Username Password Testing

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: UsernamePasswordTest: Username Password Testing

Greetings All!

Moderators, I have made you all moderators on this topic so that you can see the settings involved.

Phil
By Phil Farrand (Pfarrand) on Wednesday, November 01, 2006 - 5:10 pm:

This is a test.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Thursday, November 02, 2006 - 6:33 am:

I think this works now.

By Snick (Snick) on Thursday, November 02, 2006 - 1:31 pm:

Test-erino!

By Butch the Roving Mod (Butchmod) on Thursday, November 02, 2006 - 5:17 pm:

Testing 1, 2, 3.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, November 02, 2006 - 11:42 pm:

Is this thing on?

(Sorry, I'm so bummed about this spam stuff lately that I need a bit of humor.)

By Kyle Powderly Galactica mod (Kpowderly) on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 8:00 am:

Luigi, I sympathize. The BSG boards just started getting hit, and it's fraking uncomfortable to think of what people might see when they come here before we have a chance to clean it up...

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 8:20 am:

Spammers, and especially those who use bots, should be forced to listen to Celine Dion sing that Titanic song for three hours straight... Then they should have to watch the DS9 "Episode that we dare not name", followed by a Roger Corman film fest, and then be put to death by the Unnecessarily Slow Dipping MechanismOMT, but one that doesn't have an escape mechanism.

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 11:15 am:

I must be the only one here who didn't hate Profit and Lace.

Test

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 11:28 am:

Oh cr@p. It's back.

By the way, I asked about our problem over on Slashdot. Some of the reponses are useful.

The main suggestion was that if we wanted to keep anonymous/pseudonymous posting, to use a captcha.

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 11:47 am:

I wonder if it will keep coming after we've upgraded.

By Anonymous on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 12:34 pm:

This is a test of whether you can still post anonymously.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 03, 2006 - 12:35 pm:

Hey! That worked. Maybe things can be tweaked to require the username/password but have a "display-as" name?

By MarkN (Markn) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 2:07 am:

Testing.

By Smart Alec (Smartalec) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 2:27 am:

Testing

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 2:30 am:

How do you mean? Edit Profile does allow you to change what is displayed in front of the (Username) part of your sig.

By Benn (Benn) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 2:33 am:

Testing

By TomM, RM Moderator (Tom_M) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 8:14 am:

I'm not sure, but I think that Scott was asking if there were a feature in the next release that shows what was entered in the "full name" field without adding the username after it, allowing sock puppets and such.

By Anonymous on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 9:11 am:

ScottN, aren't you forgetting that the spammer needs to watch Barney and Friends for 4 hours nonstop too?

Oh, and why oh why is there an Anonymous posting feature in this board? Seeing how anyone can look up who really posted.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 9:52 am:

Is there any reason why Doctor Who, despite being open, hasn't been spammed lately while Stargate got hammered again? Was it just luck or has the DW board got something switched on/off that the others haven't?

By Butch the Roving Mod (Butchmod) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 11:18 am:

It 's that I've already removed a bunch of stuff from the Dr. Who board. Being a Roving Mod, I've been trying to clean up here and there, but it's very time consuming and I didn't get finished until today.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 12:10 pm:

Well, I went to discusware.com, and I know that they provide source, so it could be tweaked.

By Dummy Person (Dummy) on Saturday, November 04, 2006 - 6:49 pm:

It's really me, Butch. I'm testing something.

May The Force Be With You against the war of the spambot!!! :)

Sorry couldn't resist.

By Brian FitzGerald (Fitz1980) on Sunday, November 05, 2006 - 11:52 am:

Check check 123

By Brian FitzGerald (Fitz1980) on Sunday, November 05, 2006 - 11:53 am:

Thanks butch

By Butch the Roving Mod (Butchmod) on Sunday, November 05, 2006 - 5:52 pm:

You're welcome. Glad it worked. :)

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Sunday, November 05, 2006 - 6:38 pm:

Wow.. in 4 years, I've never known what the "A" stood for in John A. Lang...

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Sunday, November 05, 2006 - 10:08 pm:

Me neither.

