Trekkies

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Documentaries: Trekkies
By Lisa Shock on Thursday, June 10, 1999 - 7:18 pm:

I was wondering how everyone felt about this little documentary. I think they focused a bit much on some intensely obsessed fans, and didn't really do justice to those of us who can manage to pass for normals in public.

By James on Thursday, June 10, 1999 - 11:08 pm:

Right on the mark Lisa. I went in thinking it would be a positive look at fandom, but left the theatre feeling as if I just watched a freak show. Btw, the rest of the audience was in 100% agreement with me. I was the only one in the theatre.:=)

By Brian Webber on Sunday, June 13, 1999 - 1:43 pm:

This is already up in Now Playing you know.

By len on Monday, May 01, 2000 - 1:22 pm:

this movie was hilariou - it WAS a freak show in part BECAUSE there are some freaky people who are into Trek (a lot, even most, are normal- but focussing on them would make for a pretty boring movie).

By Trekker and proud of it on Monday, July 10, 2000 - 5:04 pm:

I watched it on PPV a while ago and I got really frustrated that it didn't show the "normal" fans -- I mean, the kind who aren't REALLY and TRULY obsessed with it, like every waking moment is spent thinking about ST. It just showed the freaky ones, and I can imagine some people who aren't Trekkies watching it and getting an even lesser view of us.
"Really, not every Trekker themes their office with Star Trek!"
"Uh-huh. Okay. Really."

Mac, what is your problem?

By Mac on Thursday, January 04, 2001 - 12:45 pm:

I'm really sick and tired of your crybaby whining. I have never seen anyone whose buttons are so easily pushed.

And as far as me getting "banned" from this message board: How typical. You want to shut anyone up who doesn't agree with you. You want to silence anyone whose opinion you cannot handle.

How freakin' pathetic.

What do you do, spend all day traveling message boards, creating alternate ID's and entangling yourself in st*pid arguments over nonsense like this? Talk about lost productivity.

In all seriousness, get a life. Or better yet, why don't you start your own message board especially for losers! Then you can ban anyone you want! You can even be the star loser! King Loser they'll call you!

By Wes Collins (Wcollins) on Thursday, January 04, 2001 - 2:23 pm:

Excuse me moron, what you fail to grasp is that we at Nitcentral, well most of us anyway, have different opinions about about everything. If you'd care too look around this board you'll find many friendly disagreements, and to be fair, some unhappy ones. I get the sense that a lot of your posts have been deleted. I'm unsure whether you were this nasty about things before, but the rules of this website are posted for all to see before much anything else on this board! I have had problems with them from time time personally, and have acted quite childish, as many will tell you. Now, however, I feel that those rules are here for a real reason, besides being a part of Phil Farrand's own morality. That they are ABSOLUTELY needed to maintain a stable online community. Perhaps you should take this into account. Oh and by the way, I know just as much about Star Trek as anyone does, and I don't live in my parents basement, or am completly geeky with pocket protector, and a calculator strapped to my belt. I have a life. Do you?

And in a moment of dramatic realization, an anagnorasis (sp?), if you will, Mac suddenly realizes that this is precisely what s/he is doing on this board! :o)

One must admit though, it was pretty nice for a guy with such a robust and full "life" to take the time out of his clearly busy schedule to write not only posts but that cute little "get a life" thing as well. Oh, if we could all be like Mac . . .

. . .what's that dripping? Ah, yes, sarcasm!

This was probably DeForest Kelley's last appearance on the big screen; the film was released around the time of his death.

By Alice on Saturday, June 15, 2002 - 3:11 am:

Probably way too late, but browsing these boards, I came to this. I've heard of it before, but has it ever been relased in the UK? I'd love to see it.

And Ghel...LOL!!!! In fact ROFL (if that's the correct term - I mean to get the hang of this eventually!)

By John A. Lang on Saturday, October 26, 2002 - 8:05 pm:

It's a good thing Brent Spiner is a laid back person. Or he might have gone to court by now and got a restraining order against that woman who founded "Spiner Femmes" who has all those Brent Spiner photos and who goes out to her porch & looks out to where Spiner lives. Some celebrities might consider this action---STALKING!

By Influx on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 10:29 pm:

After a long delay, I finally rented this film. Very entertaining. I thought Denise Crosby did a good job in respecting even some of the most far-out of fans.

The 14-year-old kid was amusing. I have never seen many young kids at an ST convention, so his perspective was refreshing. And to do the work he did on the (then crude) CGI!! It must have taken a lot of work and came out looking very nice! I was also amused that in his teenager way that he was appreciative that his mom sewed his self-designed uniforms, but a little embarassed that they were not "perfect", apologizing for them as a "prototype". I thought the design was neat, but obviously homemade... but hey, it's your MOM dude! Nice that you gave her props anyway.

One thing that really bugged me was the gal working in the print shop who insisted on being called "Commander". OK, this was the one on who showed up on jury duty wearing a Star Trek uniform. I don't really care about that, or even wearing an ST uniform at work. But, since I have served in the military for four Proud years, she better •••• well not expect me to call her "Commander" on a regular basis unless she has earned that rank -- and I don't mean by playing role-playing games. No, you're just Becky, as far as I'm concerned...

I've been saving up for my big "Trekkie" rant, and may post it in the next couple days or so. This was fueled by having just read Wil Wheaton's Dancing Barefoot, the favorite short story is "The Saga of Spongebob Vegaspants", or, "What happened when I met William F***ing Shatner". No matter what you think of his character, Wil is a fine writer and I recommend his weblog and books.

By unoman on Monday, July 03, 2006 - 6:03 pm:

anybody see the sequel -- Trekkies 2?
it was ok. don't think it was as entertaining as the first one. And it seemed as if Denise Crosby was a little bored .

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, July 04, 2006 - 10:13 am:

I want to, but my local video store doesn't carry it.

By Andre Reichenbacher (Amr) on Saturday, August 31, 2013 - 12:16 am:

I didn't like this or it's sequel. The people in it are what the world still think we are all like, and I really don't want to be pigeonholed into that particular stereotype. I'm sure none of you here do either.

Somebody here once suggested that I not say the things I was saying about what I didn't like about Bermaga Trek, as I would be perceived by the non-fans of the world as the way that we all are. Obviously that isn't the case. And the people in these two films are NOT the way regular Trekfans are, I'm sure of it. I know for a fact that I am *nothing* like those people!

Another thing I disliked, as I've written here elsewhere, is that the producers went out of their way to feature and showcase the really freaky, fanatical, and obsessive fans of the franchise. I am convinced that the average fan is not that out there and all incredibly weird and strange. You all know what I'm saying?

Well, that's about all I have to say. Now I'm going to watch "Trek Nation". I've heard good things about it. Jolan Tru!
