Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ClassicTrek: Ask The Moderator
If you have any questions or comments, you can post them here or you can e-mail me.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, July 13, 2018 - 6:12 am:

Tim, where's the Discovery board? Did we bash it too much?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, July 13, 2018 - 10:15 am:

Right here:

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Media (TV, Print, Sports, etc.): TV More or Less: Specific Show Discussions: Science Fiction & Fantasy: Star Trek Discovery

Since STD is a totally separate show, I felt that it really didn't belong in this forum. Of course, I had to Copy And Paste over all the posts (along with the names of who posted them).

And, yeah, I didn't want this thing stinking up my forum anymore, so I did take some pleasure in frog marching it out of here.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, July 14, 2018 - 12:55 am:

If you'd let me know ahead of time I could have suggested an old moderator work around with the Garbage Dump, or even tried contacting an old Roving Mod to do the moving.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, July 14, 2018 - 7:08 am:

I didn't want the thread junked, just out of my forum, as it really wasn't part of TOS. Sorry about the mix-up.

BTW: How many active Moderators are left now. Far as I know, it's me, Keith, Rodney, Emily, Callie, Natalie (alias Judi), and Butch.

Did I miss anyone?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, July 15, 2018 - 3:06 am:

Since all Mods have access to the Garbage Dump it has been used to move things from one forum to another when two mods decide to move a thread.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, October 06, 2018 - 5:16 am:

I added a Jeffrey Hunter thread to the cast section yesterday.

By Clayton Rumley (Claytonrumley) on Sunday, January 06, 2019 - 8:01 pm:

Hey everyone,

What happened to all the Star Trek: Discovery discussions? I've been away from the boards for several months and now I can't find them and I think I'm going crazy.

Sorry to bug you guys here.

Clayton

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Sunday, January 06, 2019 - 8:49 pm:

Your newmod has binned the discussions because as he likes to point out in just about every post he makes, he dislikes Discovery.

I think they are probably still around in another forum page.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, January 06, 2019 - 10:20 pm:

Right here, Clayton:

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Media (TV, Print, Sports, etc.): TV More or Less: Specific Show Discussions: Science Fiction & Fantasy: Star Trek Discovery

And yes, I hate STD, it is NOT Star Trek, no matter what the CBS Swindlers say (and I feel bad for those that were tricked into paying to see this s**t).

However, more to the point, this is the Star Trek TOS forum. STD is a separate show, and has no place here. So that is another reason I frog marched it out of here.

By Clayton Rumley (Claytonrumley) on Sunday, January 06, 2019 - 10:50 pm:

Thanks Tim, I couldn't find anything in the search results!

Totally agree with respect to STD by the way.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, January 07, 2019 - 5:27 am:

No problem.

Yeah, the search feature is pretty useless, and that was even before the current problems started.

By Clayton Rumley (Claytonrumley) on Tuesday, January 08, 2019 - 2:14 pm:

I've emailed the Chief about letting some of us programmers band together and rebuild the site. Waiting for a reply.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, January 10, 2019 - 5:38 am:

Good luck, Clayton.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Thursday, January 10, 2019 - 6:02 am:

And more to Tim's point that STD isn't Star Trek, it's because each Trek series has their own section. TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise-- they're all in separate sections in Nitcentral from the original series, which as it should be.
Doctor Who is different, since it's considered the continuation of the main character and not a show with a different concept.
I'm not sure how much people are going to be posting on STD once it starts up again, Clayton. I disliked it more and more as the first season went on, and I'm not watching it this season. Feel free to comment, since I'd like to see your opinions on it.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 5:33 am:

Doctor Who is different, since it's considered the continuation of the main character and not a show with a different concept.

Although one could argue that Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures could have their own sections here.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, February 02, 2019 - 6:32 am:

Article - And it gets worse. When it comes to Star Trek: Discovery, some people didn't like the fact that a woman of color was the lead. Or an Asian woman was Captain. Or that there was a gay couple, or or or.

Were there really people who said that, or a significant number of people (a few people would be insignificant), or is the article writer just projecting his prejudices onto people who didn't like Discovery?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, February 02, 2019 - 8:05 am:

the article writer just projecting his prejudices onto people who didn't like Discovery?

