The Adventure of the Copper Beeches

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Sherlock Holmes: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
PLOT SUMMARY:Governess Violet Hunter has secured herself a very strange post as the charge of Jephro Rucastle's son. For some reason, Rucastle has insisted that she cut her hair short and wear at all times a dress that is a certain shade of blue. When she comes to Holmes with this puzzling situation, he senses great danger in it all . . .

Much has been made of Holmes's assertion to Violet that the position is 'not one I would like to see a sister of mine apply for.' The phantom sisters - starting with Violet herself - are legion.

On the other hand, at least one contributor to the Annotated Sherlock Holmes interpret's Violet's behaviour toward Holmes as decidedly un-sisterly, and suggest she was deliberately throwing out all those extraneous details about her accomplishments, hair etc. in order to, um, impress him.
