Inglourious Basterds

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: War: Inglourious Basterds

Amazed that Luigi hasn't put up a board for this one yet (if you have Luigi, my apologies and feel free to move this to the proper board).

This is an amazing film from Tarantino. After the incredibly dull "Death Proof" QT has bounced right back into form. It may not have the all-out action of "Kill Bill Vol.1" but the fight sequences are great and the final climax of the movie is both amazing and harrowing at the same time.

Brad Pitt continues to impress as Lt. Aldo Raine. He clearly has a ball doing this (and his Italian is worthy of some of the finest comedic performances in recent memory- for only a few words he had the audience in stitches). Melanie Laurent as Shoshanne is also outstanding in her main role too.
But the absolute highlight is an Oscar worthy turn by Christoph Waltz as the slightly lunatic Col. Hans Landa. From his opening scene to his last he commands the screen with his wit, delivery and commitment to this tough role. He treads the line between serious and parody extremely well.
There are many great set pieces here and many long stretches of dialogue which- unlike "Death Proof"- all are heightening the tension. In the middle of the film is a scene set in a cellar bar which had people in the cinema absolutely riveted because they knew something was going to happen and the tension Tarantino created was almost unbearable. Also the lead-up to the film's climax (which I won't spoil here) is nothing short of brilliant.
One word of warning- Tarantino has thrown historical accuracy out the window- and he makes no apologies about it so don't go expecting a truthful account of the war. Also I suspect our dear friend Rona may object to a scene with a lady getting slightly tortured by Pitt's character (which is nothing compared to what he does to the male characters in this film).
All up this a worthy addition to the canon of Tarantino. I don't think it will top any Tarantino's fan's list but it should come d@mn near close...

I too thought Christoph Waltz was fantastic in this movie, easily my favorite character. I also think this movie is interesting because despite the title, the movie is more about Shoshanna than the Basterds, from what it seems to me anyway. The rest of the movie is more-or-less Tarantino-style but the ending alone is enough reason to see the movie. I read it somewhere but forgot, why are both words in the title spelled that way?

Very good if a bit gory in places, even by Tarantino's standards.

It takes a long time for the 2 main plot strands to come together, but it's worth it.

Did anyone notice that Landa orders a glass of milk for the girl, is that pure chance or a hint that he knows who she really is.

Good call on that one.