Well, I would say the latter. I hate STD, but that does not make me a racist and/or misogynist, and I resent those that would paint me as such. After all, I had no problems with an African-American captain (Ben Sisko) or a woman captain (Kathryn Janeway).

My dislike of Mikey Spock (as Doomcock calls her) has nothing to do with her gender of the colour of her skin. I dislike her because:

1. She's a Mary Sue character, someone who is always right, while everyone else as always wrong.

2. She is the human step-sister of Spock, despite that nothing is the last fifty years of canon has suggested this creature existed.

I dislike this show because the CBS Swindlers peddled it as Star Trek, when it's clearly not, rather it was just a con to get people to sign up for their All Access. Racism and/or misogyny had nothing to do with it.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Saturday, February 02, 2019 - 8:58 am:

From the article Rodney sent Tim; "Suddenly, they were seeing people who weren't like them, and they didn't like that."
Oh.
My.
God.
The writer is absolutely, positively, COMPLETELY clueless!
'Suddenly'?! Are you flippin' kidding me????
50 years-- FIFTY YEARS and counting and from day one, from scene ONE we saw people that were different from us! Spock and Uhura had the first lines in the first episode, 'The Man Trap'! Can you get much different from a white guy than a green-skinned, pointed-eared alien and a black woman???
And let's not forget that Uhura and Sulu were there from the start, and fans were perfectly fine with them!
Later we had Geordi LaForge, a black blind man-- magain, DIFFERENT from the white guys out there, Guinan, a black mysterious alien that Picard-- PICARD of all people, sought out advice from!
Then we had that warm, different relationship between a black man and his son, Ben and JJake Sisco, a woman in command of a losstarship, Janeway, and a black Vulcan, another Asian officer on the bridge -- Harry Kim, another Assian on the next show, Hoshi Sato on 'Enterprise', and lots of clearly visible aliens like Worf, Neelix, Phlox.
The show has been about nothing else but different people that are just as interesting as interesting as your average white guy, and sometimes even better in character and intelligence!
STD DID NOT break down barriers! The barriers were ALREADY down for the past FIFTY YEARS!
People don't like Burnham becomes she is written as completely UNLIKEABLE! Not because of her gender or skin color!
Geez!

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, February 03, 2019 - 5:37 am:

Sounds like whomever wrote that rubbish article is about as clueless about Trek as the CBS Swindlers are.

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Tuesday, February 05, 2019 - 6:30 am:

A new rule has been added to this forum. Please look it over.

Actually, forgive me if I'm being dim, but where are these rules?

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Tuesday, February 05, 2019 - 6:39 am:

Just go to Classic Trek, they are at the top of the page.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, February 06, 2019 - 5:12 am:

It should be the first thing you see here.

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Thursday, February 07, 2019 - 6:19 am:

Ah, thanks. I assumed it was the rules of the entire forum (which are also impossible to find!) not just for this topic.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 - 5:16 am:

I'm kicking around the idea of adding a Fred Freiberger thread in the Cast Section.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 - 9:46 am:

Isn't there a Freiberger section in the Sink?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 - 9:47 am:

Oh. It's in the Space:1999 Sink.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, February 15, 2019 - 5:10 am:

Yeah, and I think there should be one for him here too.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 - 3:05 am:

I slightly altered the title of the cast forum, is we're now talking about people other than the actors.

The cemetery sub-forum has been moved to The Classic Trek Sink.

If anyone has any suggestions for someone to be included in the thread, actor or otherwise, please post the name of the person in question here.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, April 01, 2019 - 9:59 pm:

I think you should have a board called "Trek and lesser programmes" to irk Emily off....

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, April 02, 2019 - 5:11 am:

Tempting as that sounds, I think I'll pass.

Thanks for the suggestion.

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Tuesday, April 02, 2019 - 5:28 am:

Ooh, that's the most evil idea I've seen in a long time! I love it ... grabs popcorn and settles into a comfy armchair ;-)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, April 02, 2019 - 5:36 am:

There would be no point in starting such a thread, as Emily would never see it.

