I gotta admit, when I heard the concept for this remake, I didn't think too highly of it, but now I wonder---well, why didn't I? Maybe I was just biased because I grew up with the original. But this trailer looks pretty good. The choice of that song when the training begins was a good one, and moving the setting to Beijing, where the main character is an American, intensifies the effect of the underdog feeling out of place as a fish out of water.

I just hope they don't make it goofy because Jackie Chan is in it. I hope it's the heartwarming coming of age drama that the original was, which is why I'm putting it here in drama.

New theatrical trailer.

I liked it! It didn't have Fort Minor's "Remember the Name" as a partial theme as the first trailer did, but it revealed a bit more of the plot--no spoilers, in my opinion--but just enough to answer some of my questions, like the fact that that jacket bit, seen in the first trailer, is part of the teacher's incorporation of movements used in mundane activities into the training, and a couple of shots from the "final showdown", which gives an indication as to its setting. It also reinforces my hope that the film will be a serious drama, and not a goofy slapstick like some of Chan's other work. I just hope that they humanize his character a bit with flaws or a bit of tragedy, as they did with Mr. Miyagi in the original film. Hearing Joe Esposito's "You're the Best" in the background of one of the scenes was a nice homage, and I hope it's in the actual film, since it wasn't in the same scene in the first trailer.

Since this takes place in China rather than Japan, it is kung fu that the teacher teaches the kid, and not karate, but the trailer's page indicates that young Drew knows a little bit of karate (much as Daniel did at the beginning of the first film), perhaps in order to justify the title, with narrative irony.
