Worth Several Cities:
Season 5, Episode 2.
Guest stars Ron Rifkin, Jon Huertas and Francis Jue.
Huertas had played Detective Esposito in Castle but he is on the opposite side of the law in this Elementary episode.
Jue played Chinese Foreign Minister Chen in Madam Secretary and in this Elementary episode he plays another official of the Chinese Government.
Very good episode in which the Imperial Jade Seal of China got linked to a murder.
Also not bad Joan tracking Shinwell’s daughter.

Elementary has been renewed for a sixth season.

Render and Then Seize Her:
Season 5, Episode 3.
Not bad episode in which the murder of a man that ultimately leads to the investigation of the kidnap of a woman whose kidnap was faked by the woman herself.
The other storyline between Gregson and Paige really did not interest me at all.

Way behind the rest of the world, but the last episode of Season 1 aired on Freeview in the UK this last Monday.

I've enjoyed the first season and found it entertaining as a detective series, but I still don't see the characters as anywhere close to the canonical characters. This version of Sherlock doesn't seem nearly as smart as any of the versions in other series or films, and indeed far too frequently he makes misjudgements or misdeductions before finally working out the truth. And Joan simply isn't anywhere near close to earlier versions of Watson, plus she's boring as hell IMO and has shown little character development since the series started.

The chemistry between the pair isn't strong enough, I feel. They clearly respect each other but there's no sense of them genuinely liking and feeling friendship towards each other, whereas all earlier versions of Holmes and Watson have shown them as close friends, so this feels uncomfortable. Maybe they'll develop a better friendship as the series continues, but I would have expected more by the end of the first season. There are nice little moments, like the name which Sherlock gave to the new bee variety, but all in all I find it much easier to treat this series simply as a detective show and not as a new version of the Doyle stories. There are far too many episodes where, at the end, I'm saying out loud, "That was good, but he's simply not Sherlock Holmes, and she’s not even close to being John Watson!"

That said, when they do throw in a canonical name or a spoken phrase from the canon, it's very pleasing.

The last two episodes were very clever and I'm annoyed that I had been spoilered about the [SPOILER whited out: highlight to read] Adler/Moriarty surprise long before it happened. It'll be interesting to see whether Moriarty returns in future seasons. And certainly this series treated Adler with a lot more respect than the Sherlock series did. In fact, both she and Joan are much better characters than any of women in Sherlock.

I'm actually more invested in the background characters than the mains. I like Gregson and Bell very much and hope we see more of Ms Hudson. Also I'm looking forward to the arrival of two more canonical characters early in Season 2.

I've no idea when Season 2 will be aired in the UK. So far I'm not anywhere near devoted enough to the series that I'm at all tempted to spend over £80 buying the next 4 seasons.

Elementary got referenced in The Mindy Project 4.17 Mindy Lahiri Is DTF when Jody holds an Elementary viewing party at his place.
Elementary on Jody’s TV is briefly seen during this party.

Ill Tidings:
Season 5, Episode 6.
Intriguing case with that of a mass murder at a restaurant by means of poison from snake venom.
Interesting how murder by snake venom turns out to be part of a plan for an art heist.
Funny when Joan was near a snake and Sherlock looking in his phone to find a solution for this. We don’t get to see what this solution was as it cuts to a break and the next we see of her she is fine and out of harm’s way with no explanation of how she got out of that snake situation.

How was it done, was the venom put in the food? In that case it wouldn't work, snake venom is not dangerous when simply ingested, it has to enter the blood stream.

Yeah it was put into the food.

Ooh, shame on the writers for not doing their research.

Pick Your Poison:
Season 5, Episode 10.
Joan has her DEA number stolen by a fellow doctor for the purpose of peddling drugs.
The imposter was soon found dead along with the mother of a patient.
Quite fascinating what develop from there and the truth of why they were killed.

Rekt in Real Life:
Season 5, Episode 14.
Guest stars Christine Taylor and Kathy Najimy.
Enjoyable case about a former professional game player who got murdered during a live video stream.
Also not bad the other plot of Shinwell helping his daughter after she reached out to him for the first time in years.
Unfortunately afterwards the daughter has no interest in beginning any new relations with her father.
Pretty Woman gets referenced here and I watched this episode on November 28 2017 which is coincidentally Karen Gillan’s birthday and she had played the Julia Roberts character in a parody of Pretty Woman 2 (a non-existent sequel) for The Kevin Bishop Show.

Dead Man’s Tale:
Season 5, Episode 18.
The episode title refers to a case that connects with pirates.
Not bad case which culminates with the murderer being shown a clip of Gene Wilder in The Producers in the interview room.
I don’t know if anyone from the cast and crew was aware when they showed that clip of Wilder in The Producers but one of his other movies is The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother in which starred as the said smarter brother Sigerson.
Meanwhile Sherlock and Joan discovered that Shinwell had gotten away with an unsolved murder which makes him a villain of the series.
Thrilling ending to the episode with Shinwell literally kicking Sherlock in the curb.

Hurt Me, Hurt You:
Season 5 finale.
Good handling of the season story arc with SBK.
Fascinating when Sherlock’s place was on fire and then the season ends on a cliffhanger with him going through an MRI.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Friday, February 16, 2018 - 5:59 pm:

Elementary season 6 will make its world debut on April 30 2018.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Sunday, June 10, 2018 - 5:21 am:

An Infinite Capacity For Taking Pains:
Season 6 opener.
Fascinating case about sex tapes and how it led to murders.
Very very intriguing after Michael finished his call to Sherlock that he was about to bury a dead woman!

Meanwhile Elementary has been renewed for a seventh season.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Sunday, August 05, 2018 - 9:48 pm:

Once You've Ruled Out God:
Season 6, Episode 2.
Actually I don’t on what it says in the episode title.
Sad about Joan losing her father.
Fascinating episode in which the threat of the use of plutonium was used to mask a robbery.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Monday, November 05, 2018 - 8:06 am:

How to Get a Head:
Season 6, Episode 15.
Unsurprising that the episode title was in reference to someone’s head remove from his body.
Not bad case and this is tied with the search with Marcus’ replacement.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Sunday, October 20, 2019 - 7:58 am:

Gutshot:
Season 7, Episode 2.
Sherlock and Joan return to the States to investigate Gregson' shooting.
I should have guess that the entire final season will not be spent with them in London and with this the second episode of the final season being the time to bring them home.
Not bad this investigation and when it was over it should not have been surprising that Sherlock decided to turn himself in at the end.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 - 7:22 am:

Red Light, Green Light:
Season 7, Episode 4.
Intriguing case about an accident caused by confusing traffic lights but was it really an accident.
Plus also intriguing of how this episode by what was said at that prison.
