The Black Hole

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Science Fiction/Fantasy: The Black Hole

There used to be a board for this, I can't find it....anyway...

This was Disney's "answer" to "Star Wars"...if only they'd spent as much time in the plot as they did in the special effect, this would have been a better movie.

The unbelievable: Kate, Mr. Pizer, & Captain Hollander are out in space without space suits trying to get aboard the probe ship...RIGHT!

The stupid: The shooting gallery scene:
Why would robots need to have a shooting gallery? Additionally, S.T.A.R. shows anger over losing the contest. Since when do robots have emotions?

The unexplained: Why did Reinhardt wait until the Palamino to get there before attempting to enter the black hole? They've been there for 20 years...what was Reinhardt doing all that time? Just staring at the thing?

I loved the Cygnus.

This was a stunning looking film with a terrible script.I recall going to see the movie with a group of my friends when it first came out.I knew early that we might be in trouble when they had the scene where the captain orders Kate to get in contact with V.I.N.C.E.N.T.,the robot, with her esp!!! One of my pals & I looked at each other with our eyes widend & with an expression of incredulous disbelief. As we feared, the rest of the movie went downhill from then on.

I think Alan Dean Foster's novelisation explained that her telepathy was actually the result of an implant and used a system that allowed her to contact properly equippped robots mentally.

It still seems a dopey concept to me Tim.

By Douglas Nicol (Douglas_nicol) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 6:46 pm:

The Cygnus was a beautiful design, one now defunct website described it as a cross between a gothic cathedral and a victorian railway station.

It was kinda sad to see the ship go down.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Thursday, January 01, 2009 - 12:32 am:

Yvette Mimieux has not been any film since this movie was filmed. I guess this movie killed her movie career.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Sunday, January 29, 2012 - 3:46 pm:

Other problems:

At one point, VINCENT says, "This ship (the probe ship) has been programmed" (to Reinhardt's course)

Well....UN-program it then!

How did the limping robot outrun Harry Booth...who was RUNNING towards him?

How did the Captain of the Palomino get that nasty cut over his eye at the end of the movie?

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, October 07, 2013 - 6:53 pm:

Sometime after the beginning of the movie, Alex asks, "But how can anyone be out here ahead of us?"

DUH! They launched before you did...and if you would have waited a few more seconds, the answer would've been staring at you right in your face during the holographic projector sequence!

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, October 07, 2013 - 6:55 pm:

Idea for improvement:

Alex unmasks the android and the person under the mask is Kate's father.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, October 07, 2013 - 6:58 pm:

B.O.B.'s explanation of: "Reinhardt only turned on the lights to prevent any damage to the Cygnus" makes no sense whatsoever.

Damage from what?

The Palomino? Hardly a threat.

The Black Hole? The Cygnus has been standing there for 20 years.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, October 07, 2013 - 7:04 pm:

* When the crew first meet Reinhardt, Harry Booth says, "You always had a flair for theatrical ENTRANCES."

A few seconds later, Reinhardt says, "Perhaps it was one of my what you term 'my theatrical GESTURES', Mr. Booth."

* Just before the tour of the Cygnus, Captain Holland "whispers" to Kate on how Reinhardt hesitated on turning on the lights...the next shot show Reinhardt listening in.

How could he not hear it? The "whisper" was hardly a whisper at all!

Alex unmasks the android, and the person under the mask is Old Mr. Jones, the Lighthouse Keeper. And he would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for those meddling kids!

Thanks... I couldh't resist.

In this movie's defense, they DID have spacesuits all ready for the cast to wear during the spacewalk scene...but they looked so fake, the cast refused to wear them.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Saturday, February 08, 2014 - 3:08 pm:

In one scene, Durant says, "They could've blown us out of the SKY"

Later, Reinhardt says, "Blow them out of the SKY"

There is no "sky" in outer space.

Like Chang said in STVI..."Blow you out of the stars" would make more sense.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Saturday, February 08, 2014 - 3:14 pm:

Why is the humanoid/ android machine still in use after 20 years?

Why did it take so long for Reinhardt to realize that the Captain, Mr. Pizer & Harry Booth were missing from the Dining Room?

Why didn't anyone have the nerve to confront Reinhardt at the dinner table about what they saw on the Cygnus?

How long was that Probe Ship gone...seeing it's just returning RIGHT NOW from the Event Horizon?

The expression might simply be a liguistic holdover, similar to "the sun rises", something that no longer corresponds to the known reality but remains part of every day speach.

Remember, they are close to a black hole. Time doesn't flow at the same rate in such strong gravity fields. The Cygnus might have been missing for 20 years, but from its point of view, it might have hovered over the black hole for only a few years, even a few months. The probe ship, which went all the way to the event horizon, would have experienced even more time distortion.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, February 10, 2014 - 3:34 am:

I never thought of that. Thanks.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Tuesday, May 06, 2014 - 7:33 am:

This film was the last movie released (to date) with a musical overture before the opening credits.

John A. Lang (Johnalang) - At one point, VINCENT says, "This ship (the probe ship) has been programmed" (to Reinhardt's course) Well....UN-program it then! How can they do that without Reinhardt's authorisation code?

By the way, this was the first film I ever saw at the cinema. I remember it was a double feature - I think the other film was about country and western style funerals

DUMB LINE: "Their (Cygnus') mission was to search for habitable life..." Kate

HABITABLE LIFE (?)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, June 22, 2020 - 5:33 am:

What was up with that ending. Reinhardt and Maximillian end up merged into one being in Hell?

By R W F Worsley (Notanit) on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 - 9:09 am:

Why would robots need to have a shooting gallery?

It allows them to check/maintain the accuracy of their targeting systems.

Why did Reinhardt wait until the Palamino to get there before attempting to enter the black hole? They've been there for 20 years...what was Reinhardt doing all that time? Just staring at the thing?

1) He wanted an audiance to witness his triumph, and to take the news back to Earth.

2) He's been spending 20 years fine tuning the equipment needed to ensure a safe passage.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 - 5:43 am:

I'm surprised that Disney allowed that ending to happen. Whomever was in charge must have been asleep that day.

By JD (Jdominguez) on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 - 6:54 pm:

This was post-Walt, pre-Renaissance Disney, much more likely to go experimental and dark with their films.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 - 5:27 am:

Ah.
