I love this story. For sheer dramatic tension, I think it even surpasses 'The Speckled Band'. Certainly it features some of the most memorable touches in all the Canon, including a giggling evil mastermind and his starving victim with his face hidden in sticking-plaster.

Plus of course we get to meet the one and only Mycroft Holmes, a memorable character in his own right!