By Gordon Lawyer (Glawyer) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 5:33 am:

Hey there.

By Snick (Snick) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 11:47 am:

I thought it stood for "'Ands Off Marina Sirtis!"

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 12:39 pm:

Yeah, it's like finally finding out in Second Chances(TNG) what the "T" in William T. Riker stood for.

(Oh wait, maybe I better not mention the name of the guy who eventually ended up with Troi.....)

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 1:22 pm:

I know this isn't exactly the thread to use, but given how half this site is locked up and so forth...

Anyway, my question is this

When windows offers to save a password for you so you don't have to repeatedly type it in for a given username, where is the data for this stored.

It asked me if I would like to save it and I said yes (Seeing how it was on my laptop which only I use) but I made a mistake in my username. The password is saved for Polls Voice, not Polls_Voice.

Does anyone know where to find this data so I can either A) delete that saved password, or B) alter it somehow?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 1:43 pm:

I use FF, not IE, so I can't help you there.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 3:42 pm:

I don't think this is a IE thing, I think this is a windows thing I think. Because in IE, if you deleted your history, cookies, temp files etc. it generally clears out all that junk.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, November 06, 2006 - 6:54 pm:

No, because in FF, the choice to clear the passwords/user data is clearly available in the options menu.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Tuesday, November 07, 2006 - 12:27 pm:

Well I've sold my soul to Bill Gates, so sue me.

By Mrcrusher (Mrcrusher) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 12:10 pm:

Its about time they started requiring user names and passwords! Good work Phil on FINALLY stepping in and doing something about the spam problems!

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 12:18 pm:

Actually, I think individual moderators stepped in and did something about the spam problems. By either closing or changing the boards to private.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 1:29 pm:

For some reason, I am not allowed to post on PM. It gives me an authentication error.

By Mrcrusher (Mrcrusher) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 2:51 pm:

Torque, you are probably right about it being the moderators, Phil never seems to what to do anything it.

By Aaron Dotter (Dotter31) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 5:19 pm:

I also get authentication errors on PM.

Mrcrusher, look at the first post on this page. It was made by Phil, who was testing the password system. How is that not wanting to do anything about it? I believe he and the moderators all agreed to do it.

By TomM, RM Moderator (Tom_M) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 5:40 pm:

Luigi -- Are your generalized, wildcarded anti-spammer IP blockers catching Scott and Aaron? Or is it a different problem that we need to track down?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 6:23 pm:

Data point. It happens to me from multiple locations.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 6:40 pm:

Oh, I know Phil does what he needs to be doing, I was just pointing out that the solution to the spam bot problem really didn't need Phil's direct intervention as the solution of making things private access is part of the responsibilities of the moderators.

By Butch the Roving Mod (Butchmod) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 7:02 pm:

ScottN and Aaron, I thought perhaps you weren't on the user list for PM, but I checked and you both are. Not much help, I know.

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 7:52 pm:

Luigi, I was trying to post about the mid term elections and it gave me an authentication error? Did I suddenly turn to the darkside for this to happen? I thought I'd been a good little Jedi. :( :(

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 8:25 pm:

Sigh. I'm not sure what happened. The IP restriction setting wasn't even on. I had it set to "Moderators in all groups". Isn't that the right one? I just changed it to "Moderators in this group (Political_nitpickers)". Hopefully that'll do the trick? Let me know. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, guys.

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 8:41 pm:

Luigi, I don't know if you've cleared me to post when you set the board to private posting only. Perhapes that's my problem?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 9:00 pm:

I'm not sure how to clear someone to post, but try it now.

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 9:12 pm:

Sorry, Luigi it still doesn't seem to be working. I've even tried logging completely off my browser and coming back online and still no dice. Perhaps Butch or one of the other mods has a suggestion?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 11:19 pm:

Still can't post.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 - 11:29 pm:

IIRC you have to select "Users In all groups", as well as Moderators, Luigi.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, November 09, 2006 - 5:28 pm:

Okay, try it now, guys.

