The Gate Room (aka the Stargate Sink) [general topics + SG-1 topics]

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Stargate - SG-1, Atlantis, etc: The Gate Room (aka the Stargate Sink) [general topics + SG-1 topics]
While some of these topics, especially the earlier ones, are SG-1-specific, some of them can be applied equally to Atlantis (or Universe). If you want to have an Atlantis-specific conversation, try The Puddle Jumper within the Stargate: Atlantis sub-topic; for a Universe-specific topic, see Eli's Kino within the Stargate Universe topic.

What about a board about works that are similar to things in Stargate (or vice versa)?

I got to thinking about it because I recently got Negation War #1 (cover dated April 2004, so it probably came out in March) & a few hours after reading it I suddenly realized how similar the backstory of CrossGen Comics shared universe was to elements of Stargate's.

Apollyon is explaining the origin of the god-emperor Charon. Both were originally humans on Earth. Charon was a "glorified archeologist", but he had discovered Atlantis & a "means of ascension to a higher plane of existence".

We were introduced to the Atlanteans in Crux #1 (May 2001), but it turns out that the ascended Atlanteans were the mysterious entities who appeared in the first CrossGen comics (January 2000), so the whole ascended Atlanteans plot seems to have been around since at least 1999 when the scripts & artwork would have had to have been finished.

Not sure when TPTB at Stargate decided that the Ancients had ascended & once lived in Atlantis, but it seems to be an amazing coincidence.

First details of the new internet series called Sanctuary can be found here.

A dedicated website for the series is here.

Does Carter have RED hair in that picture? Alt-universe series?

By Callie on Tuesday, February 06, 2007 - 6:24 am:

Ah. It now turns out that this isn't a Stargate spinoff. It'll star several Stargate regulars and is created by Damian Kindler and written by him and Martin Wood, but I get the impression it won't actually take place in the Stargate universe or feature the same characters.

By KAM on Tuesday, April 03, 2007 - 10:51 pm:

Not really Stargate related, but I found former poster Thande.

He said he was planning to come back to NitC when seasons 9 & 10 finally started in England, but by that time had gotten involved with another forum (the hussy) http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion & that's where he spends most of his online time.

Personally, I think we should stalk him and severely chastise him for leaving us. ;-)

A review on the first webisode of Sanctuary.

By KAM on Saturday, June 02, 2007 - 3:15 am:

Hmmm, actually ended up watching the first two eps.

Interesting. Kind of Doctor Whoish (old school with serial format). The title sequence was really reminiscent of Stargate with a 'round the circle' swoop. Some tacky & grim moments though & at this point using Jack the Ripper has gone beyond cliche (fortunately that was a short sequence however). I might watch a few more when they're available.

Callie, I just wanted to let you know that my phishing filter is tagging the thread for The Serpent's Lair as being potentially dangerous.

So it does!! I have no idea why it should, and have reported it as a safe page. Thanks!

By David (Guardian) on Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 9:45 am:

We've been having an interesting discussion on the politics of Stargate on the "Absolute Power" board, but it's gotten off the topic of the episode. Could a new thread be added for "Politics in Stargate"?

By KAM on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 2:04 am:

Interesting in the way of the old Chinese curse. ;-)

By Callie on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 12:07 pm:

I think it's wiser for any political discussions to take place in Political Musings rather than on a TV show's pages. I realise that you want to talk about the politics of the show itself, but am still reluctant to create any page that is bound to stray far from simply the premise of the show, as the Absolute Power conversation already has.

There is a topic in Political Musings called "Politics on TV/on Radio/in Movies" - maybe that would be the most appropriate place to take the conversation to?

By David (Guardian) on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 9:04 pm:

Probably.

By Chris Marks (Chris_marks) on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 - 8:15 am:

Big Finish Audios are producing a series of SG-1 and Atlantis stories read by cast members (plus guest cast) - first up is Michael Shanks with "Gift Of The Gods".

More info here: http://www.bigfinish.com/news/STARGATE-SG-1-AND-STARGATE-ATLANTIS

Only saying they're coming, not that they'll be any good ;-) - as Dr Who fans will attest, BFA's output ranges from terribly profound to profoundly terrible.

