Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Superheroes: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Saturday, November 24, 2012 - 12:55 pm:

Release date is set to be April 4, 2014.

With Nick Fury, the Black Widow and Maria Hill included in the cast, it almost seems like Marvel's The Avengers 1.5.

Anthony Mackie will appear as Sam Wilson/The Falcon and Frank Grillo as Crossbones.

Here's a link for the film's name.

For the uninitiated, Winter Soldier was an identity that Cap's sidekick, Bucky, took on in the comics, after it was revealed that he did not die.

Also, here's a link for Anthony Mackie playing the Falcon.

Shot of the costume being worn by Chris Evans' stunt double on the set of "Captain America 2". It's the costume that Cap wore as "The Captain", an identity he assumed during the "Winter Soldier" storyline in the comics.

By Benn (Benn) on Saturday, October 05, 2013 - 1:42 am:

The "Winter Soldier" storyline that Ed Brubaker wrote? Uhhhhh, Steve Rogers was (presumed) dead when Bucky was revived and revealed to be the Winter Soldier. The Captain identity, I think, was during Mark Gruenwald's 1990s tenure on the character - when Rogers was fired (so to speak) by the U.S. government (or Rogers quit being a flunky for the government. I forget which.)

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, October 05, 2013 - 7:49 am:

Right. What was the name he used when he came back, though, when Bucky was still using the CA identity and Steve wore that costume? I forget.

By Benn (Benn) on Saturday, October 05, 2013 - 8:15 am:

Steve Rogers, the Super Soldier. And yeah, that is the uniform. Except the Super Soldier, who was then the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., did wear a mask.

Nice poster.

Even nicer trailer.

I thought the action looked good, and I'm hoping that having Cap in the present means that the writers are no longer limited by WWII history in creating an exciting action plot. I also thought the crisp, detailed photography looked good, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a certain veteran actor/director in new role in the film. The plot also looks intriguing, like they're essentially doing a Tom Clancy or Jason Bourne film with Captain America in it, which is fine by me.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, October 25, 2013 - 10:02 am:

I agree. Mixed with an Avenger's tie in with Fury, Black Widow, and now the Falcon, who looks like he can fly. I'm more psyched for this one then I am of Thor, but Thor looks good, too.
And hopefully that altered Captain America costume is just temporary and he returns to the updated classic version from The Avengers.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 - 8:40 am:

Oh, he'll definitely be sporting the classic one, Steve. It's not just that it's in the posters and other production stills I've linked to; the moviegoers wouldn't tolerate otherwise.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Saturday, November 02, 2013 - 7:47 am:

I really hope so-- it's just that in these days of toy marketing, we've seen the changes to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man be altered and keep the new movie versions of the costume.
And don't get me started on Iron Man's 20 or so suits of armour in 4 movies! :-)

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, November 02, 2013 - 4:56 pm:

42, as I recall. :-)

By Josh M (Joshm) on Sunday, November 03, 2013 - 3:53 am:

Seriously? I wonder if that was a deliberate reference.

Empire magazine cover feature.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, February 03, 2014 - 4:09 pm:

A great second trailer.

Too bad I'm seeing more of the redesigned Cap costume than I want to. It's reminding me of how they redesigned the costume into a Evel Kneivel-like costume in the first TV movie.
Why, why, why, WHY can't Hollywood keep their grubby revisionist costume designers off our classic heroes???!!!

No spoilers here.
I really, really liked this movie, and the reviews are right-- it's even better than Captain America - The First Avenger, which I also thought was great. Like Thor-The Dark World, it surpasses the first movie by leaps and bounds.
There's plenty of humor (Fury gets a bunch of good lines), but not enough to make the film too jokey.
Stan The Man has his usual cameo, and he even gets a funny line, for a change.
THIS is what a Captain America movie should be about-- lots of action, lots of characterization, numerous villains and allies, and a big dose of intrigue.
If you were kinda iffy about Captain America before this, this film will make you a fan.
Also, as per usual, there are TWO late scenes; one after about a minute of the ending credits, and the second after the last credits have rolled. The first appears to be connected with Captain America 3, while the second is for another movie (no spilers here! Sorry!)