By Aaron Dotter (Dotter31) on Thursday, November 09, 2006 - 5:44 pm:

Whatever you did worked for me, Luigi.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, November 09, 2006 - 8:31 pm:

Yep. Me too.

By MarkN (Markn) on Thursday, November 09, 2006 - 8:32 pm:

Going way off-topic here but since Movies is currently closed I just wanted to show y'all the new way freakin' cool Spider-Man 3 trailer which debuts tonight at 7PM, EST, in between CSI and Shark but you can watch it online now. Shows a lot more of Sandman.

Radio Free Movie

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Saturday, November 11, 2006 - 1:56 pm:

Better explanation on Sandman, not enough on Venom...

Btw, an average of 15 posts per day... sheesh...

By Benn (Benn) on Sunday, November 12, 2006 - 10:44 am:

Got just one question. Maybe it's been asked and answered already, but, um, what exactly are we waiting on to reopen Nitcent? Is there any idea how much longer we'll have to wait? (I plan on getting the 11th and final season of M*A*S*H today, and once I start watching it I'm going to be ready to start nitpicking it, so I'm kinda anxious to know when the boards are gonna reopen, you feel me?)

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Sunday, November 12, 2006 - 11:38 am:

The longer things are closed, the less likely activity will come back...

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Sunday, November 12, 2006 - 4:59 pm:

I believe we're waiting for the Chief to upgrade the boards. Once that happens, I think we'll be reopening them.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Sunday, November 12, 2006 - 8:27 pm:

so are we looking at a time frame beyond election 08 or something much sooner?

No rush on the Chief, more of a if its gonna be a while, why not open the boards in the mean time.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 6:17 am:

The danger of re-opening the full board is, I reckon, that the Authentication Errors will start cropping up again, and not all the moderators and Roving Mods are around enough of the time to keep clearing out the mess (not to mention that it's a really boring job to do!). Keeping most topics closed keeps the board tidy, even though it is a nuisance not to be able to post.

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 1:51 pm:

I have thought, scary isn't it. Why don't we email our posts to the moderators of the boards and then the moderators post the comments for us?

By ian livingstone (Chaos) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 2:32 pm:

Bummer isnt it? Oh well rather be tidy and neat than open.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 2:46 pm:

Anne, that would be about as tedious as removing the 'authentication error' posts and I doubt poor Mark could keep up with the Kitchen Sink.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 6:51 pm:

then why not give everyone moderator access... just kidding

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 8:11 pm:

Someone already did that with me, though not for a board that I moderate. They want me to post something on the Trek boards, but those are still closed.

By Benn (Benn) on Monday, November 13, 2006 - 10:16 pm:

Thanks for the info, guys. I think what I'm gonna do when I start watching the 11th season of M*A*S*H is to save my nits in a Word file and then post them when the boards are reopened.

By Brian D. Fouche (Titanmanforever) on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 9:05 pm:

Testing, 1-2-3-4-5-6. I wasn't sure of the ability to change the username later, and since I didn't want to be stuck, I will use "forever" rather than my age at the end of my sn.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 9:32 pm:

Since this site is closed for the most part, I'll just ask it here.

For those of you who USE internet explorer, Is there any reason to update to IE7 from IE6 other than to give Microsoft more access to my computer?

I would use firefox, but the university that I go to in their infinite wisdom chose to use Lotus notes for their email system and Novell for their networking systems and they don't like Firefox...

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 8:09 am:

Use IE for local stuff, and FF or Opera for general net surfing.

However to answer your original question, IE7 is better than IE6.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 10:26 am:

ScottN, I don't surf the net, just Nitcentral... and Fishing season hasn't started yet...

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 5:41 pm:

To the Dr. Who mod, there's a few Auth errors on your board. The content got blocked, luckily -- based on the usernames, I'm assuming it would have been porn link spam.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 8:46 pm:

I don't think it's fair that some boards are open while others remain closed. Either open them all, or close them all.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 9:36 pm:

I still have IE 5.2.3 No wonder it crashes all the time and I get notices from websites to upgrade. Is IE 7 available for free download? And for Mac? I thought I heard or read somewhere that new versions of IE is no longer being made for Mac, or something. Anyone know?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 9:42 pm:

Okay, I just checked Wiki, and it says it's no longer supported for MacOSX. One reason why the new MacOSX blows chunks.

