Talent Night

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ReBoot: Season One: Talent Night

Bob keeps Enzo busy while Dot prepares a surprise party for her little brother's first upgrade. She and her assistant audition a variety of acts--some comical, some downright terrifying--and when Enzo finally turns up, he gets the birthday party of his life, including a surprise final act that no one was expecting (i.e., Megabyte provides a rock 'n' roll guitar performance and is shortly accompanied by Bob).

No real nits here, except to note that some of the apparently "banned" acts (BSnP!) are still backstage practising. Did they just not have anything else to do?
Other than a major departure in character for Megabyte here (though one could surmise that he grew more ruthless over time), this is such a fun episode. And I even like the departure in character. One of my all-time favorites.

My "nit-picks" are as numerically proceeds:
1) When Bob announces, "Look at the time," at what form of a watch is looking?
2) What is that screen which Mike the TV shatters as he introduces the Binome spoof of the Village People?
3) Notice how the curtain behind which the covert sycophant Binomes to Megabyte are surveilling reads, "Irritable backdrop."
4) As Mike the TV has the covert sycophant Binomes to Megabyte leave the stage and assures them that they shall be included in the performance, take a gander at the sign above Mike the TV; exit is substituted by the word output. On a further note, the act consisted of one Megabyte minion, not the entire throng. Yet, Mike the TV does appear to be arranging for all of them to perform.
5) How come each of Megabyte's minions has practically the same voice?
6) When Enzo Matrix returns to his sister's diner and has a glimpse of the performances in store for him, you can clearly see those acrobatic Binomes. However, I thought they were rejected by Dot Matrix's assistant and prog censor.
7) The eye of that immense robot resembles the symbol for CBS. Last time I checked, though, ReBoot had always been aired on ABC, except during the third season. Furthermore, he is positioned face forward prior to when Enzo Matrix traverses the door but is then facing the door, as you can see in the background of the next scene.
8) Each time the clock apparently determining when Enzo Matrix shall go from one to ten counts down, the numbers go from the number and eleven to the number and one to the number and eleven again. Is this Mainframe's system of time-keeping?
9) After Dot Matrix's singing solo and Megabyte crashing the party, Dot Matrix is back in her common attire. Fast changer!
10) From where did those steps on the portion of Megabyte's coffin that drops down come and how did Megabyte descend them so darn quickly?
11) In a wide-screen shot of Megabyte's and Bob's guitar-playing performance, the portion that dropped down from the coffin from which Megabyte emerged no longer has steps nor illuminative green light.
12) The stances both Megabyte and Bob are in at the conclusion of their performance appear to be different in the sequential scene. Accordingly, Megabyte gives his guitar to Enzo Matrix and walks in the direction at which Bob and Dot Matrix are standing, but we do not observe him strolling off behind the two and his limousine hovers from the right of the stage to the left and beyond. How does that work?

...of a watch is looking? = ...of a watch is he looking. Typo.

This is the YTV robot, one of the companies involved in creating ReBoot. Apparently, in the Canadian version, you can see the letters YTV on it.

That's binary, or some sort of computer numbering system, if I'm not mistaken.

binary note: Enzo compiles from 01 to 10--from 1 to two. Two years old? Mainframe time is *definitely* different from User time!

5) Because they're merely extensions of Megabyte's will. He's infected them.

11) Illuminative light is redundant. ;-)

9) Ever seen the episode "Identity Crisis Part 1"? All Dot has to do to change costume is tap her icon.

THE most fun episode of the entire series. I see something new each time... like Dot choosing the red material in the first act for the dress she wears in the last act.

The game that Bob and Enzo are playing at the very start of this episode is not a User-dropped game. That huge space is somewhere in Mainframe, suppsedly.

The last Keep-Enzo-occupied activity is a waterslide park which looks exactly like the "energy park" created at the end of "Identity Crisis pt. II". The thing is, "Identity Crisis" doesn't occur until sometime AFTER "Talent Night" because Enzo is already 10 ("one-oh") in "Identity Crisis."

Check out Megabyte's fancy fingerwork in the "headstock-cam" shot!

Why use a mouthful like "covert sycophant"? in the show they refer to "viral spies".
