Nitcentral's Top 100 Films

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: The Cutting Room Floor (The Movies Kitchen Sink): Lists, Cliches, Trends and Quirks: Nitcentral's Top 100 Films
By MikeC on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 2:12 pm:

This is a list of my personal Top 100 films. They are unconventional. They are in no order. I am not an "art-house" buff. I simply want to be entertained. There are a few "quirky" films that can be explained as holdovers from my childhood days. You also will notice a lot of modern films. This is because that I have not seen an extraordinary amount of the "classics". If I do get around to seeing "The Godfather", "The Grapes of Wrath", "The Bridge Over the River Kwai", then I might put them on here.

1. It's a Wonderful Life
2. Citizen Kane
3. The Star Wars Trilogy, with ROTJ my favorite

By Maj. Strasser on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 2:24 pm:

At the risk of belaboring the obvious...

HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY LEAVE OUT CASABLANCA!!!!

By MikeC on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 2:45 pm:

I have not seen "Casablanca". I know...I am film illiterate. As I said at the top, if there's a great film not on here, I probably haven't seen it, and don't want to presume that's it's great by principle.

By Fred C. Dobbs on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 2:52 pm:

Nobody leaves off "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"!

By MikeC on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 3:09 pm:

Haven't seen it. (I know...I need to get with the classics...it is interesting how many famous--and dead--characters visit this board)

BTW: Mr. Dobbs, I don't need no stinking badges! And Major Strasser, we are rounding up twice the usual number of suspects.

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 6:41 pm:

Amistad was a highly underrated film. I'm glad I'm not the only one who liked it.

By Jim Stark on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 8:02 pm:

YOU'RE TEARING ME APART by not including Rebel Without a Cause.

By norman on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 12:42 am:

Other Faves:

Fargo
Wings of Desire (miles better than "City of Angels")
E.T.
The Color Purple
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Muriel's Wedding
Heathers (My favorite of Teen-Angst Films, and beats "Jaw Breaker" by miles)
Gone With The Wind
Murder By Death
Mildred Pierce
Roots
Dr. Strangelove

By Hans Thielman on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 12:58 pm:

In rating films, I'm not certain how one can compare a film like "Schindler's List" to "Star Wars." While both are outstanding, I would have a hard time watching "Schindler" more than once. "Star Wars," on the other hand, is a film I have seen several times and would enjoy seeing again. For me anyway, a favorite film is one I want to watch and rewatch.

By Sam Spade on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 2:19 pm:

I don't see "The Maltese Falcon" here either.

By Sam Spade on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 2:20 pm:

I don't see "The Maltese Falcon" here either.

By Philip Marlowe on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 2:20 pm:

Double-posting are you? Just goes to show how incompetent you are, Spade!

By MikeC on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 2:33 pm:

These are films that entertained me or kept my interest. All the films that people suggest I have not seen, and many are not "good" films, just films that are funny to watch.

By dwmarch on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 4:02 pm:

Is this board for everyone to list their favorites? You don't expect me to come up with a list of a HUNDRED do you? I have lots of spare time but not THAT much. How about a top ten list instead?

(BTW, several of these are unsuitable for discussion on these boards beyond mention of the title!)

These aren't really in order except that Pulp Fiction is definitely number one.

1. Pulp Fiction
2. The Crow
3. The Prophecy
4: Star Trek: First Contact
5. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
6. The Professional
7. The Fifth Element
8. Aliens
9. Alien Resurrection
10. Independence Day

Now those are what I call movies!

By Punster on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 4:07 pm:

Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe: obviously his choices aren't the stuff that your dreams are made of!

dwmarch: you really haven't seen too many (classic) movies, have you?

By MikeC on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 6:04 pm:

Punster, I probably would really love "The Big Sleep" and "The Maltese Falcon"...if I see them. I did see the finale to "The Maltese Falcon", and Bogart is really good with that rat-a-tat dialogue (see "All Through the Night" for some good Bogart comedy).

Also, my choices have a few classics, quite a bit modern, and a lot of obscure.

By Punster on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 11:25 pm:

MikeC: that bit about "you haven't..." was aimed at dwmarch.

By dwmarch on Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 11:36 pm:

Yeah, I'm just a modern-day type of guy I guess. The oldest movies I've ever seen would be things like "To Kill A Mockingbird" which certainly was a good movie but not amongst my favorites. I haven't even seen any classics like "Gone With the Wind" or "Casablanca" or anything like that. But that's just me. I love movies but I just love *modern* movies for now.

By Angry mob leader on Thursday, April 01, 1999 - 11:21 pm:

Suspiciously few westerns. Let's lynch him, boys!

