Hot Tub Time Machine

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: Hot Tub Time Machine

I saw this at a press screening last night. There was some funny moments, and a couple of very fetching, barely clothed females, but I wouldn't have paid $12 to see this. In addition, pretty much the entire plot, right down to specific subplots (the bell boy's arm, Jacob's father, getting back to the present, what's going to be waiting for them when they get back, what's going to happen to Lou), are pretty much telegraphed more than the plot of Avatar, and I didn't buy Lou's initial dedication to preserving the timeline. It's essentially a watered down Back to the Future with bare breasts and gross out humor centering on the usual bodily fluids.

One nit: The movie makes it clear that the present day sequences are set in 2010 (this is clear when the year is mentioned near the end of the film, when the guys prepare the hot tub to make the attempt to go back to the present), and that the past time period is 1986. That's 24 years. Jacob says after meeting his mother in the past that he'll be born about nine months after the events of Winterfest '86, which is the weekend event at which the guys are at in the past. That would make him 24. But in the very first scene that introduces Jacob, Adam mentions that Jacob is 20, not 24.

And I had thought that The Evil Bong (which sadly is a real movie) was a silly title for a movie.

How about that squirrel? Apparently, it gets from the California mountains to Cleveland in a day to break up Elway's touchdown pass. That thing can move.

It's essentially a watered down Back to the Future

And of course, Crispin Glover was in this movie (he played the bell hop who lost his arm, but had it reattached in the new time line).

This movie also had echoes of Quantum Leap, as that even though the guys appear to each other as their 2010 selves, everyone sees them as their 1986 selves. Also, when they look into a mirror, they see their 1986 selves.

Using that premise, Jake should have been invisible to the 1986 folks, as he did not yet exist.

I'm guessing Lou was Jake's dad in the original time line (he said he never knew who his father was)as well. Otherwise, he would be a different person when time was changed.

Just who was the mysterious character played by Chevy Chase? He seemed to know what was going on.

Yeah, this was basically a remake of Back To The Future, it even had a similar ending (the main characters lives are much better in the new time line than in the original). The difference is that the past in this case was a year I was alive in and remember (I turned 20 in 1986). God, I'm old!

The 2015 sequel
"Hot Tub Time Machine 2" wasn't as good as the first one
