Mousetrap

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ReBoot: Season Three: Mousetrap

Finally reunited with Bob, the Saucy Mare and her joyful crew set course for Mainframe, only to fall foul of a series of deadly traps set by Mouse. With the Web Surfr lost and the crew facing imminent deletion, Glitch must make the ultimate sacrifice to save them all.

Mouse developed a trap that would cause a buffer wall to push all web creatures into the unstable portal leading to Mainframe. However, we have already learned that web creatures are capable of stabilizing portals by traversing into them at the conclusion of "Trust No One." Talk about defeating the purpose.

Right at the beginning of the episode, there is a scene that Cartoon Network cut. It features some hula girls, and a toast to the Web Riders. I've only seen it in quicktime (HUGE download, short scene), and it looks harmless enough. This from a network that features some pretty dark stuff on Batman...

If Mouse hacked into the web and obscured the portal leading to Mainframe, then how is it Bob, Enzo Matrix, AndrAIa, and others so easily locate and traverse what is apparently another portal leading to Mainframe?

This has been on my mind for a while, (actually about a week.) but does this whole scenario remind anyone else of Sliders?

By D. Stuart, the ReBoot moderator on Friday, July 02, 1999 - 3:40 pm:

My "nit-picks" are as numerically proceeds:
1) During the scene in which Raytracer/Web Surfr was preparing to consume the wriggling bite-size creature, he is sitting down at the table. Then in a sequential scene, he is sitting up from his chair.
2) Bob visits and counsels Enzo Matrix, and the two are returning to the lower deck. However, the Saucy Mare crew are above deck in a sequential scene. Why did Enzo Matrix and Bob bother returning to the lower deck if the crew were already on their way up?
3) The Saucy Mare identify the unstable portal as an entrance to Mainframe. The question is this: How do they know it is the entrance to Mainframe?
4) Enzo Matrix and Bob are poised beside one another as they monitor the course and situation. Enzo Matrix and AndrAIa then appear beside one another with Bob a slight distance away in a far-off sequential shot.
5) After eluding trap number one of Mouse's three-part defense, the Saucy Mare sways to its side. Since when was there gravity in the web?
6) Enzo Matrix spits on his hands prior to prying the port door open, but there is no saliva displayed.
7) Two Web Riders conspicuously leave through the port opening, as opposed to the original four, and three depart from the craft itself. Why does the amount of Web Riders rise and lower?
8) The spelling of honor is as honour, the British grammatical equivalent. ReBoot was developed and released by a Canadian company. Perhaps this is enough of an explanation.
9) If the buffer wall was eliminated, then how come Raytracer/Web Surfr had not joined the others, more so since he may stabilize a portal at any time?

D. Stuart--my anti-nits:
(1) He stood up while we were looking away.
(3) The dialogue says "that's Mainframe's address."
(5) The Saucy Mare must be affected by the energy waves of the net, similar to the waves of an ocean.
(6) It was a dramatic gesture.
(10) The buffer wall wasn't eliminated. Where did you get that idea?

By Mark Morgan on Thursday, August 26, 1999 - 7:36 am:

D. Stuart--
After seeing the episode again, I think I know why they know where mainframe's address is: Bob told them. When he figures out they're in Mouse's boobytrap, he says "It had to be Mouse! She the only other sprite that knew Mainframe's net address." "Other" as in, "I knew, and she did, and that's it."

I have to agree, though, that a trap that just pushes a web creature *into* Mainframe makes little sense. Many Web creatures would come right through (all "Class 8" creatures, anyway).

Mr. Konczewski, the buffer wall was eliminated after Bob and Glitch merged and Bob shielded the Saucy Mare with a key tool power surge that substituted for the web creature's exterior. That is, the buffer wall was only active whenever a web creature would approach Mainframe's entrance, but the web creature exterior was removed from the Saucy Mare by Bob. Thus, Raytracer/Web Surfr could have joined them. This reminds me of another inquiry. Exactly when did Raytracer/Web Surfr and the Web Riders become web creatures? They could not traverse the buffer wall despite the fact that they are obviously not web creatures. Any and all web creatures activate the buffer wall, but what of miscellaneous Sprites and search engines? No matter how you look at it, there is plot consistency present in this episode.

No matter how you look at it, there is plot consistency present in this episode. = No matter how you look at it, there is plot [inconsistency] present in this episode. Typo.

Cartoon Network will trim syndicated shows regardless of content for ad time, an old television practice.

Bob looks paler in the Web. And you can hear too easily that it's not the same voice.

Glitch speaks up and suggests a course of action!
Only Bob can understand what he says. Bob cautions him against doing this.

What happens next is pretty overdone, if you ask me. By merging with Glitch, Bob appears to change into Superman, or God, surrounded by a halo and dripping glowing gold energy as he flies through the air in some kind of Jesus Christ pose. It's the result of Len Wein's superhero comic book influence, I suppose.