By Chris Marks (Chris_marks) on Friday, May 30, 2008 - 6:57 am:

More BFA news
The first two are out - Gift Of The Gods (Michael Shanks - set in season 3) and A Necessary Evil (Torri Higginson), with another four lined up for release - Shell Game (Claudia Black and Michael Shanks), Perchance To Dream (Paul McGillon), Pathogen (Teryl Rotherly and Chris Judge) and Zero Point (David Nykl - as a friend of mine said, his version of McKay should be very interesting :-))

Gift's not too bad, a bit derivative of some Tv episodes, but Michael Shanks keeps it going for the whole story. Havn't heard the next one yet though.

Personally, I'd like a Teal'C back story one - set it very early season 1 and have him talking to the NSA or whoever saying just what he did as Apophis' first prime and why he chose to side with SG-1 in Childen Of The Gods - I've always felt his change in sides was a little too quick, and didn't have much explanation.

Actually, Callie, any chance of a BFA section in here?

By Callie (Csullivan) on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 11:51 am:

Chris, sorry it's taken so long to reply - I must have missed your question earlier.

I have amended the front page section on "Books and Novels ..." to "Books, Novels and Audio recordings ..." if you'd like to post any comments there.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Monday, October 06, 2008 - 3:07 am:

Anyone watching Sanctuary now it's come to TV? I saw the pilot and, while it held my interest, I'm not sure I'll be downloading any more episodes. For one thing, I don't think I can bear to listen to Amanda mangling the English accent each week!

It was a good Stargate hunt, though - I was constantly saying, "Ooh, it's him!" "That's him from that episode with the thing and the other thing!" and, of course, "It's Todd!!!" I especially giggled when Chris Heyerdahl chuckled and hummed in exactly the same way that Todd would have done, except in an English accent.

By Mark V Thomas (Frobisher) on Saturday, October 10, 2009 - 4:52 pm:

Callie, I know it's somewhat early, but are you going to put up a Stargate:Universe sink, in the near future...?
Yours, Frobisher, the somewhat "Living-Impaired" System Lord...

By Callie (Csullivan) on Sunday, October 11, 2009 - 8:15 am:

Done, your Frobisherness. Thanks for reminding me!

By Callie (Csullivan) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 3:36 am:

Your advice please, guys. I'm thinking of moving the Puddle Jumper and Eli's Kino into the Atlantis and Universe menus respectively, instead of having them on the top menu under this, the main Sink. Would that be a more logical thing to do, do you think?

I think that this Sink needs to stay on the top menu rather than moving inside the SG-1 menu - (a) because it's always been here (/Kosh reverb) and (b) because it's a more general topic and can cover all three (or four) series.

Any thoughts?

By Avandelay (Avandelay) on Thursday, April 01, 2010 - 3:14 am:

Sounds good, they are separate series afterall.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 6:40 am:

Robert Cooper is standing down as writer, director and executive producer after 14 years. He's not gone yet but will be slowly withdrawing during Season 2 of Universe.

I liked his work. He has written and directed some of the best ever episodes, including SGU's awesome Time.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Monday, April 18, 2011 - 5:13 am:

And It's all over. Brad Wright has just announced that the SG-1 and SGA movies have been permanently shelved, and any attempts to make an SGU movie have also been binned.

In four episodes' time, Stargate will be dead - at least for the foreseeable future.

Gods, that makes me really sad. I'm filling up with tears even as I type this.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, October 05, 2011 - 6:35 am:

Not sure where to put this. Frankly I was just stunned to learn it existed. (Some Bronies have too much time on their hooves.)

Stargate: Equestria - Stargate meets... My Little Pony.

I haven't actually read it, so I don't know if it's safe for work or not. Tread with care.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Thursday, October 06, 2011 - 5:24 am:

Oh dear lord, that is surely a sign of the forthcoming apocalypse.

Worryingly, though, it's actually not all that awful:

“Come on, Daniel, you’ve been on enough missions to know better. There’ll be a nearby group of locals who are somehow human. One of them will be ‘guarding long-forgotten knowledge’ or something like that. Probably oppressed by some thug they want us to get rid of. Hell, they’ll probably speak English too.”