By Hannah F., West Wing/C&J Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 10:49 pm:

Dude, DON'T USE IE.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 11:48 pm:

Luigi, WTF are you talking about... That fact that IE is not supported on MacOSX is a PLUS for that!

Go with Safari, it's the most Standard compliant browser (other than Opera) available.

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 6:17 am:

Safari is very good; I like it better than FF, frankly.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 7:19 am:

I don't like Safari. Its design is inferior, IMO. I use it for some sites, but I don't like it.

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 9:21 am:

Luigi Novi: I still have IE 5.2.3 No wonder it crashes all the time and I get notices from websites to upgrade. Is IE 7 available for free download?

I think so. Mine upgraded automatically.

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 10:03 am:

IE automatically upgraded on my computer. But it's been nothing but a hassle for me. I log on and it says it's not connected when I go to check my email. So I installed on older version of Netscape for the moment and I'm in the process of downloading FF. I've never tried it but I hate the newest Netscape version. So fingers crossed. I've never used FF before anything I need to be aware of?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 1:02 pm:

Josh, no it isn't. Luigi's on a Mac, as the discussion above indicated. Automatic upgrades of Microsoft software only work on Windows machines.

Furthermore, IE7 is only an automatic update for Windows XP (probably SP2 only on that even). I run Win2K at home, and it's not available for that.

Anne,

Don't expect FF to work identically to IE. Sites that require ActiveX won't work (this is generally a good thing... ActiveX is a huge security hole that even MS has admitted -- though not directly -- was a mistake). You will also want to look into some extensions, and maybe even some themes.

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 9:08 pm:

Or not then.

By Hannah F., West Wing/C&J Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 9:15 pm:

Anne, these are my most-used extensions:

(My Favorites, as I have tons) Extensions:

Adblock Plus: Allows you to block any banner ads, flash players, or images.
Add Bookmark Here: I file my bookmarks in different folders, so this is much nicer than clicking "Add bookmark" and then dropping down to the proper folder
BBCode Xtra: Adds BBCode/HTML/XHTML commands to the context menu (I use it to copy something from LJ to BB Code, mostly)
BugMeNot: Bypasses compulsory registration with the website (for things lik nytimes.com) from bugmenot.com
Colorful Tabs: Color-codes tabs to make them easier to distinguish (and it's pretty!)
Coolins Preview: Preview what's on a webpage (IE, I can click the button for a thread here and see what's in it)
Dictionaries (for the new spellcheck feature): American English, Russian, Spanish, German, French
DownThemAll!: Downloads all items on a page (like if I look at an FTP page)
FasterFox: Load timer (it took me 1.859s to open this new thread window) and speeds up performance
Forecast Fox: Like it says..
FoxyTunes: Control any media player (I use WinAmp)--displays artist & song, and I can go forward/back and stop/play/pause etc.
Gmail Manager: I no longer have to go to gmail.com and log in and out of my six accounts. It updates frequently and tells me when I have a new message. I just click the button and it opens the tab for the wanted account.
IE View: Open a tab, or window, in IE as some pages don't work in Firefox (VERY few, thought)
StumbleUpon: Discover new websites from your given interests, rate them, and find similar people.

Themes:
Pimpzilla
ScribbliesBrite

By Hannah F., West Wing/C&J Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 9:24 pm:

Oh...

Cooliris Preview: Hover your curson over the box that pops up when you point to a link, and a preview of the site will pop up.
Bush Countdown: Bush countdown timer. 795 days, if you're interested.
TabsMixPlus: It saves your session (so your tabs pop back open if you accidentally close your window, or crash) and you can "lock" tabs so you don't accidentally close them (I do this all the time)
VideoDownloader: Because I'm just that leech-off-of-YouTube type of girl.

