Showdown

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: ReBoot: Season Three: Showdown

The rebels launch an all-out attack on the viral Principal Office, as Megabyte prepares to escape and Hexadecimal holds Bob in her clutches. With Mainframe shutting down around them, Matrix must confront Megabyte to rescue Phong, and Bob must tango till he is sore as he attempts to deal with Hexadecimal.

I thought the Saucy Mare could only sail on the watery surface surrounding Mainframe, yet it sails high above Mainframe in the episodes "Megaframe" and "Showdown."

How was Megabyte responsible for Enzo Matrix not winning the game that cost him his right eye and, more or less, the last twelve years of his life? He blames him for all this near the conclusion of this particular episode.

Perhaps Enzo's reasoning is that because of Megabyte, he was forced to enter games he wasn't ready or trained to deal with yet. After all, if Megabyte hadn't precipitated events at the end of second season, Bob would have still been around to train Enzo, etc, etc...

Megabyte's minions are conflicting with fiduciaries of Dot Matrix's established resistance with the aide of Enzo Matrix, AndrAIa, Mouse, Raytracer/Web Surfr, Bob, and Dot Matrix herself. Then, Enzo Matrix separates from the others to confront Megabyte. He even insists that he engage Megabyte in battle single-handedly. However, it appears to me as if AndrAIa poses as a spectator all throughout the struggle. In fact, she conveniently peeks her head in as Enzo Matrix intends to protrude her trident into Megabyte but decides otherwise at the last nanosecond. Speaking of AndrAIa's trident, when and how did she acquire this item?

Enzo Matrix repeats an offensive statement regarding how Megabyte must live with the fact that he was conquered by the once little Enzo Matrix himself that Megabyte uttered to Enzo Matrix but in a reversed fashion in the episode "Firewall." Not truly a "nit-pick," but an interesting point nonetheless.

My "nit-picks" are as numerically proceeds:
1) Not truly a "nit-pick," but there is a Star Trek III: The Search for Spock reference during and after the Saucy Mare's demise. See if you can spot it, fellow NitCentral members.
2) Why does Enzo Matrix not utilize his advanced eye to observe the signal (i.e., the Saucy Mare's demise) rather than with a handheld periscope? Furthermore, Enzo Matrix's eyelid is not injured. His entire eye was sliced by the Mortal Kombat spoof's user, and his eyelid ought to have retained the scar.
3) What exactly is Mouse doing to assault the Megabyte-controlled Principal Office? All she is doing, as far as I may perceive, is running alongside Enzo Matrix with her saber raised in the air and not doing any good. Mouse could have been at least firing some type of a handgun.
4) Does AndrAIa carry multiple starfish? I have only noticed one in her hair, and the hairpin starfish was still in place after a starfish was darted into the gun turret's Binome's head.
5) The password-deriving contraption is already at four numbers for the second phase. Then, Enzo Matrix appears and consults Phong with the four numbers now at three. Megabyte consequently lashes out on Enzo Matrix, and a brief scene provides a glimpse of the contraption reaching four numbers. To make matters worse, the last two numbers were reached rather quickly, more so because less than six minutes elapsed during the struggle between Enzo Matrix and Megabyte prior to the duo ascending the staircase.
6) Hexadecimal seemingly appears wherever she so desires in the blink of an eye. However, Bob's return is not instantaneous, considering Hexadecimal de-materialized Bob much earlier than Enzo Matrix's ultimate victory. In fact, Bob was conveniently re-materialized atop the Principal Office and reunited with his fiduciaries.
7) Not truly a "nit-pick," but has anyone else noticed how graphic some of these battle scenarios are and the death scenes thereof? For example, a Binome declares, "For Megabyte!", and collides into the firewall with an entirely dramatic scene in which he says his last words during the episode "Game Over." In the episode "Showdown" two Binomes are in the cockpit of one of the ABC vehicles as it is being incinerated by the fire-blazing Saucy Mare, and you can hear those two Binomes breathing heavily and being appalled at the situation until their imminent obliteration. Is this appropriate for younger audiences? Then again, I am also referring to an animation series that decided as early as the conclusion to the second season to have all the female Sprites in skintight attire and AndrAIa later in a two-piece bathing suit.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 7:14 pm:

1) It was when either AndrAIa or the captain of the Saucy Mare said "What have I done?" and the other responds something like "What you had to do."

That is correct, Mr. Patterson! You win a silver-blue Oldsmobile Alero and one thousand dollars! You ought to receive these prizes in nine hundred and sixty working days. All kidding aside, I had forgotten to mention one other "nit-pick." During the scene in which Dot Matrix is cerebrating, "I should be out there with them...Bob, they need you. I need you," an image of Enzo Matrix and Mouse streaking forward and reacting to something not yet presented is in plain view. However, this moment does not occur until a few sequential scenes afterward. Dot Matrix must be a psychic.

D. Stuart, Regarding AndrAIa's trident. I think it was probably picked up when they arrived somewhere with a game. This and Enzo's eye/targeting device and gun are never explained. If there is ever a 4th season, the writer's ought to explain where these things came from. Perhaps in the form of stories of their life in the games told to little Enzo by Matrix & AndrAIa.

By Peter Stoller on Thursday, February 07, 2002 - 8:00 pm:

Megabyte challenges Matrix to fight it out hand to hand and boy, do they grapple! Shoving each other through walls, repeated blows to the face and body...It's like watching Popeye and Bluto. Or Bluto and Bluto.

Odd that Megabyte allowed himself to be distracted for so long when AndrAIa offers up her trident. She tells Matrix, "Catch!" He doesn't. Both he and Megabyte duck rather than catch or deflect this missle. Then it has to be pried out of the wall, all while Megabyte was poised to strike a damaging blow!

Matrix does not destroy Megabyte-- which is unexpected behavior for Matrix, but not for the show. (After all, would you get rid of such an appealing villan as Megabyte? For good?)

What's even more unusual is that Bob doesn't confront Megabyte in this episode! Season 3 belongs to Matrix, so it's his time to shine.
