The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Science Fiction/Fantasy: The X-Files: I Want to Believe
By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 - 11:50 pm:

Filming start date.

By Josh M on Friday, November 02, 2007 - 1:38 am:

And it apparently has a release date, too.

That seems really fast.

Shouldn't this be in the X-Files thread? Does X-Files even have a mod anymore?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, January 17, 2008 - 12:18 pm:

First pics, and some vague, non-spoilerish (IMO) info about the content.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 12:03 pm:

Hi-res pics. (Scroll down, or do a search on "X-Files".)

New trailer.

By Brian FitzGerald on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 7:58 am:

I like it.

By Josh M on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 3:20 pm:

I have a feeling this movie's going to leave a lot of questions. Especially concerning the show given the movie's standalone nature.

Poster.

By Adam Bomb on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 7:32 am:

Budget was a bit low for a summer blockbuster these days - $35 million.

By Brian FitzGerald on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 9:46 pm:

Hopefully that's a good thing as it isn't going to have to be a huge hit to make a profit and increasing the chances of a sequel. Chris Carter has said that while this film will be a stand alone "monster of the week" story he already has plans for another movie that will pick up the story that was setup in the final X-Files episode set up.

By Josh M on Friday, July 25, 2008 - 6:17 pm:

SPOILER WARNING, though I think we can expect that on the movie board after the film's been released.

Just got back from it. I'll admit, my expectations were a little low from the trailer (and the early reviews). Glad to say I was pleasantly surprised. It is very much a standalone story and afterward I felt that it could have easily been a non-X-Files story. As I suspected, it really doesn't answer any questions left over from the show (except for what are Mulder and Scully up to. And one character who shall remain nameless but for whom I almost cheered when I saw)

I actually found the story engrossing and was drawn into it. Billy Connolly does a fine job though there's less of him than I expected, Amanda Peet's characters has her moments and I liked what seemed to be hints of a crush on the legend and man that is Mulder. Xzibit's character was pretty run-of-the-mill and really only there to provide the skeptical voice of authority. And the bad guys... well, the movie was really more about the return of Mulder and Scully which is unfortunate because I think Battlestar Galactica has shown me that Callum Keith Rennie is capable of quite a lot.

Nits:

When the agents take Father Joe to the house where the first agent was abducted, they intentionally go to the wrong house, apparently as a test. He seemingly uses his psychic powers to deduce this. The only problem is, it appears that the house across the street, the correct house, has police tape that should be easily visible from where they parked.

I'm a little surprised Scully was able to see the 25 2 on that mailbox at the end. I guess the light hit is just right.

For one of the two shows that started Nitcentral I'm a bit surprised that only one person has commented on this movie. Either way, SPOILERS!

I don't think I can say it better than Josh, it's a stand-alone story, so don't go into this movie thinking all will be answered. One thing that shocked me was that Mulder and Scully not only had a relationship but had a child named William together, who had died of some illness. I think I liked it better when they were collegues with some of tension between them.

I'm usually pretty good at guessing the outcome of movies within the first fifteen minutes but I had no idea what the 'bad guys' were doing until it was revealed, which was a little lame for the big screen IMO. I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure it would take a lot more than matching blood types to pull off what they were trying to do. Also, the second victim didn't look 34 at all to me, more like 24.

So this priest leads them to a severed arm, which I would hope the FBI thourghly looked into his alibi, and they give up on him when he's about to do something similar when there are lives at stake? Believe the guy or not they still have a duty to investigate all avenues to prevent loss of life. They also let that organ currier go pretty quick before they did any further research. It's leagal to hold anybody for a minimum of 24 hours before charging somebody with a crime, especially when immigration status is being looked into (wink, wink).

I know there was something else I wanted to mention but I once again forgot to bring something to write with to the movies.

Nope, Scully gave birth to William during the series (8 I think, might have been early in season 9), and eventually gave him up for adoption in mid-season 9.

I did have a feeling that the child with cancer that she was treating would have turned out to be William, glad they didn't go that way.

Ok, I was way off there, thanks Chris! I guess that is a good indication that I didn't watch much of the show in the later seasons, and not a great deal in the earlier ones either.

DVD release is on 12/2/08. More here.

This is now playing on HBO, and probably will turn up on the channels for the next month or so. Ford must have given the film's producers a good product placement deal, as Ford cars are as prominently featured as the Olds Intrigue was in the last X-Files movie. We see a Taurus, a Fusion, and an Expedition being driven throughout the movie.
The end credits swoop by so fast that it's impossible to read them all.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 - 8:44 am:

I believe Ford was also prominently featured in the series finale as well.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 - 9:34 pm:

Should this board be moved onto the XFiles board?