By MikeC on Friday, April 02, 1999 - 12:08 pm:

Westerns? Desperado and Unforgiven are westerns, and when I see "Blazing Saddles" this weekend, that will probably replace "Bean". I like the western genre, it's just that I haven't seen too many. "True Grit" was a good one, as was "El Dorado".

By Angry mob leader on Friday, April 02, 1999 - 2:08 pm:

Okay okay, let me rephrase - no Westerns older than seven years! Get the noose!

By John Cleese Fan on Saturday, April 03, 1999 - 1:27 pm:

Silverado was also a good western.

By MikeC on Saturday, April 03, 1999 - 2:56 pm:

"El Dorado" was fine at the beginning, slow at the end. And the horrible Chinese joke ruined the whole film. John Cleese was best at "Fawlty Towers", of which, I just saw the episode with the Germans. "True Grit" probably should replace something on the list, and if I updated the list (which I don't), "Blazing Saddles" will now make the list.

"Heddy Lamarr's footsteps!"
"Hedley!"

By Electron on Saturday, April 03, 1999 - 3:36 pm:

"My Name is Nobody" was also a great western (starring Henry Fonda).

By Angry mob leader on Saturday, April 03, 1999 - 3:53 pm:

Well I'd recommend you check out "Red River", "Rio Bravo", "High Noon", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", "Stagecoach"... the classics!

By Vic Fontaine on Sunday, April 04, 1999 - 2:13 pm:

I liked "Shane", myself, but I just a holodeck charater.

By MikeC on Sunday, April 04, 1999 - 3:44 pm:

Good idea. I'll have to check one or two of those out (El Dorado is a remake of Rio Bravo, with Robert Mitchum instead of Dean Martin, BTW).

By King Ghidrah on Monday, April 12, 1999 - 1:50 pm:

"Godzilla Vs. Gigan"?? "Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster" is easily the greatest Godzilla movie!

By Thurston Howell III on Monday, April 12, 1999 - 2:18 pm:

"Godzilla Vs. Gigan"? What, is the monster the Skipper's little buddy?

By Norma Desmond on Monday, April 12, 1999 - 2:24 pm:

I don't see my movie here either. You know the one - "Salome".

By Nate on Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 9:59 pm:

NATE DREDGES TOP TEN FAVORITE MOVIES:

10.THE MAN WHO SHOOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962)-- John Ford, the greatest of all western directors, directs this, the greatest of all western films.
The story of an eastern educated lawyer (James Stewart), who travels to the wild west, hopping to bring law and order to the untamed frontier. early in the film Stewart is attacked by local outlaw Liberty Valance (played by classic western bad-guy Lee Marvin), and is later rescued by a local rancher (John Wayne). As Stewart tries to rally the cowardly townsfolk against Valance, he and Wayne compete for the affections of a local waitress (Vera Miles). In the end Stewart gets the girl, but this is partly because she and the whole town think that he killed Liberty in a shoot-out. Infact Stewart himself believes this until it is reveled to him that in all the confusion, it was actually John Wayne who had shoot and killed the local bad-man. A fascinationg story of how legends were created in the old west, and some great performances by some of the genres greatest performers, earn Liberty the number ten spot on my list.

9.THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940)- Charlie Chaplin brings this brilliant satire on Fascism to life in the greatest performance of his carrer. Chaplin plays due roles, those of Adenoid Hynkel, the dictator and "Fuey" of Tomania, and a simple Jewish barber. The most symbolic scene is the dictators 'globe' scene. This is the best comady of the first half of the Century.

8.PATTON (1970)- George C. Scott's greatest performance. Scott is Patton. Karl Maldan is Omar Bradley.

7.TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)- Harper Lee's classic Novel is adapted to the screen in a superb manner. Gregory Peck is the embodyment of Integraty as Atticus Finch.

6.SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)- The happiest movie ever made.

5.DR.STRANGELOVE OR; HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1964)- Only Kubrick could have pulled this off. Peter Sellers is Amazing!

4.SERGENT YORK (1941)- This movie says so much! If you want to know about how I feel on War and Religone? Then see this movie.

3.MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939)- If only we could send him to Washington now!

2.LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (LA VITA E BELLA) (1998)- If you don't like this movie, then your a Nazi.

1.ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)- "No man is a failure who has friends"-Frank Capria.

By ScottN on Friday, May 21, 1999 - 9:04 am:

Nate,

You're right. "Patton" is almost always underrated on those "top 100" lists that the critics seem to put out. Scott (and Malden) did a brilliant job in this film.