I found this list at heromachine.com, which has picked it up from mightygodking.com. Lists are subjective, so you won't agree with every rating, as neither do I about the ranking, but MGK has created their Top 32 Marvel Movies List, from worst (# 32) to best (# 1), from 1998 onwards. (None of the TV movies are included-- these are trheatrical releases, only).
If you want to read their comments you can check them out at either site, but for space reasons I've only listed the titles.
Check out MGK's opinion of Number 1...

32. Man-Thing

31. Elektra

30. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

29. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

28. Punisher: War Zone

24. Hulk

23. The Amazing Spider-Man

22. X-Men: The Last Stand

20. Daredevil

19. The Wolverine

18. Iron Man 2

17. Blade II

16. The Punisher

15. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

14. The Incredible Hulk

Captain America: The First Avenger is better than the first two X-Men films, the first two Spider-Man films, the first and third Iron Man films and The Avengers????? Wow. Well, to each their own.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Thursday, April 17, 2014 - 1:28 pm:

Yeah, I totally agree with you, Luigi.
Of course, if you put all of us Nitpickers in a room we could all debate as to what order they should go in, but MGK has major differences from me, too.
I felt the first Ghost Rider movie was better than the second, I would place Fantastic Four-Rise of the Silver Surfer much higher than # 30, and I'm probably in the minority for liking Daredevil more than others around here.
Blade and The Punisher don't do anything for me, so I can't comment on movies I haven't, and will never, see.

Who knows...maybe mightygodking.com is run by Chris Evans!!!! :-)

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Sunday, May 18, 2014 - 10:29 pm:

This movie has been out for six weeks now I think and I just watched it in a nearly full theater! It's easy to see why, The Winter Solider is not just a good comic-book movie, but a good action/thriller movie as well. It would be difficult for me to rank this compared to other comic book movies so I'll just say it can hold its own with the better ones. Having said that; however, it wasn't without its nits:

SPOILERS!!

Steve's durability, for lack of a better term, in this flick was quite inconsistent. At times he appeared downright invulnerable, and others was injured by seemingly lesser means. There were also several occasions where he and/or others survived due to dumb luck or plot-required stupidity on the part of the bad guys; the attack on Nick Fury and the second encounter with Bucky for example.

One specific scene that I felt was a bit unnecessary was near the end when the three new Operation Insight helicarriers were ready to be launched and a techie refused to launch them. A standoff between SHIELD and Hydra soon commences and the head Hydra goon launches them without much issue. Grunts and techs don't do the same work or have the same knowledge, otherwise why have both? If it was a simple matter of pressing a couple buttons why couldn't the Hydra goon do that on his own and avoid the whole situation? If it required codes why didn't the tech do something productive like lock out the console? SHIELD is more paranoid than the FBI when Hoover was in charge. It's incredibly unlikely that Hydra could gain control of SHIELD so easily; particularly with Fury already suspecting something is going on.

I'm sure I've forgotten many things, but either way it was an entertaining film that future additions in the Marvel universe will have a tough time matching IMHO. On a different note, despite it being picked up for a second season, I don't see how Agents of SHIELD can continue after the events in this film. I was hoping for a cameo by Phil Coulson in TWS but it was not to be.

NANJAO The exact latitude and longitude of S.H.I.E.L.D's headquarters in Washington DC are shown on screen. In our world, those coordinates correspond to the unoccupied Theodore Roosevelt island in the Potomac river. The only building of note on the island is the Theodore Roosevelt Island Memorial. In the movie's world, that same island is shown with the large headquarters building covering virtually all of it, with the three vast launch bays for the new hightech helicarriers built under the adjacent river. Nice that the movie's creators bothered using real coordinates for that brief bit of on screen info.