With one or two exceptions, she never leaves the Doctor Who forum.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, April 02, 2019 - 2:22 pm:

She'd see the title on the last day search.....

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Wednesday, April 03, 2019 - 2:19 am:

I know, Tim. I was only teasing. Rodney's suggestion made me giggle.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, April 03, 2019 - 5:34 am:

Still, if Emily even did venture in here, I'd welcome her to my domain.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, April 03, 2019 - 7:04 am:

Remember to wear devil horns and hold a pitchfork, Tim. ;-)

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, April 12, 2019 - 6:08 am:

"...so how comes the machine controls go so far up as to kill you? It makes no sense...."

Bond probably accidently used Barry Allen's motorized traction table! :-)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, April 13, 2019 - 5:10 am:

Robert Bloch wrote that episode. Like Catspaw, he names some aliens the Old Ones, in honour of his old mentor, H.P. Lovecraft.

TOS had quite a few established horror and science fiction write for them. Robert Bloch, Jerome Bixby, Richard Matheson, and Theodore Sturgeon among them.

This is why TOS is the best of the lot, IMO.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 - 5:59 am:

You just pointed out something I never noticed until now, Tim. Unlike the original series, where Roddenberry was able to get those established sci-fi writers, TNG didn't have anyone with those credentials. Every script writer was just a script writer, not a classically-trained science fiction novelist.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 - 5:08 am:

I know. I mean it was these authors that gave up some of Trek's best known concepts (for example, it was Jerome Bixby that created the Mirror Universe).

Why none of the later True Star Trek shows (TNG to ENT) made use of any such authors, I have no idea. Did the regulations for writers chance in the 18 years between the end of TOS and the start of TNG?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 - 8:07 pm:

David Bischoff had published novels before his first NextGen script (Tin Man).

Steve - classically-trained science fiction novelist

Didn't most just learn by doing???

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, April 18, 2019 - 5:10 am:

One guy and one episode in 18 years (TNG to ENT).

Compared to the many published authors that wrote for TOS.

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 - 3:25 pm:

Not sure where to post this.

Apollo, Trelane, and Claudius Marcus nearly got themselves permanently kyboshed. Apollo and Marcus wanted Kirk & co. to give up their ship and settle down. Trelane was willing to waylay Kirk & crew and possibly destroy them (though maybe Mom and Dad would've stepped in before that point). In the meantime, a planet killer is coming this way ready to eat their planets, and while they took care of the planet killer before they met the amoeba, the amoeba would've destroyed their planets, eventually. Show some gratitude, you guys - Kirk and the Enterprise kept you alive! I'd like to see if Apollo could have fought either the planet killer or the amoeba!!!

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, July 25, 2019 - 5:02 am:

Trelane might be able to fight off those things, we know little of him.

As for Apollo, well, just take out his power source, and you've got him screwed.

Claudius Marcus, confined to one world that doesn't even have space fight technology? Yeah, of the three he would definitely be toast.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, August 31, 2019 - 5:37 am:

Just to let you all know, that the Q posts that were in the Tomorrow Is Yesterday thread have been relocated here:

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ClassicTrek: The Classic Trek Sink: Q in Classic Trek?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 - 5:22 am:

Three new threads have been added to the Characters forum. One for the Klingons, one for the Romulans, and one for Other Races.

I moved a few posts into the Klingon and Romulan ones. Hope no one minds.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 - 4:34 pm:

Doing your best Emily impression I see. Although you at least have the decency to let us know what you've done...

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, October 28, 2019 - 5:50 am:

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, January 03, 2020 - 6:02 am:

Hard to believe the Eugenics Wars was already 24 years ago!

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, January 03, 2020 - 6:31 am:

I fought in them.

That Khan was one tough hombre :-)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - 5:30 am:

Amen to that, my friend.

Thanks, Tim.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, October 31, 2020 - 5:10 am:

Happy Halloween everybody :-)

As part of my annual tradition, I'll be watching Catspaw today.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Saturday, October 31, 2020 - 1:24 pm:

And in honor of your annual tradition, I'll be watching 'Obsession'! :-)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, November 01, 2020 - 5:11 am:

Yep, I watched Catspaw, and then followed it with Wolf In The Fold.