*Fights the urge to move on to chapter 2 ...*

By Callie (Csullivan) on Monday, April 30, 2012 - 7:46 am:

So sad to hear of the death of Joel Goldsmith, whose music was such an essential part of all three series but particularly Atlantis and Universe.

Someone needs to marry me just so that I can get this on my finger.

Actually, forget the wedding. Just buy me the ring!

Though I do wonder whether I would be able to wear it for more than 38 minutes ...

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Saturday, April 13, 2013 - 9:39 pm:

Why does the stargate ring need to turn and lock in for an INCOMING wormhole? Until the dialing gate has finished the six digits, the receiving gate does not know it will receive a wormhole, and should be inert. In fact, the outgoing gate doesn't even start the wormhole until the PofO symbol is dialed.

The sequence should be:

1. The first five digits are dialed. Receiving gates know nothing.

2. Sixth digit is dialed. Receiving gates still know nothing, but the origin gate is now awaiting the PofO symbol.

3. Point of Origin symbol is dialed, chevron locks, power is drawn sufficient to produce a wormhole, wormhole reaches across subspace to the destination gate.

3a. Destination gate responds, and should dial, at most, a single symbol, perhaps the PofO symbol used by the origin gate, then the kawoosh happens on both ends.

4. Travelers make the crossing, then the origin gate shuts down. If the shutdown happens while there are travelers en route, then the receiving gate (if there's a DHD or the substitute understands the signal for it) supplies power to maintain the wormhole long enough.

As regards the motion picture, are we to assume that the room was shaking on every previous attempt that failed? The way the movie played it, the shaking was something new... even though all previous attempts dialed six digits and failed on the seventh.

If there was, in normal operation, a significant delay between the seventh chevron locking and the wormhole forming, that could be the interval when the shaking began.

I'm assuming that the eighth and ninth chevrons are hidden below the ramp.

I'm also assuming from the series episode 1 that Apophis and other system lords have a portable means to dial a gate, because there's no way they could have dialed out after grabbing the soldier. They'd have to find their way up to the control room, figure out how to use the dialing computer (do you need a log-on code to use the dialing computer?), then dial and get back down to the embarcation room. I assume Apophis was prepared for this and assumed even if Earth, after all this time, was accessible, the DHD might not be handy. One look around the embarcation room and they wouldn't see a DHD. A second look, and they'd see all the extra technology jury-rigged onto it. Apophis would think to himself, "I see. These Tauri have cleverly MacGuyvered their own technology to carry out certain functions of the normal dialing device."

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Sunday, April 14, 2013 - 5:00 am:

I'm also assuming from the series episode 1 that Apophis and other system lords have a portable means to dial a gate,

They do. We see Baal use one in Continuum, when he leaves the ship carrying the stargate after he killed the crew and set up his bomb.

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Sunday, April 14, 2013 - 11:31 pm:

I had another thought just now. It is possible that the gates communicate through subspace signals, similar to how they update each other's software (as in that one episode in the later seasons of SG1). So, let me try another analogy.

An older mobile telephone technology signaled out the number being dialed using frequency changes on the "idle channel". All powered-up mobile phones would locate the one channel in their area that has an idle tone on it. When a call is being made to that area, the mobile system begins signaling the dialed digits by changing the frequency in a manner similar to how a dial mechanism opens and closes the circuit rapidly. Mobile units compare the incoming number to the number of the mobile unit itself. Once a digit mismatched, the mobile unit listening would scan for and camp onto the new channel with an idle tone.

A gate's DHD could be listening to dial activity and notice when one of its coordinates is dialed, then stay tuned until there's a mismatch. Once all six are dialed, it would be on standby for an incoming wormhole, and once the PofO is dialed and accepted, the wormhole comes its way. So, in this way, a gate/DHD could be aware that someone is dialing a gate with a similar, if not identical, address.

Now, the question is, does the gate network have the equivalent of a "dial tone" on an "idle channel"?

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Monday, September 11, 2017 - 8:09 am:

Gateworld has regenerated as part of Stargate's 20th anniversary. I kind of miss the blue background but apparently this new version is more mobile-friendly.

