Tarzan

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Animation: Disney Films: Tarzan

Yes! Yes! Yes!
It's here! A board on the best Disney movie!

To start us off!

Phil Collins, in my opinion, did an excellent job on the music. By the time I finally went to see the film, I knew all the songs!

1. Tarzan's parents, The Greystones, escaped from a burning ship. To start with, how come no one else survived off the ship? It's not like they could have been on there by themselves, it's too big of a ship to control.

2. When Kala first went into the Greystone's house, there was furniture, clothes, clocks, doors with metal hinges, cupboards, chests of drawers... if they escaped from a burning ship in a dingy boat where did all this stuff come from? It would have been possible for some of the items to wash ashore, but the ship was pretty far out, and the heavy items such as the furniture would have sunk!

3. When Kala was singing 'You'll be in my heart' it shows other animals around her, and there are some ring-tailed Lemurs in a tree. I'm wondering how they managed to be in Africa, considering that Lemurs are native only to Madagascar.

4. Why did Tarzan wear a loincloth? In the book, he was naked until he was about 18, when he stole a loincloth from a black tribesman he killed. In this book there were no black tribesmen, and he wore it when he was younger. He didn't know he was human and that humans wear clothes, and his mother kept on saying that he was one of them, so why would she set out to make him different? And how did he get dreadlocks like that?

5. Why was a Mandarin leading a group of baboons?

6. When Clayton was fighting Tarzan, he fired three shots, one after the other. That would not be possible with a gun that needs to be reloaded after two.

7. Why would Jane wear something as impractible as that yellow dress in the jungle? She knew what to expect there, clearly!

8. When Tantor was swimming under the water to the ship, he would be able to breath through his trunk, but how would Terk be able to breath? And how did Tantor climb onto the ship?

9. Not really a nit, but I'm sure everybody who has seen this movie spotted Mrs. Potts and Chip from 'Beauty and the Beast'!

I need to go and lie down after that.

Right on!

10. By the middle of the film, Tarzan seems fully mature for a Caucasian human male. Why does he have no facial hair? And come to think of it, no body hair whatsoever?

11. Jane wears purple eyeshadow. Assuming this film is set in 1915 (more or less, judging by the costumes and the publication date of the original novel), this poses a problem. In 1915, the only ladies who painted their faces were trollops of ill repute. Any why would anyone in any time bother putting on eyeshadow during a jungle safari?

12. While the apes are trashing the camp, one of the things in clear evidence is an extensive bubbling chemistry set. Why does one need a chemistry set on a jungle safari? And why oh why does one leave burners on under flasks of chemicals without anyone to watch them?

Well you know women. I don't mean that as a sexist statement BTW. It's just that there are a lot of woman who are so insecure that they refuse to even go outside without makeup.

As for the in the book he was naked until he was 18. Obviously for decency reasons they gave him a loincloth, I really don't want to see a naked guy swinging through trees and such no thank you.

In the book, he removed his body hair to show he is different from Gorillas. He seemed much more eager to embrace humanity in the book!

Also, I think they totally wrecked the character of Clayton! I mean, would it have been that difficult to give him a different name?

Given the seriousness of the events at the beginning of the film, Phil Collins pop music seemed innappropriate, but I guess they didn't want to traumatize the kiddies, by using serious music.

Glenn Close is the voice of Kala here, but didn't Glenn Close also do the voice of Jane in the film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan of the Apes? (Apparently Andi McDowell's voice was too southern so they dubbed in another actress' voice.)

So, did Terk grow up in the New York section of the African jungle?

Somehow the elephants know that piranhas are in South America. However, the Great Apes know nothing about Humans, even though Humans live a lot closer.

So why wasn't the leopard anthropomorphic just like the friendly animals?

Anyone else think that Jane had a canine-like profile?

So what was the point of the Trashin' The Camp song? Telling the kiddies that it's okay to vandalize people's property as long as you do it musically?

Did anyone see 'Mrs. Potts' & 'Chip' after Trashin' The Camp? (Play Taps here)

Anyone else really hoping that Clayton would blow away Terk? (*Bang!* Bang!* "And here's one for your lousy talk show!" *Bang!*)

It really struck me when Clayton was telling Tarzan that Jane would stay if she saw the Gorillas. Clayton is Captain Hook. The scene reminded me of when Hook tricked Tinker Bell into revealing the location of the Lost Boys' treehouse.

While the periscope gag was cute, how did Tantor see the boat leaving since elephants can't really see through their trunks? Did he smell them leaving?

LOL when the end credits showed Professor Porter swinging through the trees, I believe, in a loincloth.

Multi-midichlorians: Tarzan's parents are the Greystokes, not Greystones. ("Greystones, meet the Greystones, your modern lost jungle family...")

I believe in the book the ship was attacked by pirates.

Of course, lots of stuff from the books was left out.
Film Tarzan apparently didn't know about his parents' treehouse & didn't learn to read.
He didn't rescue a Frenchman & learn to speak French.
Clayton Greystoke didn't marry Jane.

I'm not one to excuse Disney of promoting fornication, or anything, but would it have killed them to have the ship captain at the end offically marry Tarzan and Jane? It is a kids' show, after all...

I meant "accuse Disney"

Actually, the British were notorious for overdressing in situations were they should have worn a lot less.

Elephants are obsessed with death. And they have been in contact with humans longer. All that would be required is for one brittish hunter to mention it on safari, and they could tell everyone.

Actually Tarzan's parents were the Claytons. His grandfather was John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, a title Tarzan reclaimed after his cousin William (the movie's Clayton) inherited it when John Jr. and Alice were lost and presumed dead without issue.
