I'm not really into romantic comedies. They often come across as contrived, unbelievable, corny, and just plain poorly written.

But something about the trailer for this one intrigued me. Maybe it's because I really like Mila Kunis, she's a hottie, and she was also in another rom-com that I had thought was okay, Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which was ironic, since it didn't get as good reviews as other Judd Apatow projects). While I was never really into the whole boy-band thing, I've been really impressed with the range of talent Justin Timberlake has displayed in his three hosting gigs on Saturday Night Live, in terms of his acting, his comedic ability, his ability to poke fun at himself, etc. Even the roles he's played in movies for which I've only seen trailers, like Alpha Dog and The Love Guru, were an indication to me that he's talented, and in general, both stars are just plain likeable.

So I went.

Aside from having to spend at least the first half of the movie telling the four %^&*@# behind me to stop talking, I really liked this movie.

The characters are likeable and fairly well-developed, including the supporting characters (in particular the family of Timberlake's character), the dialogue is well-written, the serious family moments are handled well, and while the film employs the basic cliched structure of rom-coms, in particular the obligatory they-break-up-at-some-point-then-she-takes-him-back-because-of-some-overture-by-him-in-a-public-place-at-the-end, the tendency of the characters to skewer those tropes, ala a rom-com version of Scream, makes it go down a bit easier.

Bottom line is, I didn't mind paying to see this film, and I'd like to see more films with Kunis and Timberlake in 'em.