Duck Soup showed up twice, as #s 19 and 31

By Murray Leeder on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 8:03 pm:

Oops! When I initially submitted it, I had Day of the Jackal listed twice too. Well, we'll keep it at 19, move everything else up one and add Rebel Without a Cause as #100.

By James on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 9:23 pm:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is #66 & # 77 also, that leaves room for Forrest Gump. :=)

By Murray Leeder on Saturday, May 22, 1999 - 11:14 pm:

Oops again! Sorry, not Gump... I liked it, of course, but 100 is a pretty low number. Hmm, what to add... maybe Laura... 12 Angry Men maybe deserves a presence... High Noon's not on here either... Murder My Sweet... East of Eden... The Invisible Man... Star Wars... The Last Temptation of Christ... Frankenstein... Five Easy Pieces... Close Encounters of the Third Kind... Mean Streets... The Adventures of Robin Hood... Tootsie... Duel... Platoon... The Last Emperor... aaaah, I'll decide later.

Any list where Return of the Jedi is listed over Forbidden Planet can't be trusted anyway.

By Mike Deeds on Thursday, May 27, 1999 - 6:41 am:

Murray Leeder, my problem with the Sci-Fi Entertainment list is Independence Day at #16. Personally, I don't think it should be on the list AT ALL (definitely on the list of WORST sci-fi films). How could anyone rank it above Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.-The Extraterrestrial?

Here is my list of the top 100+(plus) films that I have seen. I tried to narrow it down to 100 but I couldn't decide what to drop. This list is in alphabetical order. I thought about ranking them into categories (i.e. science fiction, action, drama, etc.) but decided not to. Just for the record, I think that the top sci-fi films are the Star Wars trilogy (with TESB being the best), 2001:A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and E.T.-The Extraterrestrial. The top two action films are Raiders of the Lost Ark and Die Hard.

Not a bad list.

By Murray Leeder on Friday, June 11, 1999 - 11:43 am:

A good list indeed - except for that I don't recall voting for The Stunt Man.

By Mike Deeds on Friday, June 11, 1999 - 12:24 pm:

Murray Leeder, you are right. I thought I saw it on your Sunday, May 23nd post. So, strike that one out!

By Mike Deeds on Friday, June 11, 1999 - 12:28 pm:

Murray Leeder, if you prefer Gandhi to E.T., do you realize that you left it OFF your Top 100 list?

By Murray Leeder on Friday, June 11, 1999 - 12:34 pm:

One word - oops. I should actually assemble a new list pretty soon. I've seen a few new movies I might consider adding, and a few of those have somehow faded in my memory.

By Wes Collins on Friday, July 23, 1999 - 11:04 am:

Here are my top ten in order.
10:Amadeus
9:12 Angry Men(The Old ONE!!)
8:Blade Runner
7:The Empirer Strikes Back
6:The Wizard of Oz
5:The Phantom Menace
4:Pee Wee's Big Adventure
3:The Garpes of Wrath
2:Bridge on the River Kwai
1:Lawrence of Arabia

By MikeC on Friday, July 23, 1999 - 12:10 pm:

I believe Vic Fontaine (the TV show character) likes "The Searchers" more than "Shane".

On my list (the top one), I will see how those films stack up after several months. This is a list of those that I would probably drop now.

1. Stand and Deliver
2. Possibly Aladdin, although I did love the musical numbers
3. Possibly The Magnificent Ambersons
4. Titanic
5. Tommy Boy
6. Probably Spy Hard
7. Probably Rush Hour
8. The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, only because the cartoons are better off seen in their full form
9. Possibly G.I. Joe
10. The Muppet Series should have been listed as one entry, with The Muppet Movie my fave
11. The Batman/Superman Movie
12. Possibly The Rocketeer
13. Possibly My Fellow Americans, although I did like it
14. Possibly The Night of the Generals (although the ending rocks)
15. Possibly Three Cases of Murder (although it is really good)
16. Bean
17. The Plot to Kill Hitler
18. Probably Lethal Weapon IV

Actually, this list is futile, as better movies are constantly seen by me. This just reflected what I truly liked at that time period (and what I could remember).

By B.F. on Sunday, July 25, 1999 - 9:02 pm:

In reference to Entertainment Weekly's Magazine's choice for top 100 sci-fi films. I don't think it should even be called a favs list anyway because Star Wars beats 2001: A Space Odyssey... that is soooooooooo wrong. And Star Trek VI isn't even very high on the list -- to me it's one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. Besides, any magazine that decides what all the top 100 films are are being ridiculous. HELLO TO THE MAGAZINES!!! -- there are 6 billion people on this rotating ball of water (and a sizeable chunk of rock) let them make their own decisions!! (provided they've seen any and all of these sci-fi films).

