Death / Rebirth

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Genesis 0:14 (Evangelion Films): Death / Rebirth
The first Evangelion film begins with a retelling of the events of the television series, and then begins the chronical of an alternate ending to replace episodes 25 and 26.

(I have seen the films, but only once, so if anyone out there could e-mail me a brief synopsis of them, I'd be most greatful. You can reach me at matanian@nitcentral.com.)

ADVFilms And All ADV Affiliates... I Am SOOOOOOOOO Looking Forward To The Movies!!! ^_^

By Matt Atanian on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 10:37 pm:

Well... Actually the films are being brought to us by Manga Entertainment and not ADV. But if you are a fan of the dub, fear not! Manga got most (or all) of ADV's dub cast. For once, dub fans are not getting screwed over when more then one company gets the licence to different parts of the same series.

They Better! I Want Tiffany Grant(Asuka Langley Sohryu), Spike Spenser(?) (Shinji Ikari) And Amanda Winn Lee (Rei Ayanami,My Personal Favorite Anime Character!! ^_~) To Be The Voice Talents!!
Oh And Them Other Peeps Like Misato, Ritsuko, And Gendou And etc... ^_^

By Matt Atanian on Monday, May 07, 2001 - 10:34 am:

Well, as I said, it's "most or all." If it is only most, I don't know yet which ones aren't included. I am pretty sure that Tiffany Grant is. (She called me baka once... In person! ^_^) I'd be very surprised if Spike wasn't involved, although I don't know for certian. And since Amanda Winn Lee is directing the dub, I would be most supremely surprised if she didn't provide Rei's vocals, as well.

As for the others... Again, I have heard absoloutely nothing as to who (if anyone) this "most" might leave out... But I do seem to recall hearing from someone (probably 579 times removed from any credible sources) that Gendo and Fuyutski might be new voices.

As for why any voices might need replacing, it would probably be the choice of the actor. (Again, this is just my speculation.) If Manga is going to be nice and seek out some of the dub cast, why not all of it?

Just out of interest, I thought I'd mention that while they are still coming, the movies have been pushed back some. The VHS versions are coming sometime in January or February of 2002, and the DVD versions a few months afterwards, if I recall correctly.

And an interesting follow-up to the Tiffany Grant story... (She called me baka once...) I had opportunity to meet her again this year, and although I am sure she didn't recall me from our first brief meeting in '99, I relayed the baka story to her, and it brought a slight smile to her face... ^_^

Just as a point of interest...

I've yet to see it for myself, but I hear that there is a very big nit in Manga's upcoming release of this film.

Apparently, Rebirth will not be included. Instead, it seems that Manga simply took the first thirty minutes of End of Evangelion and sandwiched it between the credits for Rebirth.

Now, Rebirth and the first thirty minutes of EOE are almost identical, mind you... but there ARE differences. There are some very minor differences in some of the animation, the timing is apparently slightly different with some of the dialogue (although the same things are being said) and the music is quite different. (For the most part, Rebirth reuses music from the TV series, while EOE has new music.)

Many have speculated that this was a cost and time saving measure, saving Manga the trouble of having to dub two almost identical features. (One wonders what they've been doing, taking over two years to get this disc ready, if they have to save time using such drastic means.) In any case, the big nit is right on the cover of the disc where it says, "Death and Rebirth." After all, that is not what this disc is. It is, "Death and The First Half-Hour of End of Evangelion."

Those who know anything about the reputations that various U.S. anime distributors have will know that this is yet another sad example of Manga dropping the ball... Sad, indeed.

Oh... one final note. I also hear that the trailer included on this disc for End of Evangelion contains MASSIVE spoilers for EOE. So watch it at your own risk.
