This 1988 miniseries is based on the novel of the same name, detailing the experiences of Hornet Squadron, an RAF fighter squadron, during the first year of World War 2.
I remember there was a bit of controversy over the use of Spitfires, as the units sent to France used Hurricanes. However, the production had to use Spitfires, as there were only 3 Hurricanes capable of flight at the time. Of these, one was in Canada, and the other 2 were operated as part of the Memorial Flight with the RAF, who placed strict restrictions on the amount of flying done by their historic aircraft. (A plan to use 70% scale mini-Hurricanes fell through, because the only available examples had flat-four engines!) In any case, the use of Spitfires made it easier to produce ground based replicas for the airfield scenes.
The miniseries is available on 2 disc DVD.