By Josh G. on Saturday, August 25, 2001 - 9:58 pm:

Mike Deeds, in addition to your comments about the Sci-fi list, any magazine that puts the abomination known as Dune on a list of "best" sci-fi films is not to be trusted.

Anyhow, here are my present favorites:

Princess Mononoke
The Star Wars Trilogy (especially Empire and Jedi)
Lawrence of Arabia
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
The Manchurian Candidate
Apocalypse Now
The Indiana Jones Trilogy
The Castle of Cagliostro
Dark City
The Wizard of Oz
Akira
The Usual Suspects
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Ghost in the Shell
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
It's A Wonderful Life
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Last of the Mohicans
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The rest of Miyazaki's films that I've seen (meaning Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro)

I can't think of anymore right now; I've seen way too many films, and yet I still have yet to watch such things as Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Gone with the Wind, Grave of the Fireflies, among others.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 - 12:37 am:

In no particular order, and including only films that weren't already mentioned above:

Twelve Angry Men (the 1959 Sidney Lumet version, not the crappy Showtime remake)
The Shawshank Redemption (Can't BELIEVE no one else mentioned it.)
Die Hard II
Mr. Holland's Opus
Toy Story
Alladin (Disney's animated version)
The Abyss (specifically, James Cameron's Director's Cut)
The Outsiders
Chasing Amy
Full Metal Jacket (I'm SHOCKED no one else mentioned it.)
Malcolm X (Ditto. I once told Denzel Washington when my company was doing a research screening of The Bone Collector in NJ that he shoulda gotten the Oscar for this movie. He responded jokingly, "Yeah, I should have!")
The Ten Commandments (Tritto.)
Seven
South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut
The Sixth Sense
The Others
Poltergeist
Alien
Boyz in the Hood
The Legend of Druken Master (and a bunch of other Jackie Chan movies.)
Thirteen Days
The Accused
Requiem for a Dream
Kramer vs. Kramer (These last three are not favorites in that I "like them" or love watching them, but rather were so sincere in the way they were made, and so powerful when I saw them that I might not want to do so again, [but in a way that's a compliment to them.])

My faves which were already mentioned:
the Star Trek II-IV trilogy
Star Trek VI
Star Trek First Contact
The Empire Strikes Back
Contact
Rocky
Rain Man
The Karate Kid
Crimson Tide
Braveheart
Die Hard
Clerks
Clue
The Lion King (though it was ripped off of Kimba the White Lion.)
Amistad
The Color Purple
Back to the Future trilogy
Aliens
True Lies
Terminator 2
The Silence of the Lambs
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Life is Beautiful (La Vita e' Bella) (You said it, Nate. BTW, "e'" means is. "e" means and. Just so you know. :)
The Indiana Jones triology
The Usual Suspects
As Good as It Gets
Titanic
The Airplane! movies
The Naked Gun movies
Miracle on 34th Street
The first three Lethal Weapon movies (particularly the first two. MikeC, if you liked IV, you might LOVE the first two!)

100 is an arbitrary number that takes too long to make but does not cover too many films. I've got break them up into categories and just stop when the quality drops off. The order is very general.

I'll start with an "easy" category. Comedies. My definition of "good" is it made me laugh out loud, consistently, even on second viewing. All else is irrelevant. Sorry stooge fans, no shorts. No cartoons either.

1 It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, World
2 Anything and everything Marx Brothers
3 Anything and everything Monty Python
4 Anything and everything Mel Brooks (except Robin Hood: Men in Tights.)
5 Anything and everything Woody Allen pre Annie Hall (non-inclusive)
6 Bean
7 Something about Mary
8 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (just seeing if anyone reads this.:))

Short list. Many good movies are not on it because at some point I stop laughing.

By JD on Saturday, December 15, 2001 - 10:16 pm:

Bill, are you saying that anything made by any of the ZAZ team DOESN'T belong on your list??? Not Airplane, not Top Secret!, not Naked Gun???

By William Berry on Sunday, December 16, 2001 - 2:46 am:

Who is ZAZ? Those were funny movies. I did not stop laughing, even if the bit was $tupid. I'd put them on on even though they must be forgettable. (Well, I forgot them.:))

By Butch Brookshier on Sunday, December 16, 2001 - 9:47 pm:

ZAZ is Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker. The guys who made those movies.

