Game Over

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ReBoot: Season Three: Game Over

The heroes finally have the upper hand--Megabyte and Hexadecimal are contained in a Firewall, Enzo is finally accepted as Mainframe's guardian, and a way is being sought to retrieve Bob from the Web. Then, a game arrives which threatens Enzo and AndrAIa with an invincible user and a no-win scenario...

How does Enzo Matrix and AndrAIa know to place their icons into game Sprite mode so as to survive? How come no one else ever thought of doing this before? And since when could Enzo Matrix's icon be transposed to game Sprite mode?

By D. Stuart, the ReBoot moderator on Monday, June 21, 1999 - 7:00 pm:

My "nit-picks" are as numerically proceeds:
1) Phong is displayed as being between Enzo Matrix and AndrAIa during Megabyte's minions' assault on the Principal Office but soon appears elsewhere in a sequential scene.
2) Not truly a "nit-pick," but as CPU Binomes defend the Principal Office by launching projectiles at Megabyte's minions, a mailbox with the inscription E-mail on its side is clearly seen.
3) Is it my imagination or does Dot Matrix's eyeglasses appear to be set in a different position after Phong comforts her?
4) Since when can vid windows be materialized outside a Firewall-encapsulated G-Prime?
5) When Cyrus is flailing his arms and bellowing to be emancipated from within the Firewall, he identifies Scuzzy. The question is this: How does he know Scuzzy? And just out of curiosity, presuming the two do indeed know one another, when did they become acquainted?
6) How does AndrAIa know the players are being installed into the game? She has been in five games in all, including the one in this episode--with no training for nor much awareness of the games, might I add.
7) Frisket must cite ReBoot himself to receive the menagerie of items from the game, yet AndrAIa uttering ReBoot counts for both of them. Frisket even barked to activate his oversized Nullzilla-combatting mobile, aviating craft in the episode "Nullzilla."
8) Enzo Matrix loses to the user and consequently survives the user's decapitating finishing move. However, every Mainframe participant in the games have avoided injury of any kind due to the fact that the injury remains after the game (e.g., Frisket's gunshot wound in the episode "Mend & Defend" and Enzo Matrix's incapacitated eye in this particular episode). Need I say more?

By Sarah Perkins on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 - 7:41 pm:

Enzo's icon was the one used to change AndrAIa's to Reboot mode. Perhaps his icon also underwent change. And he knows that AndrAIa can change her icon--he's seen her do it, right? It's Frisket being able to change his that I don't understand.

[As to how Enzo thought of it right then, who knows....perhaps it was an inspiration from the Master Programmer.... ;)]

Moderator nits 5&6--all of thise could take place "off-screen." There's no need for us to see everything that goes on in Mainframe. Besides, Hexadecimal is one of the most infamous individuals in Mainframe. Surely Cyrus would know of her pet as well? He's been hanging around both Hex and Megabyte since "Identity Crisis."

Nit #4--isn't this the first time we've seen a firewall? If so, who's to say whether or not a vidwindow can be opened outside of it?

"Cite" is not really a good synonym for "say."

I don't understand your nit #8. Could you dumb it down a bit?

The game was a homage to Mortal Kombat, right down to Enzo's rebooted uniform.

Some of the characters were from different religions--the angel from Christianity, Andraia's from Hindu. Was the game a metaphor for the struggle between good and evil?

By Lonesome Warrior on Tuesday, August 17, 1999 - 7:57 am:

I don't know. Besides, I think Andraia's outfit was more closely meant to poke fun at Sheeva from MK3.

Mr. Konczewski, my eighth "nit-pick" is regarding the Mortal Kombat spoof's user's finishing move, which involves decapitating the defeated opponent. Although Enzo Matrix may have transposed his icon to game Sprite mode, the user ought to have still performed his finishing move. And as confirmed in previous episodes, wounds of any magnitude are retained after a game's completion. Thus, Enzo Matrix in the long run was decapitated. Yet, there are never any references to this incident or explanations as to how he may have survived. Capeesh?

By Mark Morgan on Saturday, August 28, 1999 - 5:20 pm:

The only explanation is that Enzo had multiple lives as a Game Sprite, the same way AndrAIa had multiple lives in her underwater game. Remember, when the user killed her, then she came alive again on Enzo's ship?

