Trust No One

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ReBoot: Season Two: Trust No One

Something in the lower levels of Mainframe is preying on harmless binomes and sprites, draining their energy and leaving two tiny holes in their necks. Mouse is still in Mainframe, and she is suspected by the others because of her fangs, but the real villain turns out to be much more dangerous to Mainframe, and Bob discovers another world which threatens his friends and adopted home.

I cherished how they had two spoofs of Special Agent Fox Mulder and Special Agent Dana Scully from The X-Files in this episode. "Fax Modem and Data Nully of the CGI." In fact, Gillian Anderson volunteered to do her own character spoof's voice-over. With that being said, I believe David Duchovny ought to have at least tossed around the idea of participating. The individual who performed the voice-over of Fax Modem did not sound the slightest bit like David Duchovny.

Well, apparently they did try to get Duchovny, but he either wasn't interested or was too busy. Anderson wanted to do it because she is apparently a big fan of the show.

I think that Anderson was dating (or married to!) a certain Clyde Klotz, former art director on "The X-Files," contemperary programmer for "Reboot," when she was asked to lend her voice to this episode. Duchovny declined because, to paraphrase an article I read somewhere, he didn't think that an animated guest spot would further his carrer.

My "nit-picks" are as numerically proceeds:
1) The police commissioner is not behind Cecil during Cecil’s speech as to how Cecil is not a waiter, but the police commissioner is displayed at the bar when a fellow police Binome enters and notifies the police commissioner of another abduction.
2) Why are there baseball bats outside Al’s restaurant near the garbage bins and the web creature’s domain?
3) What exactly did Fax Modem acquire from the CPU? He and Data Nully were already within the web creature’s domain after Mike the TV’s recuperation.
4) Mouse’s sword is peculiarly longer when in her hand than it is in its holster.
5) Dot Matrix is released from the web creature’s tendrils after Fax Modem and Data Nully glare their flashlights into the web creature’s face, and Dot Matrix plummets with her head facing the right direction. However, she lands in Bob’s arms facing the left direction.
6) Bob accelerates out of the web creature’s domain, and the police enter with spotlight devices. The question is this: Who contacted the police?
7) After Bob ascends the elevator shaft and consequently streaks beyond the elevator doorway, the elevator lights scintillate (def.: to flash, sparkle, and flicker). I came to believe this elevator as being inoperative.
8) When did Dot Matrix, Mouse, Fax Modem, and Data Nully dismount their hover-boards? Just as Bob is skyrocketing upward, Dot Matrix, Mouse, Fax Modem, and Data Nully are remaining idle on their hover-boards. I never observed any of them dismounting their hover-boards.

It ought to be D. Stuart, the ReBoot moderator with the E-mail address Ubiqtysync@nitcentral.com included with the link. My mind was distracted for a moment.

Umm, just between you and me, Matrix needs to smoke Turbo the Guardian.

Why? Well, in the "Episode With No Name," Turbo tells Matrix that their actions during the Web Wars were because of Daemon. Oh, really? First, Bob isn't surprised they're going to blow up Mainframe--it's the Guardian's protocol for this situation. Certainly doesn't sound like the virus is to blame for *that*. Second, I was watching--there was no sign of the viral infection on Turbo's PID during this episode.

In other words, Turbo DID ruin Enzo's life. And he should have been shot for it!

Regarding comment number three. I allways thought Fax went to get the lights he and Data use later in the episode.

By Mark Morgan on Saturday, August 07, 1999 - 9:19 am:

Revised comment: actually, in "The Episode With No Name," Turbo says that Daemon sends *the web creature*. If the Guradians weren't infected yet, then they only hold half the blame for the Web World Wars--Daemon sent the creature, and the Guardian Protocols led to the bomb going off. I'll let you all decide if half the responsibility is enough to deserve being shot (me, I'd still be mad).

On the other hand, if the Guardians were already infected by Daemon in this episode, then all feuds are off. But this seems unlikely, for the reasons above.

Now that I've flogged this particular nit into teeny tiny bits....

the Al's Diner joke returns and Al's gay waiter is introduced.

NOW the Web is treated as really scary.

The shadow on the wall when Mike is abducted as well as the scream remind me strongly of the Shadow Ships on Babylon 5.

About how the cops knew to come, Bob said that a security team was on the way.
