This is the only original story in which Holmes neither conducts an investigation nor tries to solve a problem or a crime. All he does is hear a confession.

I like the part Holmes plays here, though; he shows up as very noble and wise. And the woman's story itself is a remarkably unsentimental bit of ironic tragedy.