Annoyingly, with no advance warning from the boss to me, the urls for all the transcripts have been changed. Previously the address was, e.g. ...gateworld.net/sg1/s8/transcripts/820.shtml and now it's ...gateworld.net/sg1/s8/moebius-part-2/transcript/. Yes, it makes more sense, but that's about 160 hyperlinks I ought to edit on Nitcentral alone! Just don't hold your breath ...

Also it makes my teeth itch when titles with apostrophes in them become "its-good-to-be-king" or "coup-detat"!

[Edit: thankfully Gateworld received enough complaints (not from me!) about the old links not working that they've now done re-directs if people use the old ones.]

I know we're all getting older and that many of us (me included) are not ageing well, but I looked at the second of these photos taken at a recent Stargate con and genuinely did not realise who the elderly-looking gentleman on the left was for quite a while. I was thinking, "Is that the guy who played Chronos?" It was a real shock when it finally dawned on me, and is even more of a reminder that the series started 20 years ago!

SG-1: First Prime:
First Prime is the first episode of the second Big Finish Stargate season.
Released in May 2009 and written by James Swallow.
Starring Christopher Judge as Teal'c and guest stars Doctor Who companion actor Noel Clarke as Sebe't.
Clarke is not the first Doctor Who companion actor to do Stargate as Yee Jee Tso had a minor role in the SG-1 TV episode Absolute Power in 2001.
Set during season 4.
Teal'c's past as First Prime of Apophis comes back to haunts him as Colonel O'Neill and Daniel Jackson are captured by System Lord's forces.
It is here that he faces with an old friend and fellow Jaffa, Sebe't.
Quite daunting this reunion since like the rest of the Jaffa, Sebe't viewed Teal'c as a traitor for joining the other side.
Quite daunting and enthralling tale in exploring the history between Teal'c and Sebe't with the latter ultimately becoming a tragic figure in all this.
Interesting accompanied interview with Judge as it is stated that he did this after doing the Stargate movie Continuum.
Plus it is interesting for him going back in Teal'c's timeline in performing First Prime.

Atlantis: Meltdown:
Meltdown is the finale of the second Stargate Big Finish season.

Meltdown would turned out to be the final Big Finish episode for Atlantis as the next and final season are all made up of SG-1 stories.

Meltdown would also become the final Stargate Big Finish to be in the enhanced audio readings format read by one of the two actors performing the episode in question.

For the next season the format is changed into the full-cast audio play format.

Meltdown stars David Nykl as Dr. Radek Zelenka and guest star Aiden J. David as Argan Loci.

Released in October 2009 and written by David A. McIntee.

Set during season 2 not long before Coup D'etat.

Due to an off-world mission going awry Zelenka found himself trapped in a Genii power station and does not have anyway to contact his Atlantis colleagues.

This therefore left with the only option of talking with the enemy a Genii by the name of Argan Loci.

Quite enthralling the situation that Zelenka has been forced to deal with due to his struggle to get Argan to trust him.

Quite gripping on hearing this played out leading to its resolution.

Very well done with the two actors involved in their performance, especially with what Nykl as Zelenka was given to do here more so than on TV, of this episode.

So I was very surprised on listening to the interview with David afterwards that he and Nykl had recorded this episode separately and each in different locations.

The magic of sound design.

The David interview becomes generally about him being a sci fi fan and he said that he did another sci fi for Big Finish before doing this that of Doctor Who: The Raincloud Man.

The conversion here becomes about sci fi on screen in general and says he would like to do screen sci fi.

Out of curiousity I went to look up his on-screen work but nothing sci fi was listed.

SG-1: Half-Life:
Half-Life is the opener of the third and final Stargate Big Finish season.

This sees a change in format, whereas the previous two seasons consists of two actors with one recounting the events of what just happened, this season presents in a full-cast audio play format.

Unlike the previous two seasons which was a mix of SG-1 and Atlantis episodes, this season is all SG-1 and all of which with Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson and Claudia Black as Vala.

Half-Life is written by James Swallow and released in May 2012.

Set sometime in season 10.

Daniel is held in custody for shooting Jack!
It is soon discovered that this isn't Daniel not the one known to his friends and colleagues but instead a clone.

Fascinating how this set off Vala with the clone Daniel's help to rescue the real Daniel as he held captive by their old foe Ba'al (Cliff Simon reprising him).

Enthralling adventure but this is the only the start of Ba'al's overall plan.
