After Charleton Heston died earlier this year, I took it upon myself to track down a DVD copy of this dystopian-future sci-fi classic to rent. I got it from my library, and when I saw it, it not only changed my perspective on the human race and how we operate on a daily basis, but it really is brilliant early-70's social commentary on how our civilation could possibly collapse into utter chaos and ruin in the very near future!

I mean, back in 1973, the creators of this movie proposed the idea that by 2022, the world would become overpopulated and overpolluted, and as a result there are massive food shortages. The world government, in an attempt to prevent riots and outright anarchy, rations out to the population little squares of foodstuff wafers, with names like Soylent Red and Soylent Yellow, claiming that they are made from soybeans and lentils.

Heston plays a cop who is called to investigate the murder of a wealthy businessman who was a higher-up at the Soylent Corporation, and eventually uncovers a worldwide conspiracy surrounding the new Soylent Green, which is in short supply and is getting rarer by the day.

And as for that conspiracy.....well, if you don't know about it already, I'm not going to spoil it for you. Watch this classic sci-fi/morality tale and see it for yourself!
