Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Animation: Disney Films: Up
By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 4:34 pm:

Pixar's next film is 2-D.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 1:49 pm:

Actually Luigi, the next Pixar film is called "Wall-E" and will be out around July....

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 3:43 pm:

I meant after that.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, April 11, 2008 - 2:52 pm:

Set for May 29th 2009 release.

I also erred in my first post above; The film will be in Pixar's usual 3-D. The image shown in that first post has now been redone on Pixar's familiar 3-D style.

Teaser trailer.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Friday, November 07, 2008 - 3:46 pm:

New trailer. I liked it. The concept looks interesting, and the trailer was funny and whimsical.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Monday, February 02, 2009 - 6:33 pm:

Superbowl trailer. It's mostly previously seen material.

You can also seen an additional 44 second clip called "Adventures with Carl and Russell" at Disney.com.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Monday, March 09, 2009 - 4:12 pm:

The new trailer is up (no pun intended).

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 5:53 pm:

Saw it today. Very good. It definitely deserves the 98% Fresh rating that it currently boasts as of this writing at Rotten Tomatoes. It was a very heartfelt story, tinged with sadness by the time the initial setup had been given at the ten minute mark, and filled with literal cliffhanger-type action and adventure that had me gripping me seat at times.

I highly recommend it.

---NITS & NOTES
When Carl and Russel are sitting on a rock talking at one point, Russel mentions that his father is not around. He then mentions a woman in his life named Phyllis, but tells Carl that Phyllis is not her mother. But who is she? I don't recall this ever being explained later. Maybe I missed a line of dialogue?

Possible Spoiler Nit
The premise with the dogs threw me off a bit. I don't know if those implausible collars were the writers' way of anthropomorphizing characters to give the story more dialogue-based humor than it otherwise would've had, though I did appreciate that they made it seem a bit more plausible by making the speech simple, sounding like what a computer using a limited number of phrases in proper English. I can even buy the idea of training them to do certain complex tasks, but teaching them to cook (unless it was limited to throwing things in a microwave, nuking them and then taking them out) was a bit of a stretch, and even though I know it's a fantasy, I could've done without the dogs as fighter pilots.

Definite Spoiler Nit
The one thing that did throw me off a bit was Carl and Muntz's respective ages. In the beginning of the film, I figured Carl for maybe a five year old, and Muntz for a man of at least 30. This would put 25 years between them, but they appear to be the same age when they meet later in the film. In fact, Carl looks far more "elderly" than Muntz, who appears far more well-preserved, even if he too, is elderly. Maybe it's all the exercise inherent to living out in the wilderness by himself, but I still found it hard to accept. I tried, and I think I came up with a possible age gap that works. Maybe Carl was about ten, and Muntz could've been say, 25. After all, the little mustache might make him look older, and the characters are rendered and animated in a way that makes exact ages difficult to pinpoint with great accuracy. So maybe there's only 15 years between them. Now elder Carl looks no younger than 70 to me. That would make Muntz maybe 85, though he looks really good for 85, perhaps because of the aforementioned good living.

I liked this film. In fact, because there was no sledgehammer message, I liked it quite a bit more than Wall-E.

It was a very cute film. TrekGrrl thought that Carl being Ellie's adventure was sad, but I thought it was sweet -- age difference, I suppose.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 8:20 am:

There were certainly some "caution" messages in Wall-E, but I didn't think they were sledgehammer ones. Oh well. To each their own. :-)

The context implied to me that it was his dad's girlfriend/new wife.

Why so?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 8:45 am:

Not sure. I didn't quite get her POV myself.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 8:46 am:

Also, my guess is that the woman with Doug at the WE ceremony was Phyllis.

By Don F (TNG Moderator) (Dferguson) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 2:09 pm:

See I thought that was Russel's mom. (unless there was dialog to support that she was dead and I missed it) From the way he described Phylis I got the impression that she didn't think much of him yet the woman they show in the end was very excited for him.

I was surprised by this movie, we went to it because a friend wanted to treat our son to a movie but he insisted we come along so it turned into a family outing. I was really taken back by how much feeling this movie had. I really felt for Carl and could understand his motivations.

I personally thought the dogs were hilarious. Their speech was a very humorous blend of limited translator vocabulary and literal translation of dog's thoughts, such as when Doug pointed at something he literally said "POINT!"
Alpha also had me cracking up, the very articulate speech, yet the grammar being just enough off to throw you such as "I am very much going to enjoy the feeling I am about to receive" instead of just saying "I'm gonna bite you!"

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 2:17 pm:

DonF, I got the exact same impression regarding Russel's mom, and also of Phylis' lack of affection for Russel.

"I personally thought the dogs were hilarious. Their speech was a very humorous blend of limited translator vocabulary and literal translation of dog's thoughts, such as when Doug pointed at something he literally said "POINT!"" - DonF

And don't forget (heard briefly in the crowd of dogs after Muntz declared them friends) "I temporarily really like you!"

Yes! I loved that part. I think the best part about the dogs was watching them serve the meal. they would pour the champagne and look all sophisticated...then pour it all over the floor after the glass was full. or when they presented the food to Russel...then proceeded to eat off his plate, showing that no matter how much training you gave them they were still dogs.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 4:30 pm:

SQUIRREL!!!!

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 5:51 pm:

I also assumed that that was Russell's Mom at the ceremony. If that was Phyllis, and Phyllis is his dad's girlfriend/wife, it wouldn't make sense for her to be there, rather than his mom.

"I was just hiding under your porch because I love you" - Doug

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Thursday, August 20, 2009 - 7:55 am:

DVD and Blu-Ray discs to be released 11/10/09.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Sunday, January 20, 2019 - 7:29 pm:

I can no longer watch this film. I cry the entire time.