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 9:37 pm:

Thanks guys. FF sounds a lot easier to navigate then IE or Netscape ever was. I'm happy because I've got some new toys to play with. :) :)

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 12:04 am:

Actually, my favorite is "FireSomething". It's from the early days of FireFox, when it was "Phoenix" and then "FireBird" before trademark issues caused the name to be changed to "FireFox".

FireSomething randomly changes the name of your browser (as shown in the titlebar). For example, this morning I was browsing using "OverHippo".

Just an amusing little thing. Nothing serious, just fun.

As for serious extensions:

Adblock Plus
Flashblock -- replaces flash with a 'push to play' button.
Tabbrowser Preferences -- Customize tab behavior
NoScript -- Control Javascript on a site-by-site basis.

By Snick (Snick) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 11:40 am:

Tabbrowser Preferences -- Customize tab behavior

Dahaha, an about:config master needs not these things!

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 12:54 pm:

Yes, I know about:about:config (:O), but Anne does not seem to be an about:config master!

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

Hey, Snick, have you ever tried FireSomething?

It's quite amusing. This post was made with Mozilla Suntarantula :)

By Anne Stockwell (Bajoran) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 3:43 pm:

Thank you Scott. No I'm not a config master and in fact I use an older computer because I don't need a supercomputer. In fact this is the first time I've used something besides Netscape or IE. So if I ask stupid questions I apologize in advance.

By Kyle Powderly Galactica mod (Kpowderly) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 8:17 pm:

And Scott, if you don't have it, I highly recommend Filterset G, which uses regular expressions to block ads and pop-ups without having to selectively add things to your black list.

I am mildly amused at all the people now experiencing problems with IE7, because I installed a beta of it four months ago at work and it's been beautiful for what limited things I need (our intranet only plays nice with IE).

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 11:21 pm:

Yeah, I've got Filterset G. Thanks.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Saturday, November 18, 2006 - 7:26 am:

Well, seeing how I'm not much of a surfer, and people appear to be having problems... I'll hold off on updating to IE7.

By Snick (Snick) on Saturday, November 18, 2006 - 12:32 pm:

CNET has just posted their Top 10 Extensions for Firefox 2, a few of which I haven't tried yet.

The Undesirable Element is back in the saddle.

TUE

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 8:15 pm:

I didn't desire that! :O

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 8:50 pm:

Welcome back, TUE! I missed you. :)

By Callie (Csullivan) on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - 2:23 am:

Welcome home, TUE.

By Benn (Benn) on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - 11:09 am:

How is it, if we're now registration only, is the spambot able to post - with usernames at that? Can those be banned? See the Movie boards for details.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - 8:26 pm:

Dr. Who and Enterprise as well.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 1:12 am:

Presumably the bot is programmed to register as well.

It was able to create fake names on boards where Anonymous posting & no-email-addresses-as-names was activated.

Registering probably isn't that much more of a complicated thing to program it to do.

I think registered names can be banned/blocked, but I haven't read up on it. Also blocking the IP addresses it uses can be done.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Polls_Voice) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 7:11 am:

If registering required you to type in a password that nitcentral emailed to your email address, I bet it would a little more difficult to program that.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 7:17 am:

But if the bot registered, how come its names are not in any of the User Groups?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 9:14 am:

Because the bots bypass normal input methods.

I don't pretend to be a CGI expert (nor do I play one on TV), but I know that bots don't use the usual mechanisms for posting. I don't know how they do it (I'm not a slimeball who writes these sort of things).

I hope the [CENSORED] [CENSORED]-tards who are pushing their [CENSORED] porn sites are happy that they've darn near destroyed one of the Web's oldest communities, especially since nobody here really gives a d@mn about what they're pushing (even if it is just googlebombing).

By Dustin Westfall (Dwestfall) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 12:04 pm:

I doubt the bot registered. It seems to be doing the same thing it has done before. It simply atempts to post it's spam using whatever username it comes up with. The bot doesn't know that it needs to register, so it posts without it. (Not to say that bots can't register, because some can. But they would show up on normal user lists like everyone else.)

The biggest problem is that Discus posts the error messages rather than simply displaying them to the user. Hopefully the upgrade will fix that bug.