Only a guess. The events immediately after this episode are perhaps doomed to forever be a mystery.

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, August 30, 1999 - 11:14 am:

It would seem that only regular sprites keep their wounds, not game sprites. If not, this Mortal Kombat style game would be filled with decapitated players.

Oh, and call me Mike. My dad is Mr. Konczewski.

My "nit-picks" are as numerically proceeds:
1) Dot Matrix articulates the term today in reference to a twenty-four hour elapse in this computerized realm. Yet, I feel as if another more technical term would be suitable (e.g., half-cycle).
2) As alluded to in a later episode--"Mousetrap," to be precise--Bob is well aware of the location of Mainframe in the web. With that being said, could Bob have not simply located and returned to Mainframe after the Firewall was constructed? And I say after, since Phong announces that they may develop a means of retrieving Bob from the web during the course of this episode. Thus, one comes to believe that Mainframe is accessible at this point in the series.
3) AndrAIa and Frisket reboot into the image of the Mortal Kombat spoof's paired contenders (i.e., a four-armed female warrior and a tiger-like canine), whereas Enzo Matrix has the image of the Mortal Kombat contender reboot onto him. Why would Enzo Matrix not undergo the same process as AndrAIa and Frisket?
4) Apparently, Enzo Matrix waited until selection of the fifth and ultimate opponent prior to rebooting. Why did he wait so long to confront the user if there were three prior opportunities?
5) As the fifth and ultimate opponent is being selected, the windows of deceased contenders are highlighted. Now, I have played Mortal Kombat games and others of the sort and conflicted with numerous opponents. However, I never had to vanquish the same opponent twice. Ergo, why were the deceased players being highlighted?

A repost:

Ahhhh! Let's get our nitpicker's terminology right.

Now (all IIRC):

An error in the show is a NIT.

Someone finding that error is a {NITPICKER}.

A nitpicker NITPICKS.

A NITPICK is not an error in the show, but the action of finding it.

I'm going all Paul Cornell suddenly. If you don't get the reference, please don't ask.

Since the word nit is legitimately defined as being the egg of a louse or other parasitic insect or as being a shorter version of nitwit, Mr. Jefferson, I believe it does not qualify for being the noun version of nit-picking. In fact, refer to your dictionary and you shall discover that the noun version is nitpick. Thus, my term is correct, minus the quotation marks and hyphen of course.

Q: "How does Enzo Matrix and AndrAIa know to place their icons into game Sprite mode so as to survive? How come no one else ever thought of doing this before? And since when could Enzo Matrix's icon be transposed to game Sprite mode?"

A: Defeated game sprites aren't nullified when the User wins the game. They are recompiled whenever the same game is restarted. That's how they survive. It isn't reccommended because who knows when and where the game sprite will end up next? There's no control over it.

We never did see Enzo's and Frisket's icons being fixed to change mode like AndrAIa's, but it must have happened. Mouse's icon was modified at the same time AndrAIa's was, just not on-screen. (By the way, Mouse is never seen entering a game or using this modification.)

When the ABCs advance through the breach they cross a broad canyon of space between the firewall and the perimeter of the Principal Office. This space was previously enveloped by the firewall when it was first erected.

Hack and Slash have one of their best scenes: not deleting Cyrus. Hack & Slash and Megabyte both sound nearly ready to break up their relationship.

Anyone who lives in Mainframe ought to have heard of Scuzzy. Cyrus recognizes Scuzzy; Scuzzy doesn't neccessarily have to know who this crazy viral binome is.

Frisket doesn't say "Reboot", but double-clicking an icon inside a game ought to be sufficient to reboot sans the verbal command. (I know Cyrus fails to speak the correct word on his first attempt in "Firewall", thus failing to reboot, but I'm willing to let this technicality go for Frisket's sake.)

Enzo attempts to reboot as the first chosen opponent, "Angel", and fails. However, the first four opponents, who may be other Users or game sprites, may defeat the User before Enzo is forced to reboot as the fifth. Also, waiting until the final level of the game allows Enzo to study the User's fighting style and develop a strategy.

Glitch again disappears when Enzo reboots.

It IS inconsistent that Enzo retains the wound to his eye but not the crushing injury to his skull.
(By the way, why was this skull-crushing misinterpreted as decapitation by the (former) moderator? Listen to the sound effect.)