By TimB on Monday, December 17, 2001 - 2:16 pm:

One of my favorite movies which has not already been listed is a black-and-white Japanese film titled Hara Kiri. I saw this movie at a film festival about fifteen years ago, but I haven't heard about it since. It tells the story of two samurai (father and son) who fall on hard times after their patron is defeated. Eventually, the destitute son goes to a local noble and asks for help in committing hara kiri so he no longer must live in dishonor. The noble agrees. However, he has heard stories of other samurai who have used the same story to obtain charity from other nobles. The noble insists that the son perform hara kiri on himself immediately. Unfortunately, the son pawned the blade of his sword, and can only attempt to disembowel himself using a bamboo blade. Needless to say, its not a clean death. The son's story is recounted by the father, who has tracked down and killed all those who were responsible for his son's end.
This movie contains some of the best sword fight sequences I've ever seen on film, plus a great story. If anyone has seen it or knows if it is on video, I'd appreciate your input.

Comments? yeah. Annie Hall and Silence of the Lambs are conspicuously absent.

47. The Man Who Knew Too Little
Not the Bill Murray goofy spy flick? It was a cute little romp, but hardly deserves to be up there with Princess Bride and It's a Wonderful Life. I'd definitely substitute the far more complex and engaging Groundhog Day, also starring Murray. Probably his best work.

Sequels:
Toy Story 2: Definitely.
Attack of the Clones: Wha?? The prequels just don't have that magic that Lucas wielded back when he operated on much much lower budgets. The man is a master of SFX and incredible sights and sounds, but back when he had to film the Trench Run scenes in a parking lot, the movies seemed much more real.
Temple of Doom: Huh? Not the worst Indiana Jones outing...well, okay, it was the worst, but it was still a good flick. Just doesn't belong in the exact same rank with Raiders and Crusade.

17. Catch Me If You Can
Good movie. Very well-made. Fun. Not the all-time best.

74. Robin Hood (cartoon)
The Disney cartoon? With all the characters as animals? I must have watched it a thousand times between the ages of 6 and 16 but I've never even considered it in the context of the finest movies. Hmm.

Anyway, I'm getting a little tired so I'll have to take another look at this after a bit of sleep. Some very very good choices in that list, tho, Mike.

Dude, I've never seen Annie Hall or Silence of the Lambs. They're not my cup of tea in films.

Snick, your comments are, of course, true. In fact, I idiotically forgot Foreign Correspondent, so feel free to dump Robin Hood (which is on there because I also watched it a thousand times as a youth).

I haven't seen Groundhog Day (my bad), but I was pleasantly surprised by The Man Who Knew Too Little, and laugh for laugh, it gave me quite an enjoyable film experience.

Attack of the Clones and Temple of Doom are indeed weaker than the other films in their series. I refused to put Phantom Menace on, but Attack of the Clones, I felt, had a lot of scenes that were magical. I find the Indiana Jones series perpetually underrated (and Star Wars overrated), so I have no problem with putting Temple of Doom on there.

Catch Me If You Can has some serious flaws, but it was one of my more enjoyable movie experiences in recent years, and I've tried to put in some modern films.

I accidentally left off Identity, One-Hour Photo, and The In-Laws (original), but I have no idea what films to bump off.

What about Casablanca?

By MikeC on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 6:46 am:

(broken record kicks in)

Haven't seen it.

By ScottN on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 8:27 am:

Go rent it. Now. You won't be disappointed.

By MikeC on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 1:16 pm:

I really need to. I saw about half of it on TV once and it was really good but I had to leave or something so I didn't see the rest of it.

By Anonymous on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 3:58 pm:

You also forgot Gone with the Wind.

By MikeC on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 4:04 pm:

Read the 7:46 a.m. post.

(although I WANT to see Casablanca, I don't want to see Gone With the Wind--heresy I know.)

By MikeC on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 4:05 pm:

I also forgot The Music Man. And I would really like to put on one of the Star Trek movies too.

By Brian Webber on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 11:51 am:

Mike: I though GWTW was highly overrated. Casbablanca is a TRUE classic however. I also highly recomend Alfred Hithccock's Rebbecca if you haven't seen it already. AS for Attack of the Clones, I happen to agre with you. I thought it was a good movie, but fact that Phantom menace (and ROTJ before it) were sub-par (to put it nicely) hung around AOTC's neck like a friggin' albatross.

By Josh M on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 12:47 am:

While I did like AOTC I still don't think that it's quite as good as ESB or ROTJ. Though I think that it's almost as good.

By Josh M on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 12:50 am:

And I think that Forest Gump is a better movie than Catch Me If You Can. That's just me though.