As for justice mann, given my lack of mod privledges (hence, no IP check), and clearly fake email in his profile, I can't say for sure, but I have a good feeling I know who he is. I would suggest letting the mods handle it, just to avoid another prolonged battle with him.

And as you can see, there's plenty of news sites that are far more right wing than Foxnews could ever be.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, November 24, 2006 - 10:53 am:

I've read several issues of the actual NewsMax magazine. It appears to be clearly right-wing, and makes far less of a pretense of being "fair and balanced" than FOX News does.

Hey all, your resident friendly Aspie (somebody with Asperger's Syndrome) here, and I have just gotten my new password and account on this site. But what I want to know now is: WHen can I post on the "Music", "Red Dwarf", and "Monty Python & Other British Comedies" boards again?

Could somebody please look into this for me? Thanks very much.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Thursday, November 30, 2006 - 5:58 pm:

We're waiting until Phil has gotten the board moved to another hosting site and the software has been updated. Currently every time we try to open a board back up, it gets flooded by the Spambot.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, December 01, 2006 - 12:46 am:

I've been wondering, since all mods have access to this board they can theoretically move any comments from here to any other board they have access to, would it be possible to move a comment from here to a board that's locked because of the spambot?

By Callie (Csullivan) on Friday, December 01, 2006 - 2:41 am:

I would think that's definitely do-able - provided all the mods check this board out on a regular basis to see if there's anything for them. I've also suggested on my boards that if anyone wants to submit a comment, they can email it to me and I'll briefly open the board, post it, and then close the board again.

I'm curious - does this board never get hit, or are the Roving Mods cleaning it up very quickly? Cos if this board never gets touched, why is that?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, December 01, 2006 - 6:39 am:

So if I were to post my Stargate nits here you could move them? ;-)

Maybe this board is too new for the bots to know about?

On the other hand why are some boards flooded with spam, while others only get a few spam hits, not that I'm complaining about the limited spam my boards got, but it is curious. Heck, if we knew what 'standards' the spambot uses we might be able to do something about it.

By Butch the Roving Mod (Butchmod) on Friday, December 01, 2006 - 6:34 pm:

I don't think I've removed any Spam from here.
In theory, I think we can move messages from here to the other boards.
From a practical perspective, it's a slow process. It wouldn't take much to overwhelm the Roving Mods.

Should be any time now. If you look at the front Topics board, you'll see that Phil is in the process of making the changeover. So it should be within the next day or two that we'll be on a new server.

And I'm ready. I've just finished nitpicking the final season of M*A*S*H. When we reopen, it's gonna look like the M*A*S*H boards were hit by a new spambot. Me.

Of course, now that STAR TREK, the Animated Series is out on discs (and in my greedy little hands), I'm getting ready to watch and nitpick all twenty-two of those eps, too.

Oh, and thanks, Rodney!

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, December 21, 2006 - 10:18 pm:

Is it safe? Is it safe to open up all our boards? Has the spam demon been vanquished by the brave Sir Farrand?

1 Seriously, though, can I open up my boards?

2 Also, when I try using the Last Day link I have bookmarked, I get the File Locked page, which I'm guessing means that that's the old site, right?

3 But when I use the Last Day link on the left hand menu, it only displays the topics on which there are new posts. It does not display who authored the posts, or the first 30 or so characters of those posts, as it did on the old site. Is this how it's going to be? Does this mean that that feature is now permanently lost? If so, I'm really going to miss it. Seeing all the conversations in progress, even on boards I don't go to, was an integral part of visiting here.

4 This is the most perplexing part: Even though that Last Day list shows the topics on which posts have been made, it isn't accurate, because among the list is this board, and the most recent post prior to this one was Torque's above, which is from yesterday evening. The other three boards are Classic Trek, NextGen and Comic Books, but clicking on all three of those shows that not only are there no new posts, but that the Add a New Message fields are still disabled on those boards.

Any answers, Phil? Are you still working the kinks out?

Happy Holidays!

