Holy cow! This looks SO cool!

The CGI makes the cycles look exactly as they should've looked in 1982, and the continuity looks cool too!

By Bookwyrme (Ibookwyrme) on Monday, July 27, 2009 - 6:08 pm:

It looks fantastic.

But... does Tron really need a sequel?

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, July 27, 2009 - 8:08 pm:

The helmets are wrong.
The Deadly disc is wrong
The Costumes are wrong.

No Cindy Morgan as Lori

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Monday, July 27, 2009 - 9:07 pm:

How can they be wrong? Given Jeff Bridges' appearance, the film obviously takes place decades after the original film, just as decades have passed in real life. Why can't they have changed? (Or by "wrong", did you just mean that you didn't like them?)

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, July 27, 2009 - 9:28 pm:

OK...I see what you mean.

But...the "Original Look" was better.

Wantitneeditmusthaveitmostanticipatedsequelinthehistoryofmylifererezramhoorah!!!!!!!

That is exciting! And WAY better than the murky comiccon footage. :-) I am SO looking forward to this!!!! TRON is probably my favorite childhood film, the first movie I introduced my wife to... heck, I used to reserve the record (album... you know, the disc you play with the needle? I think it was a read-along audiobook) from the library instead of the VHS (you know, cassette tape? The magnetic, easily destroyable strips instead of a rectangular plastic shell?) and then try to convince my parents we should get a record player just so I could listen to it! I am psyched out of my mind about this film!!!!

Lightcycles with organic trails instead of basic squareforms on a grid? Weird.

Jeff Bridges AND Bruce Boxleitner!! Hurray! No Cindy Morgan, though? I agree, John- sad. (Odd, as the video game also had 2 of 3- Cindy and Bruce, but no Jeff. In that continuity, though, Alan had a teenage son, Jett, and Laura had died in a laser accident- though Alan's AI, Ma3a, had her voice and some of her personality, raising questions of whether all of Laura was really lost... I wonder if the movie will follow this continuity, and whether Bruce Boxleitner will be back as Alan, or as TRON. If only as TRON, the movie could easily co-exist in parallel to the game, which doesn't touch on what Flynn is doing.)

It will be interesting to see the conceptual updates to the film- how will the computer world- based on a DOS-style level of computer processing- be altered by advanced OSs (Windows, Mac OS X, etc.), graphical interfaces (JPEGs and other image files must outnumber the normal 'programs' a thousand-to-one, or perhaps they've become new 'clothes' or 'accessories' to go with their designated programs?) What about the advent of the internet? Is that still processed by I/O towers, or are there larger 'superhighways?' what about online apps? Are they vagrants, drifters, along the highway with no set 'home?' Will the whole look of the place change due to updated technology, or will there just be new layers overtop of the old 'world' since the basic processing still boils down to the same kind of things? Again, the video game showed some of this in detail, but the movie may go a completely different route. It will be interesting to speculate on- and to see- how a much more complex generation of computers is represented by the film.

And finally... BRING BACK THE BIT! BRING BACK THE BIT! (Come on, chant it with me- we don't have long to get a movement started, here! :-) )

"But... does Tron really need a sequel?"-Bookwyrm
YES!!!!!!!! :-) (TRON 2.0 was a pretty awesome sequel video game- it's on my top 5 list for game stories, and a worthy successor graphically. Clearly there's a precedent for a quality follow-up.) Actually, it looks like they may be taking the outdoor-rider lightcycles concept from the game; though perhaps not, as the design is very different.

Great trailer. I hope I get to see the original before this comes out. I had a Netflix subscription last year, and tried to put it on my queue, but it was out of stock, and now I no longer have one. Even worse, the Hollywood Video nearby closed down months ago. Hopefully the smaller video store down the street is still open and has a copy.

If not you may be able to find it ON DEMAND if you have cable.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - 3:08 pm:

I have been eagerly waiting for this since I saw the trailer! Was that a year ago now? It looks really good and I can only imagine what's going to happen. All good questions Zarm, and I also hope the Bit makes an appearance. I have been getting more people to watch the original movie, since so many don't have a clue what it is. I hope there's a good turnout both at the theater and on this board :-)

Saw it in 3D yesterday and it was great! Couldn't say the extra money for the 3D was worth it but I still rather enjoyed it. The visuals, the music, the sound effects... it all took me back to the original. SPOILERS!

Maybe it was clearly stated in the first trailer and I missed it but the whole race with who we think is the younger Flynn ending with "It's just a game!" "Not anymore." wasn't in the movie. If Sam didn't want to be a vocal part of Encom why does he care if the new OS is free or not? We're suppose to believe Tron is dead but you can clearly see the familiar "T" on one of the uniforms, whom you never see the wearer's face.

I don't really understand the significance of those other programs, whom Olivia's character played the last of its kind. So they're not like regular programs, how is that going to change all the stuff Flynn and Allen were talking about? If a program were to enter the real world does that mean they're immortal?

I'm sorry to say the bit was not in the movie, not exactly anyway. When Clue tracked where Flynn was staying 'off-grid' there were two bit-like ornaments on his mantle. Aside from a few very predictable parts I thought this was a great sequel! It was nice to see that Disney really tried to make an intelligent follow-up to the story (IMO) and not just throw in too much junk with spiffy effects. I don't think there will be a third but you never know.

-End of Line

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Tuesday, April 05, 2011 - 6:50 pm:

It was great seeing the following return:

Jeff Bridges

Bruce Boxleitner

The Recognizers

The Light Cycles

The Identity Discs...including the monologue about the discs that was used by Sark in the original movie

A lot of the original lines from the original Tron.

Solar Sailor

Sark's ship.

The I/O tower

Flynn's Arcade

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Wednesday, April 06, 2011 - 6:43 am:

Unfortunately missing:
The helmets
The body circuitry
The look
The tone
The feel
The actual character of Flynn
The spirit of the original

:-)

(But agreed, John, it was nice to see those elements- especially the identity disc speech! And I have to admit, much as I loathed the film, the lightcycle-planes were pretty awesome)

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Wednesday, April 06, 2011 - 6:10 pm:

HUGE NIT: (In my opinion)

Sam Flynn lives in a garage (or something similar)

His father owned an arcade

The arcade is closed & unused.

Here's the problem I have with this:

If >MY< father owned an arcade & it was now closed and unused....I'D MOVE INTO THE ARCADE...AND PLAY GAMES ALL DAY LONG!

PAR-TAY!

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Wednesday, April 06, 2011 - 6:11 pm:

BTW...I did see a tank in the movie too

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Wednesday, April 06, 2011 - 6:12 pm:

NANJAO:

In Sam's room is a movie poster for "The Black Hole"...another Disney movie

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Saturday, April 16, 2011 - 11:33 am:

Something I noticed after watching the first movie again was at the beginning, when Flynn was using a program to try and break into Encom and it was de-rezed by the MCP, that program's name was CLU, which is the same name Flynn used for the program we see in this movie that took over the grid.

Where was the tank John? I guess I missed it.

-End of Line

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Saturday, April 16, 2011 - 4:03 pm:

I noticed that too. It must have been CLU 2.

The tank appears very quickly. You have to watch for it. I can't remember exactly when or where I saw it...but it was definitely a tank
