Battleship

I can't say that I'm thrilled to know that they're making movies based on board games, for crying out loud, but the trailer is mildly interesting.

Given director Peter Berg, star Liam Neesom (Phantom Menace) notwithstanding, and the fact that Rihanna, of all people, is in this, I'm curious to know if this will be as bad as it sounds.

Then again, given that the movies I'm most familiar with by screenwriters Erich Hoeber Jon Hoeber are Red and Whiteout--two acclaimed comic books whose film adaptations were not huge successes, with Whiteout in particular a box office bomb, perhaps it's every bit as bad as it seems, akin to a G.I. Joe on water.

I saw this on yahoo news and just had to laugh. Why couldn't TPTB just make another WWII movie, be it in the Pacific from the US pov or the Atlantic from the UK pov? Granted the article I read mentioned not alienating a country or culture but so what! I guarantee it would sell better if it's at least based on a true story then yet another alien movie. I agree that the trailer was mildly interesting, but I am betting the movie won't be much better than that.

It would hardly be the first movie based on a board game.

But at least the game Clue (or Cluedo, across the pond) has a cast of characters and a hint of a plot to work with. Even Witchboard acknowledged he supposed purpose of a Ouija board. The only thing the writers of this movie had to work with going in was the number and sizes of the ships in the patrol group.

What made the Clue movie work is that the characters were based on those of the game. Since battleship has no such characters, the premise doesn't work here.
