(don't say I didn't warn you)
We find out later in the series that there mothers were the original test pilots for the eva's and that what is left of there being now resides inside the eva's. For instance, Shinji's mom's spirit resides within Eva-01. This was after they achieved 400% synch rate with tehre evas and fused into one being.
All the people in Shinji's class are really prospective pilots for the evas.

Oh, cool! So basically they choose whoever 's mom piloted the Eva last?
Thanks,.

No, not so much the mother that piloted best but the one's that are most likely to fulfill the predictions set in the Dead Sea Scrolls and outlined by Keel Lorenz, head of Seele.
Shinji's mother did achieve a 400% synch rate with unit 01 and she remained in this state, allowing Shinji to later be able to synch with it and pilot it with more ease/reliability than the other pilots. The success of this melding also allowed Unit 01 to act with some autonomy (Berserker and any independent act to protect Shinji).
Asuka's mother returned to her physical body after her time in the Unit 02 and was driven insane by the process. This allowed Asuka to be fairly successful with her piloting of Unit 02 though Asuka's deeper internal troubles brought about problems with operation. In End of Evangelion though, Asuka realizes that her mother's spirit is present with her and this enables her to recover long enough to battle with the EVA Production Series.
Rei has no mother. The spirit that was used in Unit 00 is most likely that of Ritsuko's mother. She was involved in the testing of unit 00 and developed a very serious love/hate for Cmdr. Ikari. This showed in Unit 00 by it's repeated attempts to kill Cmdr. Ikari as well as Rei, though it could not refuse to synch as Rei, like Kaouru (sp) later in the series, is partially made of Angel material, and that forces an EVA to synch with it's pilot.

Well... Up until now, any postings I have made have been based strictly on memory. And not necessarily the most recent memory, at that. However, I feal it is my duty as your friendly moderator to change all of that. I shall watch the episodes and make notes as I do so! And so, here I start with the first two episodes.
Episode 1:
I'm sure many of you may have your theories, but it is never really explained why Shinji has that vision of Rei early on in the episode. (It clearly can't be the real Rei. She's at NERV HQ, and rather heavily bandaged at the moment.) I suppose this could be called the first of a plethora of unexplained mysteries of Evangelion. (But hey... that's half the fun! Trying to figure all of this smeg out! ^_^)
It's hard to tell for sure, but the damage to Misato's Renault Alpine seems to disappear and reappear a few times, and the degree of damage also seems to fluctuate.
Misato's earrings change after the commercial break!
Ritsuko has black eyebrows. Why do I mention this? Simple. In the opening animation she had yellow eyebrows. (And no, we're not going to do any tests to see if she's a real blonde. Save those for Major Houlihan.)
When Ritsuko first meets up with Misato and Shinji, under her lab coat she wears a one piece bathing suit. The next scene in which we see Ritsuko clearly, she is wearing normal clothes under her lab coat. I doubt she would have had opportunity to change... Of course, Shinji was so wrapped up in the manual he was reading, that she could have changed on-route and he probably wouldn't have noticed!
I find it somewhat amusing that the English dub refers to an "Oni -- a Japanese devil," when the Japanese language version makes no such reference to an Oni. (I'm not saying I expect the dub to be the same as the subtitled version... but I just think it's funny that there'd be a Japanese cultural reference in the dub that was not present in the original!)
The umbilical bridge that Shinji was on seemed to be connected to the Eva's arm restraints. The bolts on these particular restraints went into the Eva's shoulder. How did the right arm break free without destroying the bridge? The entire arm must have moved, as the elbow was clearly seen raised to shoulder level. Also, I find it hard to believe that the wall the right arm was embedded in didn't suffer major visible damage.
How do Shinji's vocal cords work when he is immersed in LCL? If I remember correctly from The Abyss, a film that seemed in most areas to try and be scientifically accurate whenever possible, fluid breathing would prevent speech. Of course, things would get tedious rather quickly if Eva pilots always had to type their messages!
And lastly, the English dub previews use different music then the original Japanese ones. (Interestingly, the Spanish dub uses the same music as the English dub, and the French dub uses the same as the Japanese.)
Episode 2:
The Japanese (much like the Bajorans) place their family name first, given name last. Therefore, Misato's name would be given as Katsuragi Misato. (Unless, of course, you listen to the dub! ^_^) So why does the name plate on her front door say, "M. Katsuragi"?
********SPOILER********
Of course, we later learn that the Evas are basically giant humanoids, and that their armor is meant as a means of control as much as it is a means of protection. Why, then, would Unit 01 take the effort to repair the armor on its arm? Shouldn't it just need to repair the internal bone?
Also, where did it get the physical material to repair the armor? It seemed to just magically appear. The next time we see similar repairs spontaneously done by Unit 01 (incidentally, the next time Unit 01 goes into such an all out berserker rage) it only repairs it's organic components (and not the armor) and to perform these repairs it takes some physical mater from an Angel.
To nitpick my nit... I just happened to be watching some Eva tonight for non-nitpicking purposes (just picked up DVD 5 today) and noticed a berserker incident I had forgotten about that takes place between this one and the other one I mentioned. --Matt, 1 April 2000
**********END OF SPOILER**********
And speaking of the break in the armor... (If you skipped the spoiler, there was talk of a break in the armor. Of course, you're probably smart enough to figure that out on your own. I'll stop this silly little tangent and get back to the point, now. Sorry.) Where was I?
Oh, yes. Speaking of the break in the armor, the edges of the break are awfully straight, aren't they?
Well, that's all for now. See you soon with the next two episodes! And I will not provide fan service!
I wonder if Misato drives a company car (read that: NERV upgraded). It was drivable even though it was thrown quite far after the N2 mine went off.
As for Misato's worrying about payments... she may still have to pay for the car and maintenance, even with NERV's upgrades.
Oh, I just noticed something else...
When we first meet Ritsuko, she was swimming in the purple stuff that they keep the EVA in. The only thing is, the EVA was undergoing refrigeration. Presumabily that is what the fluid is for. Wouldn't that make it really, really cold?
About the reference to the Oni, aren't they already speaking Japanese? (they configure the EVA to accept Japanese commands during the activation sequence, after all) So why does anyone need to say that it's Japanese?
To answer your question about Japanese, just because they're speaking the language doesn't mean that they would know what the word means.
True, but a Japanese person in Japan refering to it as "A Japanese devil" just sounds a little funny. It's kind of like an American in America refering to Abraham Lincon as "an American President": wouldn't it be normal to just say "President" as assume that the "American" part is understood? If the person was talking about the president of some other country, THEN it would be nessicary to say what country. You'd think Ritsuko would just explain that an Oni is "a devil".
Ritsuko has black eyebrows. Why do I mention this? Simple. In the opening animation she had yellow eyebrows. (And no, we're not going to do any tests to see if she's a real blonde. Save those for Major Houlihan.)
Must... Obey... Moderaitor... Mustn't... Point out... Dark haird picks of Ritsuko... In episode 21... ...Aw darn it!
