I get the impression that Ray Tracer is not a sprite. The surfpod is the actual substance of the Surfer and Ray is akin to a hologram generated by the board in order to interact socially. Ray cannot exist without the board somewhere nearby. If this is true it's unclear why Ray is being locked up in a prison cell or has to dodge Matrix's close shots. It's the surfpod that should have to guard against real physical harm, not Ray.

If the surfpod gets what appears to be a huge bite taken out of it, how is it able to regenerate the missing portion?
