing. Could have been a rerun on a cable channel.

By Adam Bomb on Friday, October 19, 2007 - 9:26 am:

Potential anti-anti nit. (Am I insane, or what?) I keep a kind of loose tab regarding what's on all around the dial (translation: I watch too much TV) and I don't recall Baywatch being on any broadcast or cable channel at the time Borat was made. Of course, I could be wrong, as Baywatch is one show I never watched, or gave a second thought about. I know it was re-run on Spike for a while, but I can't recall when.

When Borat starts his driving lesson, he turns the steering wheel to the left. But, the car is shown making a right turn.

There's a lawsuit filed against this movie's producers (one of many, I understand) by the ettiquette expert "interviewed" by Borat. More here. Why she waited until almost a year after the movie's theatrical release is beyond me. Especially now, since the movie's widely available on DVD and playing a lot on HBO. Where even more viewers can witness the "interview".

By Adam Bomb on Monday, October 29, 2007 - 10:21 am:

Fair warning: Another of Baron-Cohen's characters, Bruno, is headed to the big screen in 2008.

By Adam Bomb on Wednesday, December 05, 2007 - 10:56 am:

There's been yet another lawsuit filed over this film, this time by driving instructor Michael Psenicska, over alleged deception on the part of the filmmakers. More here.

Sounds like a cheap ploy for some of the cash that his movie generated. I remember when it first came out that same guy was in good spirits; freely telling the media how he came home and told his son about what happened. His son than said it sounded like a prank from 'Da Ali G Show' and showed him the DVD, at witch point Mr Psenicska realized that he had been had.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - 7:07 am:

Borat may yet have a chance with Pamela Anderson, as she's filed for divorce from her husband of two months, Rick Salomon. More here.

By Adam Bomb on Monday, December 24, 2007 - 10:41 pm:

Sacha Baron Cohen has announced that he's retiring his "Borat" and "Ali G" characters. Now, losing Ali G is no great loss, but I was hoping for a Borat sequel. My girlfriend says that Cohen and Borat are too well known now, as a result of the success of this film, and Cohen won't be able to pull the same kind of pranks anymore.

God, I love this movie! I've seen it twice now and laughed my arse off both times. It's so politically incorrect and points out the stupidity in political correctness in the process.

One question, just where did Borat get that Pamela Anderson bootleg DVD? If it was from the frat boys, why'd they let him keep it? Were they too drunk to stop him?

Where'd he get his suit after Azamat abandoned him? Inside the ice cream truck, after Azamat left, Borat tells the camera that the contents of the satchel is all Azamat left him. It did not have the suit in it. And Borat was wearing red pyjamas in that scene. So where was the suit?

And where'd he get the marriage sack? When he shows it to Pamela Anderson, he points out how it has both his and Pamela's names on it and, IIRC, the date on it. That's something he would've had to have specially made. And they really didn't have that much time to have someone custom make it. So where'd it come from?

"I very excite!"

A sequel, titled Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, will be released on October 23 by Amazon. I assume it will be streamed, as movie theaters here are either closed, or only allowing a limited amount of patrons. More here.

Donald Trump's lawyer/butt boy Rudy Ghoul...Guiliani got pranked in the new Borat sequel. More on that here.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Thursday, October 22, 2020 - 8:49 am:

I absolutely loathe Sacha Baron Cohen and that thoroughly despicable Borat character of his. Far far more than I loathe the entire US Republican party, Trump included, put together.
