Joel has announced that the next season will have six episodes. The rationale for this is to better fit the viewing habits of streaming audiences. With any luck, this also means that "seasons" will be released more frequently than once a year (I understand that this is the case for the Voltron reboot on Netflix). There has no official announcement of the films to be featured. However, Joel has stated that one of the films they'll be using will be from this decade. Don't count on it being from Asylum, though (not if the penultimate host segment of Avalanche is any indication).

Coming this Thanksgiving.

Is that the release date, Gordon? I'm unable to click into the link because it has some security issues on my work PC.

By Gordon Lawyer (Glawyer) on Monday, October 01, 2018 - 12:46 pm:

Yes it is. Too bad you can't see it yourself, as the article has some very interesting stills from the upcoming episodes.

Here's a currently unverified list of the movies allegedly being used in the next season. I'll make the text white to avoid inadvertent spoilers.

Mac and Me
Atlantic Rim
Lords of the Deep
The Day Time Ended
The Gauntlet
Ator

The second one from the top should be an absolute riot. That is a bad bad movie

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, October 18, 2018 - 5:01 am:

The first one is supposed to be really bad. The Today I Found Out YouTube channel has a story on that movie and what kind of train wreck the director was in for.

The second one is actually okay... for an Asylum film. They've done much, much worse films. (Ah, Asylum, where poor actors careers go to die.)

Not sure if I've heard of the third film or not.

The fourth sounds familiar, but darn if I can remember anything about it.

Is the fifth film the Clint Eastwood flick by any chance? That was actually a fun film. But I suspect it'll probably be a completely different film with the same title.

Could have sworn the sixth film had already been riffed, or at least a film with a main character with that name.

I was wondering the same thing about #5, KAM

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, October 18, 2018 - 10:03 am:

IMDB shows three other films with the same title 2011, 2011, and 2015 (plus a couple of TV items).

By Gordon Lawyer (Glawyer) on Thursday, October 18, 2018 - 12:48 pm:

If the fifth film is the one with Eastwood, it'll be his second appearance on MST3K.

Rifftrax has done the sixth film. You can buy it from them directly or rent it on Amazon Video. Its sequel was featured in the third season of the show's original run.

The trailer for the new season went up yesterday. Turns out that list was correct except for #5.

Oh my stars! It's that Ator! The one who flies, and so does my heaaaaart!

I believe that this is the prequel to Cave Dwellers. I always assumed that there must have been one and that they didn't just film those clips in order to have a flashback, but never thought we'd get to see it!

Now I have to decide whether to subscribe to Netflix and actually pay them some money this time, or wait for the DVD which won't be out for ages.

I'm assuming that 'The Gauntlet' is the season sub-title, and the first time that an MST season has had one. I'll re-title the thread while I'm adding in sub-topics for each movie; if it turns out that it was only used for the trailer I can always take it down again.

For those of you who didn't get to catch the recent tour, the frizzy-haired woman in the background of the shot where Kinga and Max are laughing as they have their coffee is Dr. Donna St. Phibes, Caretaker of B-Movie Monsters.

Not sure how many viewings it took me to realize that, when Max was saying, "Back to back to back to back," each shot involved the character on screen turning his or her back to us.

Not sure if it was deliberate, but there's a common theme to the movies selected for The Gauntlet. All of them are attempts to cash in on either the success of a prior film or the publicity of a concurrent film, with varying degrees of brazenness. We're all probably familiar with Mac and Me ripping off E.T. and Atlantic Rim slipping in ahead of Pacific Rim. Lords of the Deep was part of a string of science fiction and horror movies set underwater that got released in 1989. The Day Time Ended can be seen as an incoherent knock-off of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Killer Fish is yet another attempt to capture the Jaws magic. And Ator is one of many Conan the Barbarian imitators of the Eighties.

It took me days to get re-registered with Netflix but I'm finally connected. I watched Mac and Me last night and was pleased to see that they've taken out those annoying bumpers around the breaks. Hopefully this will continue for the rest of the series.

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Monday, October 07, 2019 - 3:02 am:

The DVD/Bluray comes out on 26 November.