It was Robert Bloch night.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, November 01, 2021 - 11:58 am:

You could have added 'Psycho' to that viewing, too, since Bloch wrote the screenplay.

By the way, Happy belated birthday!

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, November 02, 2021 - 5:21 am:

Thanks, Steve.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, August 12, 2022 - 6:29 am:

Hey, Tim, I'm not sure if this is your section, but in the Kitchen Sink Science fiction shows, shouldn't the thread for 'Star Trek: Untitled Upcoming Starfleet Academy series' be merged into 'Star Trek - Prodigy'? I think they're about the same show discussion.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, August 13, 2022 - 5:21 am:

You'll have to talk to KAM about that. The Kitchen Sink is his jurisdiction.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, August 13, 2022 - 2:42 pm:

Steve, if you read the article linked to in the first post of that thread it's clear that the Untitled Starfleet Academy was separate from Prodigy. The article writer mentions it possibly being a companion series to Prodigy.

Bad Robot was throwing a lot of... stuff at the walls to see what would stick around & become a series.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, August 15, 2022 - 5:08 am:

Yeah, they were really desperate, it seems.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, August 15, 2022 - 6:18 am:

I see. Never saw Prodigy, and never will. I just thought we could eliminate a thread. oh, well.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 - 5:20 am:

Okay, then.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 - 12:28 am:

Try this:

Go back to the brash reflections page and then follow this path.

Kitchen sink
Media
TV more or less
Specific shows
Science fiction and fantasy

It's pretty hard to find, I only stumbled across it by accident.

I hope it's what your looking for.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 - 5:20 am:

Uh, who is this directed to?

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 - 6:43 am:

Oh, Sorry if I was unclear.

Keith asked about where to talk about the new Star Trek shows above - I thought this might be what he was looking for.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Saturday, August 27, 2022 - 1:59 pm:

Is there anyway to identify how old a link is?

Just recently, while wandering I followed a link.

It linked to another page- it worked.

As a result I spent a couple of hours researching and nitpicking a posting about an analysis of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

The odd thing is that the link in the first post on the page still worked- after more than 14 years.

If I know a topic I can tell if I think it's worth bothering with- is there anyway avoid this sort of mistake in the future?

By M Crane (Mcrane) on Saturday, August 27, 2022 - 3:50 pm:

You mean, besides the fact that the date and time is listed after every post?

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Saturday, August 27, 2022 - 4:27 pm:

Hey, I never said that I didn't make a mistake- all I'm trying to do is prevent doing it in the future.

If I had noticed the date stamp on the post I probably would not have tried it.

I'm just looking for a way to know ahead of time what I'm getting into.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, August 27, 2022 - 6:32 pm:

Jep - Keith asked about where to talk about the new Star Trek shows above

No. I did not ask where the new shows get discussed. I moderate that section, so I know. I think you misread.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, August 28, 2022 - 5:31 am:

Jep, let me give you some free advice, stay out of the Doctor Who forum.

You and Emily go together like oil and water.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Sunday, August 28, 2022 - 6:00 am:

Seems a bit one-directional to me.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Sunday, August 28, 2022 - 10:37 am:

Tim-- That's why I asked this question here- I thought that someone might listen.

Do we get along that well?

Kevin- Which of us are you blaming??

I'm about to offer a compromise- she won't be asked to say she was wrong.

Let's see what happens.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, October 08, 2023 - 5:20 am:

In case anyone is wondering where the Jar Jar Abrams movies went, I frogmarched them here:

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Science Fiction/Fantasy

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Sunday, November 12, 2023 - 5:44 pm:

Tim, where's the 'Lines You'd Never Hear On Star Trek' thread? Seems to have disappeared.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, November 13, 2023 - 5:12 am:

Dunno.

If you wish to start a new one, go for it.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, November 13, 2023 - 3:51 pm:

Well, that's a bummer! Years of funny stuff just...missing.
