Bad Bob

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ReBoot: Season Two: Bad Bob

When Megabyte attacks the Principle Office in order to get the core energy, he corrupts a descending game cube. Inside the "Road Warriors" game, Bob reboots as a leather-clad driver who must race to get Megabyte--and the stolen energy--back to the Principle Office before the game ends, or Mainframe will be destroyed.

Some movie references--"Mad Max" (the title and many of the game characters; "Dr. Strangelove" (the name on the giant plane is "Hi There", which was also painted on the A-Bomb in Dr. S); the user's car looked very much like the film version of the Batmobile.

This episode really rocks! Crank ReBoot's coolness up a few notches!

Look at how many characters enter the game! Megabyte, sort of merged with his collector/transformer vessel by the game into a tanker truck, and several we've never seen in a game before: Phong, Hack, Slash, Frisket and Herr Doctor!

Herr Doctor really comes into his own as a recurring supporting character in this episode. He gets quite a few lines to deliver. He doesn't reboot into the game but the User does begin to target him.

More familiar binomes enter the game. Captain Quirk is playing Charlton Heston.
"Sir and "Binky" are back in the game again and make the best use of their scenes.

This game is corrupted. besides Megabyte's transformation, Bob's car is in the game. So is Enzo's. They're changed into wheeled vehicles by the game. Rebooting does not equip them with game-provided vehicles like it should.

The timing of some scenes is a bit sloppy again, such as when Enzo and Frisket are boxed in between the User's car and the canyon wall.

Bob doesn't use Glitch at all in this game. Did he leave Glitch in his car?

Frisket has not been seen in a game before this. He doesn't wear any visible icon and doesn't appear to have rebooted, yet he is able to participate in the game and slow down the User.
Hack and Slash Don't wear icons and don't reboot, participating only by uncoupling the collector/transformer tank from the Megabyte-rig.
Phong does reboot. His aviator's helmet sports what looks like a Guardian icon.

Several characters make repeated references to the Interocetor in Bob's car being the reason it doesn't work. The Interocetor is from the movie "This Island Earth."

Number 1 was supposed to be Will Riker, but he sounds like Sean Connery.

I just now realized... Could Number 1 sounding like Sean Connery be two jokes in one? After all, wasn't the head of SPECTER in James Bond called Number 1?

By Peter Stoller on Monday, July 08, 2002 - 11:23 pm:

Well, "Number One" is a Star Trek joke too. He's wearing a green Starfleet officer's uniform and a trimmed beard. Doing a Sean Connery voice is distinctive. I don't recall The head of SPECTRE referred to as number one.
