The Adventures of Shirley Holmes

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Sherlock Holmes: The Adventures of Shirley Holmes

At Keith's request, I'm moving the discussion here.

This is the Canadian children's series with the great-grand-niece of Sherlock Holmes whose arch-enemy is a girl called Molly Hardy, an assumed descendant of Professor Moriarty.

They cancelled it in the end because Shirley was um blooming a bit too outwards in the chest to be a kid detective anymore and it would have fundamentally changed the series had it continued.

As i said to Keith, Moriarty as a girl just doesn't work. Things are different when the character is a teenage girl rather than an adult man.

For that matter, I don't think Moriarty would have worked as a teenage boy either. On the other hand an adult woman as Moriarty could work if you use the original story as a basis.

It sounds to me like Molly Hardy was a recurring antagonist rather than Doyle's "only appeared in one story because he had others do the dirty work for him" antagonist.

Recurring antagonists can be fun, but Moriarty was a "spider in his web" type and not the sort who would have a lot of scenes with hero.

Admittedly movies/TV and other such spinoffs have tended to turn Moriarty into more of Lex Luther to Sherlock's Superman. *shrug*

Sounds interesting - I will have to look it up!

The Case Of The Burning Building:
Series opener.
Shirley Holmes is the great-great-niece of the famous Sherlock Holmes and this is her first case and she is a schoolgirl.
Her first case is about a burning building and Bo Sawchuck, an ex-gang member and who would become her Watson is the suspect.
Enjoyable case to showing Shirley's investigative skills and it guest stars Ryan Gosling as an antagonist.

The Case Of The Precious Cargo:
Season 1, Episode 4.
Fascinating case of what the said precious cargo and that is children.
Not bad on how it gets solved.

The Case of the Maestro's Ghost:
Season 1, Episode 7.
Intriguing about the case with the Maestro's Ghost but ultimately discovered by Shirley to be a deception.

The Case of the King of Hearts:
Season 1, Episode 9.
Not a bad episode which is about keeping Ms. Stratmann as principal and not wanting her would-be successor.

The Case of the Cunning Coyote:
Antepenultimate episode of season 1.
Not bad case as Shirley investigates the disappearance of a box of two-hundred year bones and how the said cunning coyote came into this.

The Case of the Babyfingers:
Season 2, Episode 3.

The said Babyfingers is the name of a six-year old pickpocket and not bad what went on with this case about Babyfingers.

Not bad how everything worked out with Babyfingers having to say goodbye to crime.

The Case of the Rising Moon:
Season 2, Episode 5.

Despite the name this episode has nothing to do with werewolves.

Interesting case about a new student at Sussex Academy and what Rising Moon truly means and what a mistake Shirley unwittingly made that escalated the situation at hand.

The Case of the Exploding Puppet:
Season 2, Episode 6.
Not bad case about the Happy Valley Show with puppets as sabotage goes on.
The culprit is ultimately revealed and what an interesting reason for what this person did to the show.
Coincidentally saw this episode not long after the Doctor Who episode The Giggle which also had a puppet show but no puppets exploded!
