Is it just me or is this a bad story to finish with? I thought it was quite poor compared to Conan-Doyle`s other stories.

Well, it's only last in the internal chronology of the stories - the twelve casebook stories all appeared after this. "Shoscombe Old Place" was the last story by Doyle to appear in print.

Yes, I know, but this is still the final story in terms of the narrative, which is what I meant.

From what I understand, this story was written to bolster morale and such during WWI. That's why it's so much different than the typical Holmes tale. I must say I like...the last one or two pages. The rest I could do without.

I have to agree. I like the last scenes between Holmes and Watson but the rest was pretty dire.

I liked this story, but I'm also glad there weren't any more like this. It was good to see Holmes and Watson in a different context.

I agree. I enjoyed seeing them have a role in history.