Okay...let me do some checking here and see what I can find out regarding Luigi's questions. I'll be back....

By Admin (Admin) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 12:14 pm:

Luigi!

Regarding 2.... yes I think that was the old site

Regarding 3...when I lick the Last Day link and then click the "plus" sign besides the topic name it shows who posted and the first few characters of the post, is this what you're looking for?

Regarding 4...I would imagine that the "last Day" records just need a bit of time to settle in. There's no date time stamp on the messaages shown so it's hard to tell if everything is okay but I check a couple of them and they looked okay.

More to come....

By Admin (Admin) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 12:33 pm:

Greetings All!

Okay, did some reading and this version has new features to help defeat spambots without requiring usernames and passwords. I have enabled the features so we'll see how this goes. I'd say that we are ready to open it up and see what happens!

Phil

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 5:59 pm:

Phil, I have another question: In the administrative area, there is no button for checking IP numbers on posts that I can see. Does the new site have that feature? If so, where is it? If not, how are we to check IP's?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 6:11 pm:

Also, is there a feature that allows you to see all new messages simultaneously? It's really hard to do this without that. For example, right now, when I wanted to come back to this board, I had to remember which one of the several boards it was, because there are currently three boards on which these administrative discussions are progressing: the Username Password Testing Board, Nitcentral Profiles, and the Another Server - Another Thread board. Looking for this thread meant that I had to look through all of them ("Is is this one? Nope....this one? Nope.....okay, here it is.") In this case, it didn't take long, but if things go back to normal, and the site features new messages on 30-40 boards a day, trying to sift through the boards to find a post you read earlier and want to go back to will be catastrophically hellish. Please tell me that this version of Discus has such a feature.

Also, doesn't making posts mean that your registered username will be at the top of it? Two people calling themselves Got Milk and ScottN Python, made posts today on the Science and Politics board in PM, even though the User Manager for PM does not show any users with those names. How does this work? I'm guessing the latter is ScottN, but I have no idea who Got Milk is. With neither an IP number shown in the Admin area or an account visible in the User Manager, how are moderators supposed to police stuff like this?

Lastly, could we merge these simultaneously administrative threads onto one board, perhaps in the Nitcentralia in the Sink? It would make it easier to keep track of everything being said.

Thanks Phil, and sorry for all these questions. Hope you're feeling better soon, and in time for Christmas. :-)

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 9:19 pm:

I'm ScottN Python. The PM board allowed public posting.

By Josh M (Joshm) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 9:26 pm:

Phil, I keep trying to post a link, but the site won't let me. It says I'm trying to post too many links. Is it still set at one?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, December 22, 2006 - 9:36 pm:

Yes, Scott, but "Milk"'s post seemed like it might've been actual spam, and even if it was a legitimate poster trying to be humorous, I didn't find it very funny in light of the site's recent troubles. In addition, it had nothing to do with that board's topic, or the post I made that preceded it. I deleted yours along with it for consistency. :-)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 3:14 am:

Apparently the Last Day change was done to cut down on server load time or something.

I'm not positive of this, but looking around at some of the administrative help stuff I found an old thread talking about it as a possibility.

Luigi - In the administrative area, there is no button for checking IP numbers on posts that I can see. Does the new site have that feature? If so, where is it? If not, how are we to check IP's?

No problem, Luigi.

By Admin (Admin) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 7:21 am:

Luigi!

Not to shirk my responsibilities or anything but Discus has a huge community of users and a free support area at discusware.com. Just click on the support option and you'll find a knowledge base and forums, yada, yada, yada. It will probably be faster for you to find your answers there than wait for me to dig through and find them for you (since, honestly, I wasn't that familiar with the last version of Discus that we were on ;-).

As far as the viability of the new version, the sad fact is that, under the old version, we had no protection from spambots and our only option was to move up and hope that the new version was better. There may be side effects from the move. And, it may be that if the new version doesn't include a feature that is useful, you can advise Discus of this and they will include it in an update! ;-)

As for combining threads, how's about we all just agree that I'm going to come here for questions about the new version of the board? That way we will all have only one place to look!
