Lost in Translation

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Drama: Lost in Translation

God, what a boring, depressing film.

I know that the film is supposed to be about existential ennui, but it should present that idea in a way that makes the audiences sympathetic to it, and not in a way that makes that audience feel ennui themselves just by watching it. Being invested in a story inherently means that the audience must have some degree of enthusiasm to follow it. Garden State did a much better job of depicting depression, and characters' struggle with it, without passing it onto the viewer.

There's no narrative conflict at all in this film. Aside from a slight tension that occurs near the end after Bill Murray sleeps with that lounge singer that lasts about two seconds, there's no sense of rising or falling action, or anything being resolved. Sure, the characters themselves feel a sense of conflict internally, but nothing happens to change that by the end of the film.

I can't believe Sophia Coppola actually won an Oscar for writing this piece of cr@p. I only saw two of the other nominees, and while Dirty Pretty Things wasn't a great movie, IMO, even it had a better script, as did Finding Nemo.

See, this is why I really don't feel it's worth my while to read one of your reviews, Luigi. We are so diametrically opposed on opinions. I really liked Lost In Translation. You hate it. IDIC, buddy.

Or, to use a couple of clichés, "Different strokes for different folks", and, one of our resident illustrator's favorites, "to each their own".

Right. I don't mean that as a slam. Where information is being given, I don't have any problem with Luigi. Or when he posts nits. It's just that he and I seem to have very different tastes. It's not anything against him. It's just how we roll.

I really liked this film too. Boring? Watched it with a bunch of friends and there were howls of laughter.

Resident illustrator? Hmmm....thanks, Josh. I think I like that nickname. :-)

I do find it interesting, though, Benn, despite your insistence that your position is non-confrontational, that you state you "don't have a problem" with my nitpicking or informational posts, thereby implying (or at least, it could be inferred that) you "have a problem" with my reviews. :-)

You don't like a lot of my reviews. I'm cool with that. To each their own. I'm not threatened by people who love movies I dislike, or dislike movies I really enjoyed. :-)
